My colleague gives me the rage!

We have a new member of staff who has been with us for nearly 7 months and I find she gives me the rage! 😂 The poor woman has done nothing to me but she has quirks / habits that really grate me. I have worked with horrible people in the past but i didn't feel like this!
It's like she's the human equivalent to when you can't stand loud chewing. It gives you the rage in a complete irrational way! 😂

Has anyone worked with anyone like that?!

ThinWomansBrain · 22/05/2025 22:50

Def need to know the quirks & habits in gory detail😆

Overtheatlantic · 22/05/2025 22:52

Yes. Instead of blowing her nose she just sat there, next to me, and snorted up her boogers. I could hear it. I finally brought in a box of tissues, which she didn’t use. She was just really gross.

DaisyToo · 22/05/2025 23:06
  • if you are having a conversation with someone else, she turns her head towards you to listen in,If you catch her eye, she quickly looks away. I have made it into a game now! 😂
  • when dealing with queries, she'll only do the "easy" ones as she doesn't want to / won't speak to / mither other colleagues/ departments to resolve the issue. We do them instead.
  • she doesn't talk to me ever, no small talk, how's your sick dog / holiday etc nothing but only comes to me to ask where I'm up to with work. Like wtf?! Most of my work doesn't even have anything to do with her!
  • she will send emails offering help but when it's busy she doesn't even help out.

I know how you feel.. a friend's mil, that I see a lot of makes me feel like this. I feel guilty for disliking her but I can't help it.

Judiezones · 22/05/2025 23:12

I worked with someone who was really annoying. She used to pretend yawn very loudly like she was singing, and then laugh. Another of her delightful habits was picking the skin round her nails, dropping the skin onto her desk to make a little pile, then wiping it onto the floor.
She made terrible noise when she ate, like a pig with its nose in the trough, and would talk with her mouth full so you could see the chewed up food. She was disgusting.

Obilisque · 22/05/2025 23:12

I have a colleague who seems to eat trail mix the whole time she's there. Crunching away. It starts way too early and makes me think about food when I otherwise wouldn't.

Nancywilsontheendofourlove · 22/05/2025 23:45

@Overtheatlantic that made me feel sick.
I worked with someone that did that, they were told to fucking quit it and what made it worse it was lunch time.

ByZanyRubyOrca · 22/05/2025 23:51

She might find you annoying Op😂 She’s new, give her time to settle in, especially if you are all friends. Also she might not do small talk. Some people for whatever might not want to pry and talk about their life. And some people are just awkward.

TortolaParadise · 23/05/2025 00:27

Sometimes people just don't fit and everything they do will be a problem just because of who they are. Quite sad really.

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 23/05/2025 00:33

My colleague slurps his bloody porridge stuff every day.

then leaves chunks of it in his dish and puts it coated in porridge in the dishwasher.

which he also stacks like a raccoon on meth.

Yup. I’ve seen this. Hasn’t happened to me but it does happen at places where I’ve worked. Seems very high school behaviour to laugh about the person on an anonymous public site. Very brave.

UndisclosedDesires · 23/05/2025 00:52

I have misophonia so some of these posts trigger me 😆 I have irrational rage at certain noises, so make sure to put headphones on when everyone decides to eat crisps. But the things you listed I’m not sure there’s an actual term you could use, it sounds like you don’t agree with her work ethic. You can’t click with everyone, just try and ignore it and not let it distract you. If she’s not pulling her weight then management will soon start to recognise this

I used to work with the most irritating guy, everything he did was a performance that he wanted everyone to comment on. He would announce the completion of every little task to the whole office, eg. "that's that email sent off to important customer" or "just finished my timesheet for the week".
His most ridiculous event was when he brought in a bottle of V8 Vegetable juice to drink. He must have thought it was a most impressive thing to have as he proudly displayed it on his desk in a position that most of the office could see, taking his time to adjust it so the label was turned out and in full view. It sat there for an hour or so until he was satisfied everyone had seen it ready to drink it whereupon he announced to the whole office that he was off the kitchen to get a glass for his Vegetable Juice. He returned to his desk and, while still standing, he held the glass aloft in one hand, the bottle in the other and dramatically poured it into the glass high above the desk so everyone could see. He sipped it, pinky out, while still standing, smacked his lips and declared, to nobody in particular, it was "sooooo refreshing" and "outstanding", while looking around the room to see how many people were observing his greatness.
Disappointed at having not received the instant awe and adoration of everyone around him, he spent the rest of the day asking everyone he spoke to if they had ever heard of/ever tried this incredible and delicious new health drink.

I worked at a vets for a while where the practice owner/head vet would take to the loo (placed pretty much centrally in the building, just a single cubicle you had to pass to go anywhere and could see from nearly everywhere) once morning surgery was over...

And sit there having a lengthy shit, with the newspaper, door open, pants round ankles, reading out amusing/interesting stories and generally having a loud chat with us all.

In the afternoons if there were no super interesting surgeries for him to attempt/fuck up do, he'd orbit the largeish waiting area on a wheely office chair, sometimes cuddling a friendly cat or dog if there was one available.

I wonder if the owner of the greyhound who needed a broken leg pinning ever found out quite how many holes were drilled in their dogs leg before Vet realised he was using the wrong sized drill bit, didn't have the right sized one and sent one of us over to the jewellers for one (a real jewellers who actually made stuff). The dog was kept in overnight 'for monitoring' so that the new drill bit had time to go in the autoclave and the op re-attempted (successfully) the following day.

Worked in a kitchen with a lad who snorked his snot backwards and wiped his nose with his hand/sleeve, never once saw him wash. He was a chef. I never ate there.

I used to work with a woman who was technically really nice but she just drove me insane. She was so hyper all the time. Even at 7am. And also tried to be “helpful” but just created more work for you!
”Oh I know you’re tired and you’ve just walked through the door but I’ve just booked you an extra meeting at 7.45am (in 5 minutes from now!) because I know you said you needed one at some point about the project”
”I only filed all your papers in a completely different way because you looked like you were getting overwhelmed by the mess”
”I know I’ve lost some of your expensive equipment that you specifically told me not to touch but I just needed to borrow it quickly and I swear I was going to put it back but I forgot”
”I know you told me I absolutely needed to focus on this particular job that HAD to be done immediately but I just quickly needed to do something else for someone else and I got distracted with that for 3 hours and that’s why the original incredibly important job didn’t get done!”

She also used to start conversations with you that were half way through in her own head. Either that or she wanted you to ask constant questions.
You’d be sitting at your desk and she’d crash into the room (always very loudly and fast) and say “oh my god wasn’t it hilarious what John said???” Then stare at you waiting. If you asked what John said she’d reply with “what he said yesterday!!! About the bowling! Wasn’t it funny!!!”
I'd say what about the bowling? What bowling? When was this?
”Yesterday when only me and John were in! He said the funny story about bowling!”
I’d then say that if it was just the two of them in then I obviously didn’t hear the funny story. She’d ignore that and carry on the conversation as if I knew what John had said and just kept saying how funny it was. I never did find out what happened with the bowling story.

But if you were ever in trouble or upset she would be really kind. Never gossiped about anyone. If anyone was getting complained about she would always try and see a positive about them.

Oh I don't really do small talk either and pretty much keep myself to myself. However, I don't purposely listen in on people's conversations. She doesn't want to share anything about herself which is fine. It's the blatant nosiness that gets me!

Most of those suggest she's partially d/Deaf or has hearing loss. Your 'game' could be interpreted as bullying somebody with a disability.

All the lovely colleagues who eat really smelly heated up lunch at their desk while you are working or eat crisps or bananas. I’m fine with eating sounds at a table - just not while I’m trying to concentrate. Also when I’m distracted by the irritation caused by what I consider to be terrible manners 😆.
I think eating at your desk when other appropriate places are provided is a bit gross.

I think new work colleagues can be hard. I have a similar situation where I have a crappy little job and the new hire is now pretty much running the show and being very important with paperwork and so I’m still doing the donkey work single handedly. Luckily it’s only part time in my case but I think time is required for everyone to bed in and I’m convinced that this time next year everything will have shifted again and the feelings I have won’t be there.

My advice therefore is give it time and try not to slag them off in the workplace just incase they get promoted or become the bosses favourite 😬
