Why do people vote for Reform and in particular Nigel Farage?

Tories were awful. Labour spent all their energy criticising them and didn't have many ideas of their own so when they got into power ended up doing the same things they criticised the Tories for - and then tanked the economy (not as bad as Lettuce Liz but still...). Green Party are loons who hate women. Think the Libs have given up at this point.

Reform get the popular vote because people want straight talking and none of the usual political waffle, and are concerned about immigration. It's mainly in protest at the fact the other parties are awful and Reform is shiny and new.

And no I'm not a Reform voter. But I can see why a lot of people are attracted to them.

Labour have tanked the economy?

billysboy · 30/08/2025 06:27

Reform would not be in the position they are without him

LancashireButterPie · 30/08/2025 07:56

I can't stand him, I know people who voted for him and will do so again and they are all unqualified, uneducated pricks. The very type who will benefit the least from any of his policies.

Southern25 · 30/08/2025 08:03

I think we’re heading for a bankrupt country personally. House prices too high, public services never to be restored, massive welfare budget , less people working age and paying tax.

We are sinking and it’s down to the last 30 years of governments. High tax high spend, borrow , borrow , borrow..

Snickersnack1 · 13/05/2025 02:27

Because he says what people want to hear.
He frames people’s problems simplistically and sells them easy solutions. He appeals to the lowest common denominators. The desire to feel superior. To blame others. To have more. To win. It’s just words, he can’t do what he says, he only cares about power. He works from the same playbook as Trump.

All that sounds like Starmer during the last election

Bikergran · 30/08/2025 08:22

Southern25 · 29/08/2025 22:24

But Trump does what he says he says he is going to do. You say Farage is like Trump and just says what people want to hear.
But Trump says what people want to hear but follows it through.
So if Farage had a mandate and was democratically voted in , he could in theory carry out what he promises.

One could only hope that there would be stronger opposition here from the general public and the judiciary. I have family in the States and it's terrifying what's going on there.

Fortunately I am blessed with enough braincells to understand that he is a man who says a lot of things with little intelligence.

Actually he is a very intelligent man with excellent communication skills and very competent in debates. He has a distinct personality and charisma. He never loses his temper no matter how much some idiot wants to wind him up and I can tell he has a sense of humour. He doesn’t dodge questions and always has a measured answer.

If you read MN you get the impression that he is not popular, but MN does not represent the real world. MN is mainly a bunch of bored leftist housewives. Go on YouTube though, watch his speeches and it is a different story. Read the comment section below his videos and draw your own conclusion.
Here’s an example for you:

I personally don’t have the stomach to do that. I see quite enough of him through his disproportionate dominance of the mainstream news.

This is true.

The real question isnt why people like NF, It should be why are there not more politicians who are relatable and passionate, across all parties

Because there aren’t many people like him. I can only think of three politicians - Trump, Farage and Johnson. And I think they’re dangerous because people get so caught up in the “charisma” they don’t listen to what they’re actually saying. Of course there is the other side which is that they’re Marmite and people like me find them repellent.

luckylavender · 30/08/2025 12:41

ReplacementBusService · 13/05/2025 01:12

He personally is really skilled at making people think he is on their side, and is one of the rarer politicians who often appears to be saying something he believes in. We need more people in power who say something that feels real and meaningful.

Without him, Reform would just be another minor right wing bunch of nutters who nobody would have heard of. With Farage they have themselves and English Trump, ready to lead us into a bright future where men can be men, preferably if they are white or orange skinned, and women can stay home barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, and all the foreigners can go home unless they are driving an Uber or grafting down at the hospital 🫡

He is certainly a good communicator but also a vicious snake. He doesn’t give a damn about anyone except himself.

Readyforslippers · 30/08/2025 12:43

I honestly can't imagine. The people who think things are bad now have a huge shock coming if he actually gets voted for. Disgusting, immoral man, with only his interest at heart. He likes money and publicity and the British public seem quite willing to throw both at him at the moment.

But he doesn’t.

Where is the free IVF he promised all American women? Where are the lower food prices? The improved job market? Though he did fire the respected PhD statistician who failed to massage the jobs data. (She was the Director of the nonpartisan National Labour Relations Board)

Despite the threats and publicity, mass deportations on the scale discussed have bot really happened yet. Despite the promises, interest rates have not gone down.

Etc, etc, etc.

Above all where is the peace in Ukraine, in Israel - anywhere, in fact - that he promised to broker on Day 1?

Trump throws a lot of darts. A few hit the board

Relatable? As a woman with a daughter I don't relate to anyone who is so misogynistic. Or racist for that matter.

2dogsandabudgie · 30/08/2025 12:54

How things have changed even in just over a year. It used to be the left on here asking why people voted Tory now they want to know why people want to vote for Reform. Tory voters used to be bullied and ridiculed on here now it's the Reform voters. Funny old world!

scalt · 30/08/2025 12:58

Like Johnson, he promises miracles and the moon on a stick. It’s easy to do that while in opposition. Like Johnson and Blair did for themselves, he cares about one thing: Nigel Farage.

Soneone said Starmer made a lot of empty promises. Did he? As far as I remember, he made a point of under-promising. I don’t like Starmer much, but I’m deeply suspicious of politicians who promise miracles.

As a politically neutral person can you give me an example of Farages racism, other than because it’s suits a narrative or everyone says he is.

Ive yet to hear him say anything that can be classed at ‘racist’ which is a strong allegation to say about someone without it being proven.

Infact on the run up to Brexit he said we should stop uncontrolled immigration from the EU, which is predominantly white people.

And he went further and said we should allow more people from the Commonwealth here instead. Which are predominantly black and Asian people.

You don't have to look far, it is in many of the things he has said over the many years he's been hanging around like a bad smell. I tend to use a variety of sources, from live news broadcasts in TV/radio where he has been speaking, and various write ups on a range of news sites as I like to have a well-informed, broad view from which to inform my opinions, rather than rely on one single source of information. I can't do that for you, you need to read and understand to come to your own opinion.

That’s because the Tories have become an irrelevance and Reform is apparently on the rise.

Yes I always think hallitosis

Actually he is a very intelligent man with excellent communication skills and very competent in debates.

I agree that he is but that doesn't make him right, it makes him dangerous. He's also quite happy to practise strategic lying, promise things he can't possibly deliver and then twist and slither his way out of them (see his stance on arresting and deporting women and children).

I'm not sure worse suffering is what we all need though.
