Air fryers. I don't understand. I have an oven, the food is lovely. I don't have to wash it everytime I use it. I don't need to find work top or cupboard space for it.

I'm happy to be convinced otherwise but no one has been able to really explain the advantages to me so far!

Cost. Cost. Cost. Huge oven or small air fryer? Running cost.

chatelai · 27/05/2025 13:04

Bao buns, too dry. Rarely get sold with the shot of chilli sauce they need to make them edible.
Kombucha. Tastes of vinegar. Bleh.
Anything with a lot of fat in it.
Cheese and onion crisps.

Most of the rest I like: bubble tea, sourdough, coconut water, salt plus sweet combinations, chia (I like slimy/chewy/challenging textures)

I was going to 'like' avocado too, but just ate one and...nah. Suddenly too greasy, soft, bland... I only really like it as a vehicle for chilli and onion on toast.

Has "Bao buns" been done yet?

I don't think that's been mentioned. As I grew up eating dim sum most Sundays, it's not new to me. I'm pescetarian though, so don't like most of the savoury buns on offer but I love steamed custard buns!

The thing I find strange with the current bao buns ilyou see sold in shops is that the fillings are not completely enclosed in the buns, but look more like flatbread sandwhich.

I've enjoyed escargot abroad. Not sure if it's the 🐌 or the sauce. Can't see it taking off here.

We have local mussels which are enjoyable in season.

How can anyone pretend to like something they put in their mouth?

Well...erm....😂

Are you in Singapore or did you try this in Chinatown somewhere? Either way, I'm glad you liked it. Being Belgian born, I guess part of my aversion to having Biscoff in everything is that I see it as sacrilege! 😄

Speaking of Asian desserts, mochi has also become increasingly popular over the years and you can get so many different flavoured ones now, but for me it has to be classic coconut and peanut dusted with dessicated coconut.

In Singapore. I like traditional mochi if it is well made. There is a fast food type mochi out there that is an abomination.

Oh yes the bao buns that supermarkets do now for occasions like Christmas and Easter to look like a reindeer or a bunny. They’re so style-over-substance. Cupcakes and some doughnuts are like that too- so wrapped up in what they look like, the colour, the toppings, the “aesthetic”, that the actual taste is a secondary consideration. Not wanting to sound like an old fart but I guess it must be due to the advent of social media and people posting pictures of their food online.

I just remembered alfalfa. It used to be all over the place in salads, but has it now disappeared? I haven't seen it for years. I didn't mind it but it was boring, there's no getting away from that. People used to rave about it.

I'm another one who can't stand truffle in any form. I'm incredibly catholic in my food tastes in most ways, but one whiff of that evil stink and I feel my gorge rising.

I guess I'm lucky really - the things I find horrible or just don't get are: oysters, caviar, truffle and champagne, so I'm a cheap date! Give me potatoes in almost any form and a nice vegetable soup or crunchy salad and I'm happy.

TheAgileGoldPoet · 28/05/2025 10:20

Matcha and sourdough bread.

xsquared · 28/05/2025 19:19

Thought of another one, that seems to have disappeared, thank goodness!

Red velvet cake. I mean what was its appeal? What flavour is it even meant to be? It's got so much colouring in it that it tastes of nothing but sickliness.

Afternoon tea. Now I know it's been around forever, but it really took off during covid and now people have afternoon tea parties for all sorts of events, particularly hen dos and baby showers. A really good one is amazing but most of them are pretty grim, with wierd cakes. And who eats 2 scones and four cakes at one go?!

I have the gentleman's afternoon tea, lots of savouries. I don't have a sweet tooth though.

justasking111 · 28/05/2025 20:25

@Arran2024 look out for places that do savoury afternoon teas. Example below.

Aperol Spritz is really old news, it has been around for at least 15 years and is vile.
Was never keen on sweet potatoes, which don't fry well as they do not contain enough starch (yes, people, that is why they are praised as low carb).
Matcha tea bis also as old as the hills.
Worryingly, Bubble Tea and Dubai chocolate are available in Germany, which is usually 10 to 15 years behind the rest of the world. Wouldn't touch either with a bargepole.
I do like truffles (the natural fungus sort).

Why are you so concerned about when things were created? Yes matcha has been around a long time. About 1500 years. Aperol spritz is a lot older than 15 years so if you only heard about it 15 years ago you are really quite a late adopter.

DH has that. It's too filling for me 😁

bridgetreilly · 29/05/2025 10:25

Cakes that don’t look like cakes. Cake is a really appetising thing in its own right. It doesn’t need to be a fake something else. Just eat cake!

Also, cakes that are half a dozen layers high. Impossible to slice and eat. Two layers for a cake, three for a gateau max.

Also cakes that look like they are wearing frilly knickers. Just cool it with the retro icing.

I was so excited to try Aperol Spritz (I don’t like alcohol but do like a cheeky WKD or Smirnoff ice!). I was so disappointed- It’s bitter!

Dubai chocolate is lovely. My sister gave me some and I was impressed. It was the one with the green inside

Aperol is nearly 100 years old - originally Italian, Venice.

I spent a long time up the mountains in Italy, Switzerland and France, loved having the bitter aperitifs...

Crikeyalmighty · 29/05/2025 11:02

@Lonelydave me too, I only drink good wine or bitter aperitifs or a good G&T , mind you I don’t really have a sweet tooth- hence I don’t like many cocktails
