Customers think eggs keep moving location - been in the same place for 15 years

Work p/t for a supermarket for 19 years now. Most days we get customers say ‘I wish you stop moving the eggs’. The eggs have been in the same place for 15 years. I’m not the only colleague that hears this. We do say they have been there for 15 years. A colleague got married in the two weeks that the store was closed for the refit and that was when eggs moved and stayed.

I wish customers would stop falsely accusing that the eggs keep moving.

Has other stuff moved?
So if people think that eggs are opposite to cereal, maybe it’s cereal that has moved?

Klonc · 24/05/2025 07:32

Another thing that annoys shop staff, which a FB group of retail workers mention this a lot

"Have you stopped selling (product)"
"We haven't sold it for a few years now"
"I always buy it from here and bought last week"
"You might have bought it from another store"
"No I only shop here"

Stop pulling the wool over our eyes

You still not answered the question why do customers claim that we keep moving the eggs when they have been in the same place for 13 years?

The items around eggs has not changed. Between baking items and free from (free from was expanded by condensing the breakfast cereals - which is the other side of FF). Then opposite its the honey, jam and Nutella.

My husband and I run a shop together, which we started from scratch (so it's never had any other owners). We regularly get told we used to be in a location which we weren't or that we used to sell something we've never stocked. I used to politely explain I own the shop and maybe they are thinking of a different place. Some people are really adamant though and will maintain it was under the previous (non existent owners), so now I just smile and nod.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 24/05/2025 07:41

Like the Mandela effect, but with eggs. Interesting.

Coolasfeck · 24/05/2025 07:43

Bread, butter, milk and eggs should all be next to each other on my opinion.

gamerchick · 24/05/2025 07:43

Can it top walkers who have had customers complain to them for decades that they swapped the colour packets of cheese and onion and salt and vinegar through.

That'll never die while my generation is alive I think.

Because they visit different stores?

The other stores in the area which I go to have eggs more/less in same area. Next to the baking section and opposite tinned fruit and spreads (honey, jam, peanut butter)

Would that be a Sainsbury's?

GeminiGiggles · 24/05/2025 08:38

My favourite at the moment is that we've moved the toilets.... err... they've been in the same place for 10yrs.

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 23/05/2025 17:32

Never mind the eggs, why are cereal bars never next to either the cereal or the biscuits?!

They are in Tesco opposite the cereal and next to the biscuits

TheCurious0range · 24/05/2025 08:43

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/05/2025 00:53

I've had to stop and think where Tesco has eggs at the moment.

They're at the end of the soap powder, tampax, biscuits and cleaning supplies aisle. The baking supplies are put next to the free from every third week (to ensure all the FF items get a lovely dusting of gluten) except for nuts, oils and dried fruit, which are next to the magazines, the FF shelf has cat food and cereal and the burgers, promotional cheese and ham have just evicted the vegan options so that they can keep the chilled alcohol company by the bin bags.

At least you know where you (and the eggs) are with the Co-op.

Whereas in our local Tesco they are nowhere near the tampons!
They are next to the sugar, honey, jam, peanut butter opposite bread products that are not loaves of bread (crumpets et al)

It might be a secret code for spies? “Where have you moved the eggs” might be relating to nuclear codes? You are supposed to answer, “the eagle has landed”.

AntaresAltered · 01/06/2025 03:01

@Klonc Do you remember singing the Quartermaster’s Store? Maybe at school or something like guide camp?
Asking because many people sang it, and they my subconsciously remember the line:

”There were eggs! Eggs! Running about on legs! In the store! In the store!
There were eggs! Eggs! Running around on legs, in the quartermaster’s store.

My eyes are dim, I cannot see, I have not brought my specs with me etc….

😁 This is why people think eggs move about in the store!

Floatlikeafeather2 · 01/06/2025 03:18

One supermarket I shop in (it likes to call its shops grocers rather than supermarkets) has eggs in 2 locations. Loose eggs are in front of the butcher's, deli and fish counters, whereas boxed eggs are near the baking stuff.

spoonbillstretford · 01/06/2025 03:24

In Sainsbury's they definitely move the eggs every few years. Currently they are near the bread, and they used to be at the end of an aisle, where the free from stuff is now. All the cooking oil is now next to the free from stuff at the end of an aisle. Not next to vinegar and sauces, spices and herbs, where I would expect it to be.

And for some reason half the household/cleaning stuff/foil/bags is next to the pet food right at the very end of the store.

This is why I get a home delivery. From Tesco. I'd be lost for days trying to do a weekly shop.

Mummadeze · 01/06/2025 03:33

M&S are always moving things around. It’s annoying. Saying that, I don’t think the eggs do move. Just all the things in fridges. I do think eggs are hard to find even when they don’t move. Agree they don’t have a natural place. It is my absolute big bear that supermarkets stop selling the products I buy 5 or 6 times a week. And then they do deny ever having them. Not saying you do it, but it is a thing.

I don't know first you said the eggs haven't moved for 15 years, now you're saying 13 years. I get the feeling the eggs are being moved LOL

Jokes aside, it must be terribly frustrating. On the other side of the coin, at Christmas I went to my local supermarket looking for something I hadn't brought for a long time. I looked where I thought it would be and came across a worker and asked them if it still existed. They were amazing and went out of their way to find it for me. Turns out they did stock it but were out

I have an earworm now for the Quarter Master’s Store. There should be a Mumsnet version!

NeymeChenge · 01/06/2025 04:22

Tell them it’s so the hens can’t find them and get broody again

junebirthdaygirl · 01/06/2025 04:26

Eggs are the one thing l am always looking for in supermarkets. I have a regular store and for some reason always have a mind blank about where the eggs are. I never ask but l am always searching..its weird.

GarlicMile · 01/06/2025 04:34

@AntaresAltered, your eggcelent post scrambled my brain somewhat!

GarlicMile · 01/06/2025 04:41

They should put them next to the chickens. With an over-aisle sign, readable from both sides, saying "EGGSISTENTIAL".
