My colleague gives me the rage!

We have a new member of staff who has been with us for nearly 7 months and I find she gives me the rage! 😂 The poor woman has done nothing to me but she has quirks / habits that really grate me. I have worked with horrible people in the past but i didn't feel like this!
It's like she's the human equivalent to when you can't stand loud chewing. It gives you the rage in a complete irrational way! 😂

Has anyone worked with anyone like that?!

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2025 10:00

Yes. She was a lovely person. But working with her was like nails down a blackboard. She’s talk in a real baby voice. Fortunately she went on long term sick and now works elsewhere.

purplecorkheart · 23/05/2025 10:18

I worked with a person who sang all the time. Sadly she used to sing one line of the same song off key. I came in one Monday morning and she had been randomly transferred. The manager brought us all in Muffins that day. He never bought us anything in his life.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 23/05/2025 10:21

The worst was one who kept taking calls on loudspeaker in a small, open-plan office. Mostly to her grandchildren who would babble loudly.

Second worst is constantly talking about her adult son. We have to know every gory detail of what he's up to and his opinions on everything from local restaurants to politics. I secretly call him Sheridan as per Hyacinth Bucket.

I have misophonia so some of these posts trigger me 😆 I have irrational rage at certain noises, so make sure to put headphones on when everyone decides to eat crisps. But the things you listed I’m not sure there’s an actual term you could use, it sounds like you don’t agree with her work ethic. You can’t click with everyone, just try and ignore it and not let it distract you. If she’s not pulling her weight then management will soon start to recognise this

Crisps should NEVER be eaten in the work place. I will die on this hill.

I can’t even eat pork scratchings myself. The noise of my own crunching gives me rage 🤣

UndisclosedDesires · 23/05/2025 10:34

DaisyToo · 23/05/2025 07:20

Management won't mind. Her manager is her mother 😂

So is it because of the nepotism you don’t like her? It reads as though you don’t think she is pulling her weight, can get away with it because her mother is the boss, and because of this, you’ve picked up on her behaviour and find it annoying. When you don’t really like someone you will pick up on things they do and get annoyed

Mardychum · 23/05/2025 10:37

None of the replies are anything like what op said. Op is annoyed at colleague for normal stuff. If you don’t want her ‘listening in’ have your conversations away from her. Although I don’t get what the problem is. I think you are projecting something onto her as it’s really banal normal stuff that you’re so worked up about.

Fgfgfg · 23/05/2025 10:48

itsgettingweird · 23/05/2025 07:34

I know exactly what you mean.

for me it’s those who talk the talk to management and yet get away with doing fuck all work beyond what they deem themselves important to do.

I silently rage because it doesn’t affect me but in our case slowly the whole team is getting annoyed with it and we have a change of management very imminently so now I’m intrigued to what will happen as new management are less easily swayed from what I’ve observed!

We've had a new manager and, you're right, things have changed. It's been entertaining to watch. Lazy fucker's quite bewildered by it all. He now has to work and his performance and outcomes are monitored. The rest of us haven't had this because we've always just got on with it. For us the only change has been watching him have to ask how to do certain things because he'd never bothered to learn.

BitterAndTwistedClub · 23/05/2025 11:25

I worked with someone who said before every break and lunchtime “goody, yummies for my tummy”. It was like working with a delinquent toddler. She also sprinkled her various comments with “or words to that effect”. Drove me nuts.

nomas · 23/05/2025 11:29

DaisyToo · 22/05/2025 23:06

  • if you are having a conversation with someone else, she turns her head towards you to listen in,If you catch her eye, she quickly looks away. I have made it into a game now! 😂
  • when dealing with queries, she'll only do the "easy" ones as she doesn't want to / won't speak to / mither other colleagues/ departments to resolve the issue. We do them instead.
  • she doesn't talk to me ever, no small talk, how's your sick dog / holiday etc nothing but only comes to me to ask where I'm up to with work. Like wtf?! Most of my work doesn't even have anything to do with her!
  • she will send emails offering help but when it's busy she doesn't even help out.

You said ‘The poor woman has done nothing to me’ but that’s plenty.

Sewaccidentprone · 23/05/2025 11:36

I used to work with someone who would constantly hum Christmas carols all year round.

headphones were used frequently

ItGhoul · 23/05/2025 11:46

I have a colleague, thankfully in another department, who has really done absolutely nothing wrong but really, really irks me and at the same time gives me the creeps. There is no reason for it and my loathing is completely irrational. Fortunately I don't have to have much to do with him but when his name pops up in my Teams chat, my heart sinks every time. Even his face irritates me and I am somehow convinced that he's a massive wrong'un even though there is literally zero reason for me to think that. Put it this way, if there was a story in the local paper about decapitated cats being found on people's doorsteps or knickers being stolen from women's laundry baskets, he'd be top of my list of suspects for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

thenightsky · 23/05/2025 11:46

We once got a temp to cover a colleague's maternity leave. This woman used to randomly burst in song like we were part of a musical. It was funny at first, but after 6 months became really annoying.

She also didn't believe in deodorant and cycled to work, where she'd hang her wet, sweaty cycle clothes on top of our coats. 😩

Under my glorious rule that would be a criminal offence

I used to work with the most irritating guy, everything he did was a performance that he wanted everyone to comment on. He would announce the completion of every little task to the whole office, eg. "that's that email sent off to important customer" or "just finished my timesheet for the week".
His most ridiculous event was when he brought in a bottle of V8 Vegetable juice to drink. He must have thought it was a most impressive thing to have as he proudly displayed it on his desk in a position that most of the office could see, taking his time to adjust it so the label was turned out and in full view. It sat there for an hour or so until he was satisfied everyone had seen it ready to drink it whereupon he announced to the whole office that he was off the kitchen to get a glass for his Vegetable Juice. He returned to his desk and, while still standing, he held the glass aloft in one hand, the bottle in the other and dramatically poured it into the glass high above the desk so everyone could see. He sipped it, pinky out, while still standing, smacked his lips and declared, to nobody in particular, it was "sooooo refreshing" and "outstanding", while looking around the room to see how many people were observing his greatness.
Disappointed at having not received the instant awe and adoration of everyone around him, he spent the rest of the day asking everyone he spoke to if they had ever heard of/ever tried this incredible and delicious new health drink.

You should write books, @FreddysFingers - you tell an anecdote so well!

No it’s not, it’s really ridiculous stuff. I swear some of you on here just hate people.

How is it ridiculous small stuff that a colleague only chooses easy work and leaves the hard work to others?

Everyothernamewasalreadyinuse · 23/05/2025 12:21

I used to work with a man who ate lunch at the desk everyday. Yoghurt first where he would scrape the pot for about 10 min to make sure completely empty.

Then crisps. After he was finished he would uncurl a paperclip and use that to pick crisp bits out of his teeth.
Once teeth was done he would then use the paperclip to clean dirt out from under his nails.

My DM does the scraping of the yoghurt pot/bowl thing. Goes on forever and drives me up the bloody wall!

Babyvoiced adult women - OH GOD!

They say things like “Holibobs”
“Where are you going on your holibobs?!”

We have one like this at work, she doesn't move unless she has to, and we work with the public.

Dictates everyone's lunch breaks, (we we don't put up with) and asks me "what have you been doing?".

It's annoying when managers ask this, let alone someone who has been there for less than a year.

I let it go over my head because, frankly, I have so much to deal with at home that I just don't have the head-space for it anymore.

I do feel your pain though x

Well it sounds like you’re annoyed because of the Nepotism at play - which would annoy most people to be fair.

What nepotism? Don’t think Op mentioned anything about this colleague being favoured more?

OurManyEnds · 23/05/2025 13:09

wildfellhall · 23/05/2025 07:19

All the lovely colleagues who eat really smelly heated up lunch at their desk while you are working or eat crisps or bananas. I’m fine with eating sounds at a table - just not while I’m trying to concentrate. Also when I’m distracted by the irritation caused by what I consider to be terrible manners 😆.
I think eating at your desk when other appropriate places are provided is a bit gross.

What’s wrong with eating a banana?

Jabberwok · 23/05/2025 13:10

Way too many sadly.
The guy covering mat leave who kept the same spoon in a pot of water to eat his yoghurt every day...never washed once, but the water was changed a couple of times (we knew this because he was the last in, first out irrespective of work load)
The woman who would ask you to review her presentations for external training of clients staff. Same thing, different presentation every time as she didn't want to look for additional work. "Sorry, I need to put this presentation together" . We would point out rather important factual errors and suggest changes to simplify/clarify and she would ignore and the same issue would be there the next time.
The person who just by doing their job, you know what they are paid for, acts like they are doing you a massive favour....ie sending a fax of the information that their department faxed to us all the time as we were the same company, just in a different building and which I shouldn't have had to ring to request every single time.
But the worst one who gave me the rage was the one in long term sick leave who came to the Christmas party. I was doing their job and mine (without any acknowledgement from management). I wasn't alone and HR became involved, but she applied for maternity leave so they couldn't/wouldn't progress the issue . That's when we had the guy at the start of my post come in!!!!

It made me remember…our very prim and proper Director was eating a banana when she looked around and said ‘you can never make eye contact with anyone when you’re eating a banana can you?’

We all died laughing, she was so very posh and mannered usually 🤣
