Mines matcha - looks nasty

Previously sweet potato fries but they've kinda died out now

Some people here remind me of my dad. Very much I know what I like and I like what I know. Anything he didn't like he thought was objectively rubbish and he thought people were just liking to fit in. This included:

  • Any wine or alcohol that was not sweet (so beer, spirits, dry wine)
  • garlic
  • pasta
  • spices

Maybe things are popular because they are actually nice and people like them.

CiaoMeow · 26/05/2025 11:02

Olives - love
Not sure what Aperol is. Will Google.
Avocados - no
Sourdough - love
Cottage cheese - quite like

Never tried overnight oats. I'm imagining it must be spectacular though as so many people talk about with almost religious fervour.

Lots of posters are just listing things that they don't like. Interesting interpretation of the word "trend" in the title.

Cupcakes, oysters, truffles, avocados and tapas (to name but a few) aren't exactly trends and nobody needs to "pretend" to like them. They're just.......food.

They are just food- but they are also trends where these foods become ‘in thing’ to eat.

5 years ago I’d walk past the oyster place in Borough market and it would be quiet. They always had customers but you’d never have to wait to get served.

Now, they have a long, winding queue every weekend.

it works the other way. You couldn’t move for Black Forest gateaux in the 70’s /80’s, but for years people shunned it because it was old fashioned.

They all taste the same. But they have spikes and troughs in popularity.

someone mentioned lemongrass shots- I think they died out because they are disgusting. But people obviously felt compelled to take them at one point.

I could see the point if people were talking about carrots.

It's nothing new. Back in the 70s when we got married, wedding present cookery books were Robert Carrier, the galloping gourmet. Forget Fanny Craddock. There was butter, cream, wine,in the recipes . Twas tasty as an occasional treat. The recipes were very rich. We had dinner parties back then, no deliveroo. Starter, mai, pudding, cheeseboard, coffee, mints. Wine, spirits, liqueurs.

I recall one friends roulades were amazing, ditto her Pavlova's.

But the rest of the time we all ate simply and healthily.

I agree, except for if it is shredded, stalks removed and gently turned in butter until it wilts, add loads of black pepper and a swill of cream. Then its heaven.

I think most things can be rendered edible, or even tasty, if gently turned in butter then subjected to loads of black pepper and cream...

You are really not pleading kales case here!

Aperol is banned in Belarus. They get it.

Aperol got the courts to ban dodgy imports into Belarus made without permission after it withdrew from the market in response to Russia invading Ukraine.

Personally, I like the taste of alcoholic Irn Brew with added oranges (as well as girders).

soupyspoon · 26/05/2025 16:20

I find turmeric (which I pronounce as tumour rick) tastes of TCP, as does saffron.

suki1964 · 26/05/2025 20:08

Kale - was food for cows when I was a child, do not understand the appeal at all

matcha and bubble drinks? Like wtf

Breakfast muffins? Tray baked omelettes and seriously who wants to eat cold flabby omelette ?

Somebody or others lunch trays? Its a bloody Tupperware of healthy unprocessed foods, been doing it for decades and now its been given a trendy name and there's a tic tock following

You could shred a beer mat and saute it in butter and douse in cream and black pepper and it would be nicer than kale treated the same way.

Yes exactly, avocado on toast was suddenly everywhere being eaten by people who didn’t enjoy it but wanted to be on trend.

How do you know this? Did they say they didn't like it but kept ordering it? I've never seen or heard of people doing this.

xsquared · 26/05/2025 10:09

I disagree. I think Biscoff on its own with a coffee is enough. They're sweet enough already. Biscoff in croissant is an abomination.

I like pistachio on its own and with cardamon cake, but not in tiramisu, and there's no way I'm paying £10 for Dubai chocolate.

Pistachio has become more popular recently though. Pistachio spread in a jar never used to be a thing.

The thread title is a bit strange though.

I recently ate biscoff filling in chinese pancakes, min jiang kueh and it was freaking delicious. I only ordered the biscoff filling rather than the traditional peanut filling because a 10 year old who is on trend insisted on it! https://www.facebook.com/minjiangkueh/
So I am more ready to try future biscoff combinations despite not being a fan of the actual biscuits.

miraxxx · 27/05/2025 03:30

I don't get the kale or matcha hate! Yes they taste "green" - they are supposed to! In asian cuisine, eating a whole bunch of greens stirfried EVERYDAY is normal. I have at the moment at least 7 varieties of green tea in my pantry. The good thing about match desserts is that you cannot add too much sugar and it lends itself to very subtle flavours. Then again I grew up with red bean and yam icecream, still my favourite flavours.

cherrycherrypickin · 27/05/2025 07:10

That tea with the bits in - bubble tea?

Are you in Singapore or did you try this in Chinatown somewhere? Either way, I'm glad you liked it. Being Belgian born, I guess part of my aversion to having Biscoff in everything is that I see it as sacrilege! 😄

Speaking of Asian desserts, mochi has also become increasingly popular over the years and you can get so many different flavoured ones now, but for me it has to be classic coconut and peanut dusted with dessicated coconut.

Reetpetitenot · 27/05/2025 07:54

Matcha. Gopping. It's like drinking green mud. Tea should be refreshing, not a trial.

Matcha isn't green tea though. I have no issue with green tea. Matcha is muddy and awful.

We eat huge amounts of green veg and salad. Still think matcha is disgusting.

NamelessNancy · 27/05/2025 08:14

I'm sure a lot of the cottage cheese haters just haven't tried the good stuff. Low fat versions are vile. Longley Farm is great but for the pinnacle of cottage cheese excellence you need to try Piatnica in the Polish section. They do a high protein one too but the standard green pot one is perfection in cottage cheese form.

suki1964 · 27/05/2025 10:38

Funny enough I used to hate cottage cheese - memories of the shite sold in the 70's - but I actually love it now and eat it near on daily.

Yes people I’ve known trying to be healthy and seeing it all over Instagram so wanting to join in. Just because you haven’t seen something doesn’t mean it’s not a thing 😂 it’s what the thread is about.
People either not liking something but wanting to seem trendy or they don’t mind the taste but would prefer something else but want to be trendy.

Has "Bao buns" been done yet?

Crikeyalmighty · 27/05/2025 11:13

i don’t like Ramens - I love stir fry’s but don’t like meat and vegetables and noodles floating in liquid
truffle- I like only if used sparingly
edmame beans - yuk - same with broad beans
coconut water- texture and taste of ejaculation!

on the other hand I love aperol spritz, sour dough, brioche buns and sweet potato fry’s

Crikeyalmighty · 27/05/2025 11:14

@KakulasSister ooh yes- don’t like those either -

Oh yes, can't see the appeal at all.

Btw on tv quiz Pointless, the contestants gave the word 'bao' as an answer, and it was refused as it wasn't yet in the dictionary! It's that new!

piscofrisco · 27/05/2025 12:20
