Have I just been thrown out of GP Practice?

Madmay25 · 13/05/2025 16:14

Long story short. Transferred ( no choice) to new GP Practice when my previous Practice closed. I had been very happy there.
The new Practice was very disappointing in several ways which led me to make several written complaints about GPs, Nurses, etc. The Practice did respond in writing to these complaints.

However, my latest complaint led to me now being advised that the Practice can arrange for me to move to a different Practice. This move would not otherwise be possible due to local GP pressures.

Is this the same as being kicked out? Should I agree to move elsewhere ? Worried it might be worse!
Do you think I am being unreasonable...complaining / expecting too much?
😕

My GP surgery has a phone message every time you ring, and part of it advises that the reception team are trained and tasked with asking the nature of your complaint and then referring you to the most appropriate HCP. They are trained what to do in most scenarios. If no appointments are available by the time you get through they will signpost you to the next most appropriate service. This is not receptionists giving out medical advice, this is them triaging you to the most appropriate care. Which is part of their job.

Edited

Yes that's not what happened at my old GP. Receptionists were basically reading out patients private medical notes (including gynaecological issues) in a public/busy reception room and then bossily telling patients how to manage their conditions. I actually heard them giving incorrect medical advice - also giving wrong advice to parents of tiny babies, which shocked me the most. And the wait to see a GP was five days, even for babies and young toddlers, who are meant to be prioritised and seen same day.

I was honestly so pleased to change practice. The Google reviews had countless stories of malpractice leading to heart attacks and even deaths in some cases.

TheIceBear · 13/05/2025 19:48

Surely this can’t be real ? Why would anyone want to continue attending a service that they “cannot stop complaining” about

Madmay25 · 13/05/2025 19:49

I don't want to go into the details of my complaints here. I believe all were valid and all were written in a non - abusive way. There was definitely no malicious intent.
It is sad that patients cannot raise issues without fear of reprisal.
I believe that health professionals in general have faced a large increase in complaints over the past few years. The complaint culture everywhere is mushrooming.
GPs are definitely not God like figures who can do no wrong. Nor are Nurses angels!
I certainly didn't bother to bang pots for them during Covid 🙄.
Won't be on here again tonight.

I was banned from my dentist last year. I had private work done not cosmetic I needed a bridge mine was hanging out and they would not do. Lots of prep work before hand so my teeth were fine. Didn’t know that if you didn’t have a check up in a year they would not see you so I said ive got tooth ache what I am a meant to do I was a bit arsey as in pain. She said ok you are banned if your daughter need to come her dad will need bring her. Bit extreme luckily I have a dentist friend she was only doing private then but nhs now so she sees me.

Hwi · 13/05/2025 19:55

Yes, effectively you have. A friend was in a similar position. She complained about the rudeness of her GP, and shortly received a letter saying that it would be in her best interest not to be served by that surgery because 'they can't guarantee she won't have to be allocated to that GP'. They don't investigate complaints, they just chuck people out.

You sound very ungrateful. Nurses and doctors are angels to me, and i’m eternally grateful and thankful for the care the nhs have given to me whether it be for antibiotics or when i had my daughter and she was in special care.

It is like everything you get great places and not so great. The staff at my old dental surgery were really rude but at my doctors they are really nice. They are very intolerant now though if you complain. They just chuck you out

olympicsrock · 13/05/2025 20:04

Such a nightmare responding to complaints in the NHS . Takes forever to complete the process .
Fair enough is the issue is major .

They can. What they cannot do is complain endlessly.

IMO the difficulty is that not all practices are like that. Mine was brilliant up to COVID but more recently the service has declined terribly. I have never thought of complaining before but beginning to realise I do need to stand up for myself when given rubbish care,
I seem to be the only one on here with sympathy for OP.

AmIHumanOrAmIAYeti · 13/05/2025 20:12

Perhaps you could train as a GP given you believe you know enough about it to make multiple complaints. People like you are the reason the good GPs are moving to the other side of the planet.

gamerchick · 13/05/2025 20:13

I think anyone has the right to complain but if you're at the point where you are complaining a lot then it's obvious it's time to go elsewhere. I wish it could improve the service but without knowing what the complaints were we just can't say if they're big or not. Or something like the bog had skid marks or the nurse didn't smile or was chatty. Gp was running over or receptionist took longer than deemed necessary to acknowledge them.

People do complain about shit like that.

GRCP · 13/05/2025 20:14

I don’t blame them for moving you on tbh - it must be exhausting and expensive to be dealing with all of that.

Don’t get me wrong i agree that sometimes things do go wrong, and i have had stuff go wrong and mistakes made by nhs staff for me such as the midwife not referring me for 12 week scan and blood samples going missing etc but for me unless it was catastrophic and the mistake led to a serious illness or death i’m happy to just accept that they are still humans under immense pressure through no fault of their own because the alternative doesn’t bear thinking about such as 3rd world countries and what if we didn’t have the nhs. I’m not saying its right we have to put up with mistakes and problems but the nhs is broken we all know that, i for one am just grateful to access care when i need it and for medication etc.

Kibble29 · 13/05/2025 20:15

Funny how you won’t give any detail on your complaints. I think you know you’ll be torn apart if you did.

Your compulsion to complain is odd, and I’d guess that the surgery can’t wait to see the back of you.

You didn't want to move to them in the first place, you're unhappy with their service and they're offering to help you find somewhere you could be happier.

I wouldn't knock it, myself.

Wow - that was a rather abrasive response. Is this the sort of style that you address your complaints in - you do not have to be abusive (and it's your opinion that they were valid, which may not be an opinion everyone shares) to be downright rude. I do not think GP's are god-like and never have, nor that nurses are angels. But there have been no "reprisals". You are clearly not happy with the way that they run their service. So they have suggested that you might be happier elsewhere. That isn't a reprisal - it's a damned good idea!

Yes there are more complaints about health professionals - and about standards of public services in general. Did the entire "there is no money in the pot to fund these things" bypass you over the last decade+? I am sure that you would like them to do some things better. I would lay bets that many GP's would like to do some things better too. And as soon as someone adequately finds health care services, I am also sure that a lot of them will.

The attitude of some patients is one of the reasons why nobody wants to go into GP practice anymore (along with the fact it is almost impossible to survive and offer a good medical service - these are private businesses) - the rise in complaints cuts both ways.

nocoolnamesleft · 13/05/2025 20:21

There are two possibilities:
1)your multitude of complaints were valid, in which case of course you do not want to be registered with this practice
2)your multitude of complaints were not valid, in which case of course the practice does not want you to be registered with them

Either of these is solved by you moving practice, which they are helping you to do.

ExpressCheckout · 13/05/2025 20:22

Well, we don't actually know what happened.

Just for balance - in my many years working in the public sector I've far too often witnessed a mob mentality against patients who are deemed to be difficult or complaining - such patients have no comeback, and often they are the most vulnerable.

I’ve had a few rubbish visits to the dentist don’t dare complain as I’m worried they won’t see me and I already drive 45 minutes to them as no local to where I live now are taking on - receptionist is so rude they know people don’t have other options I think sadly
