To wish Tess had just gone with Angel

This is probably a popular and well discussed opinion but it just makes me so sad every time. She didn't have to kill Alec, she was legally married to Angel. She could have just walked away.

Huh?! It's a novel, Thomas Hardy's Tess of The D'urbevilles.

I knew immediately who you were talking about but in my youth I loved the novel Tess . " A woman more sinned against than sinning" In fact I did a whole piece of the theme of tragic womanhood in Thomas Hardy novels. It wouldn't be Hardy without the angst.
