To wish Tess had just gone with Angel

This is probably a popular and well discussed opinion but it just makes me so sad every time. She didn't have to kill Alec, she was legally married to Angel. She could have just walked away.

Give us a clue. Soap? Drama? I'm a celebrity, get me out of here?

Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy…

angelinawasrobbed · 22/05/2025 00:00

Angel Clare. Supreme wanker

WallaceinAnderland · 22/05/2025 00:02

Hard agree he was a wanker.

But he did turn up eventually and she could have just walked away from her abusive relationship.

It would have saved her from the gallows.

I don't know if I'm sad you don't get it or happy for you to discover it.

That's on you

DrDameKatyDeniseInExile · 22/05/2025 00:05

But yeah, Angel is a dickhead. Should’ve killed him too.
Bleak. Though probably not as bleak as Jude the obscure.

RhannionKPSS · 22/05/2025 00:08

Totally agree!

WallaceinAnderland · 22/05/2025 00:12

Angel was a dickhead, no arguing there. But he was her legal husband and she could have just walked away from Alec. She did not have to kill Alec.

If she had just walked out of the house in the clothes that she was wearing, she could have left Alec. Surely Angel, who she still claimed to love, would have been the easy choice.

Why did she kill Alec?

PlutoCat · 22/05/2025 00:18

If Angel hadn't been such a complete hypocrite, Tess would never have felt forced to go with Alec in the first place. Angel was a bastard to Izz too.😡

This nonsense should be posted in the TV section.

Yeah. Sad.

WallaceinAnderland · 22/05/2025 00:26

I agree that Angel was a bastard. In fact, I think he was the villain of the story.

But I don't understand why Tess killed Alec when she could have walked away with Angel, who she still loved and wanted to be with.

Angel Clare was a sanctimonious, hypocritical git. Alec D'Urberville wrecked her life, which is why she ended up killing him.

And Jude is definitely bleaker.

Hardy could be a miserable git by many accounts, too.

WallaceinAnderland · 22/05/2025 00:29

How is Jude bleaker?

Tess was hanged.

Agree it's all miserable.

OP posts:
randoname · 22/05/2025 00:30

PSA please don’t let’s discuss Jude.

KettleOn919 · 22/05/2025 00:30

Angel Clare deserved to be kicked all over Wessex.

Love this for you.

it’s the most depressing book ever written. If it were on TV, the only adverts allowed would be for the Samaritans.

Ah, he could be a miserable git but some of his poetry is lovely. I love Tess though and think there is a lot of joy in there too.

WallaceinAnderland · 22/05/2025 00:32

I just don't understand why she killed Alec when she could have walked away from him. She didn't need to kill him to be free of him when she had a legal husband.

Because she thought Angel wold never really forgive her -- if she had waited longer he would have come back and she wouldn't have felt as defiled as they made it seem Alec made her.

WallaceinAnderland · 22/05/2025 00:39

But he did come back. She was faced with a choice.

She chose to kill Alec. Which led to her own death.

But she could have just left with Angel. The man that she still loved and wanted to be with.

Why didn't she just leave with Angel? Why did she feel that she had to kill Alec?
