Inside out clothes in the washing basket

Ishoulddomore · 12/05/2025 21:55

Why? Why can’t my family do this? It’s so simple, You put your clothes in the basket. Please turn them the right side out so I can wash them without having to do this. So annoying.

I’m not, they are

You are making more work for yourself by turning the clothes when there is no need, especially when general wisdom is to wash inside out to avoid fade.

Even more so given that you admit the kids are old enough to do their own washing.

TinyTempest · 12/05/2025 22:48

I have the opposite problem.

I wash everything inside out to cut down on bobbling and so it stands half a chance if I were to drop it while hanging it to dry.

I keep asking mine to turn them inside bloody out to save me having to do it!

Edited

Interesting, if everything was inside out for the reasons given in other posts I wouldn’t have a problem. What about when you get odd socks because someone can’t be bothered to put both in?

But I have to turn them before i iron them, or can I iron them inside out?

Why are you managing their washing to this extent? Your wife is an adult and your children are old enough to do their own laundry - if they put in an odd sock, just return an odd sock to them. If they can’t find a pair, that’s their problem.

I tell them I can only wash what I'm given 🤷‍♂️

I solve that issue by not ironing.

Another day of women falling victim to their own oppression. I wash my clothes inside out, I’m alive.

Yeah this would not be something I'd give two thoughts to. As long as its not bunched up and could trap dirt in itself then I have no problem. In fact I would usually wash and then hang to dry inside out especially if drying in the sun to prevent fading. I think sometimes you need to pick the battles you give mental energy to.

suki1964 · 12/05/2025 22:56

Jeez I get the lot, shirts inside out, socks in balls, socks in trouser legs - you name it, I get it

And in the wash they go

Not my clothes, I dont care . I did once upon a time but now its down to them when their clothes smell sour cos they took so long to dry

Any items with a motif will need to be ironed inside out anyway. Corduroy should be ironed inside out because otherwise you spoil the nape. I also iron jumpers on the wrong side to avoid shine. Admittedly shirts do need to be ironed on the right side

My kids are all grown and gone, apart from middle kid who is back here while between leases (but does his own washing now)

But when mine were younger, we had a basket where all the odd socks went to live. Once a month either I, or Mr Ayness or a kid went through it and paired what they could. Any orphan socks were chucked in the charity bag, Really don't sweat the small stuff, it'll make you happier in the long run

LilDeVille · 12/05/2025 22:57

I just put whatever is in the wash basket into the washing machine, I have never sorted anything pre-wash unless I’m already aware there is something delicate in there (but usually that wouldn’t have gone in the basket in the first place). The detergent dissolves into the water and the water gets into all sides of the fabric so it really doesn’t matter if the clothes are inside out or not :-s

Matilda1981 · 12/05/2025 21:56

I wash and dry everything as it’s put in the basket - up to my kids to sort it out when they put it away and then put it on to wear again! I’d like to think the clothes are washed equally inside and out so it doesn’t really matter how they are put into the machine!!!

Same, I only turn my own clothes the right way when they're dry too 😂 DH can do his own.

I pay mine £1 to sort the odd socks every couple of months 😁

olympicsrock · 12/05/2025 22:58

The real question is do you turn them the right way round before you fold / hand / put away.

DH doesn’t bother . I think we should , especially as it is often kids getting ready in a hurry . He packs their games kits inside out / any old how too

Odd socks annoy me. My wife has a demanding job, the least I can do is help her around the house.

I can’t see that it really matters. Inside out or right way round it all still gets washed the same. It’s not something I’d get worked up over unless it was jumpers and t-shirts taken off in oner or underwear inside trousers

Yes I do, it would annoy me if I didn’t. Especially when I iron them

I've given up, if it's inside out in the basket it gets washed, dried, folded & returned inside out. If it's one leg in & one leg out then the owner of said item has to turn it all the same way (I don't care which way!) before it is hung up to dry.

"Help her around the house"? So you don't live in the house and produce dirty washing? And you say that other forums are sexist... I think you are taking the piss

No, my mum did everything for me and my dad. I don’t want that in my house so I’m trying. It’s nothing major, I’m just asking if it’s a normal thing

If washing is put inside out in the basket it will be put back in the wardrobe inside out until they learn

Ok.. leaving aside your “help” around the house. If anyone (apart from a small child) puts an unpaired sock in the wash, the other sock isn’t something someone else needs to go hunting for imo.

What? Yes of course I have dirty washing. I help my wife around the house and she helps me around the house. What are talking about? We both work. I’m just asking about my family putting washing in the basket the right way round.
