To absolutely not want closer ties to Europe

Viviennemary · 19/05/2025 14:07

What is the matter with Stammer toadying up to the EU. We voted Out. Has he forgotten. I switched the TV off when I heard the word contribution and free movement. Here we go again. Shafted and ripped off at every turn and following their dumb rules. It's groundhog day. I'm furious.

I'm not suggesting Brexit is great.

I'm suggesting let's not throw insults around at people who have different opinions.

It won't make then want to share more of their opinions

I don't think it would stop them sharing brexit benefits if there were any.

VAT on school fees maybe?

I have no problem with people who voted leave at the time, but I am struggling with people who still think it's a good idea.

It’s so embarrassing when people exclaim
”but they didn’t do Brexit right”- it’s like, did you not listen to the financial experts at the time? This IS Brexit being done right! It was always going to be the absolute, money pit of a disaster that it is. But hey, at least people don’t have to live near foreigners 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ (oh wait, Brexit has also caused immigration to go up 🤣)

The rise in living costs is not because of brexit lmao it’s because of the war. 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

Lollylucyclark101 · 20/05/2025 19:17

It's because of many inter related issues not just brexit and not just the war but both

SapphOhNo · 20/05/2025 19:20

I don't get why some people hear about a trade agreement with our closest neighbour geographically and because it's Europe get their knickers in a twist.

lightand · 20/05/2025 19:20

I was furious too.

Though will take in all the details before anything further.

Your post doesn't give me a huge amount of faith in your understanding of the economic situation to be honest.

Despite you laughing your arse off and stuff.

I just object to being governed by EU laws and the fact they could overturn decisions made in our courts. I don't want that.

As do we all. And Brexit has achieved that.

However we DO need good trading links with Europe.

Having said that, I am appalled at the concessions Starmer has made on fishing quotas.

SparklesGlitter · 20/05/2025 19:22

Theroadt · 20/05/2025 19:01

Fishing is 0.03% of our economy! It’s a ridiculous issue to justify the economic suicide of Brexit.

True, also much of the fish we give them is the stuff we don’t like to eat. Fishing has been decimated by Brexit

WestwardHo1 · 20/05/2025 19:22

SapphOhNo · 20/05/2025 19:20

It's like a kind of warped Pavlovian reflex. They hear the word "Europe" in any context and the red mist descends.

Fogey · 20/05/2025 19:24

There’s safety in numbers. I’d rather be a part of the EU than be Trump’s little slave when it comes to defence. The UK doesn’t generate enough of anything to exist in isolation. EU law was never imposed on the uk … it was absorbed into our legal system… since leaving the EU we have lost billions in subsidies … and the economy is 2.5% less than it would’ve been had we stayed in. Cameron was an arse to give the ill informed public a vote about which nobody knew the consequences. I live in Lincolnshire and deal with food manufacturers and farmers who are genuinely struggling to reconcile and deal with the financial implications concerning the fact we left Europe… given that Lincolnshire provides a sizeable portion of homegrown food for UK I think we should listening to them and worrying about how we can get back in to a place which, whilst not perfect was a damn sight better than the economic shambles we have at the moment. Most people who voted out are dead now .. and they voted that way because of misinformation.
What was it specifically that annoyed you OP about being in Europe? Defence? Food? Labour force? Immigration? Foreign footballers?

I’m laughing because of people’s narrow minds.

Sorry specifically which rules? I am sure you must have a fair few examples to be so angry and upset about this ? Here is your moment to sway some more people. Which EU rules specifically are we talking?

Nikki7506 · 20/05/2025 19:27

Of course! because Brexit has been such a phenomenal success🙄
We are poorer, dumber and less secure because of the leave vote.
Besides, did you see how Brexit solved the immigration problem? No? Me neither.
Spend your time reading facts instead of listening to scumbags like Nigel Farage!
Brexit was a huge, dumb, idiot choice people made based on lies they heard on Facebook.
Real facts are free, you just have to find them.

Tiredalwaystired · 20/05/2025 19:28

Found this interesting You Gov poll which seems to suggest you might be in a minority when not wanting closer ties to Europe, OP

ApplesForMe · 20/05/2025 19:28

The EU is basically a lot of hardworking bureaucrats working in committees for the good of its members. Then you have the odd fraud elected like Farage, who was notorious for not attending committees, not doing the work, and then complaining about anything and everything during his time in the EU. A real disingenuous showboater of a man.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/05/2025 19:28

@keffie12 oh and don’t forget it’s cost £400 billion - we have paid an absolute fortune to make everything worse and to a large extent made us uninvestable unless it’s for a very uk centric operation with a large enough market purely within the UK - because why not go to Netherlands or Germany or Sweden or Spain etc - where you have access to the whole EU without jumping through costly hoops and red tape. We basically just handed our competitors a ton of good quality business on a plate - .

Dogsbreath7 · 20/05/2025 19:29

Hoppinggreen · 19/05/2025 14:11

Ok, thats nice for you
I think you will find a lot of people are quite happy about this - I am but I wish we could just rejoin but in the absence of that this will do for now.

So you are a smug Londoner / south east not a poor fisherman?

Viviennemary · 19/05/2025 17:22

Yes Reform will be cheering at today's news. I will vote Reform if only to keep us out of Europe's clutches. They bullied us long enough.

I think you’ve been brainwashed by the Daily Mail. We’ve never been bullied by the EU. When we were in, we had a voice at the table just like everyone else. Now we’re out, we have to rely on persuasion and negotiation. Honesty try a bit of critical thinking instead of letting Farage and the Daily Fail do it for you

Clavinova · 20/05/2025 19:31

Laurmolonlabe
Nigel Farage himself was an EU fat cat as Euro MP for over 20 years before he having the brilliant idea of backing Brexit-people also completely forget that.

To be fair, Nigel Farage won his seat in the European Parliament in 1999 for the UK Independence Party - the clue is in the name.

Tigergirl80 · 20/05/2025 19:31

I want free movement back. Brexit has been catastrophic for the economy. Admit it nothing has improved this so called money they were sending to the EU they were going to pump into the NHS hasn’t materialised. Hospitals have massive shortages of equipment and it’s partly down to we rely on imports from the EU.

You can ask as often as you like. I do not want to live under EU law.

But specifically what EU laws? Many of the current UK laws are based on EU laws, which clearly you don’t understand! Here’s a thing why not move to the US, you sound exactly the sort of migrant the orange buffoon wants! I for one are happy with closer ties and the fact it will be easier to export to the EU!

And staff as many EU workers chose to go back home!
