Inside out clothes in the washing basket

Ishoulddomore · 12/05/2025 21:55

Why? Why can’t my family do this? It’s so simple, You put your clothes in the basket. Please turn them the right side out so I can wash them without having to do this. So annoying.

What about pants still attached to trousers? I’d return the clothes to their owner to be separated. No chance I’m standing doing it for them.

Clothes get washed the same inside out as right way round? Why does this matter?

I know what you mean OP. Some things wash better inside out but I'm guessing you're comparing about your family just throwing things in the laundry basket without a thought. My DH puts things in one leg in and one leg out or jumpers with t shirts still inside them...

And..?

Gowlett · 12/05/2025 22:10

Everything washed & hung inside out here.

MilnersGold · 12/05/2025 22:10

My teenagers clothes, should they make the basket get washed exactly as they are put in. I'm not checking anything that's their job.

Should something be washed at the wrong temp, wrong way out, best friends vape in the pocket, absolutely not my problem. Either do it yourself or put up and shut up. My DC are 17 and 18, obviously very different if you have a Y7 teenager

Moier · 12/05/2025 22:12

I always wash clothes inside out.. . Thought everyone did???.🤷‍♀️.
We were taught that in the Girl Guides and Domestic science O level.

it's recommended to wash clothes inside out to help preserve their color and protect embellishments from damage during the wash cycle. Turning garments inside out can also expose the dirtiest parts of the fabric to the washing process, leading to a better clean.

Also already then for hanging on line ( better for no sun damage) and ready for ironing .
You would only have to turn them inside out to iron.. ( obviously to stop iron shine/ marks).

weareallcats · 12/05/2025 22:13

Loads of my clothes need to be washed inside out and surely if they are inside out you can access the care label more easily too?

Valkyrie3 · 12/05/2025 22:13

Yes, but they’re often one leg inside out and one normal. Or one arm inside out and one not. And socks all scrunched up. It’s annoying! I’m with you OP. If someone’s doing your washing for you, at least make it easier for them!

stopringingme · 12/05/2025 22:13

Clothes get washed as they are but are hung out on the line inside out to minimise fading as the sun is on my line most the day - except for white items they are hung the right way round to ensure they keep white.

MsBette · 12/05/2025 22:14

I just peel everything off, so sometimes socks/pants/jeans are adjoined. I’m sorry.

MartinAynuss · 12/05/2025 22:15

My mother not only washes clothes inside out, but she line dries them inside out, as her mother did before her.
The theory is, if a bird shits on the clothes while drying, it will not stain the front of the garment and can be hand washed/spot washed easier.

How is she bring a poor role model to her children?

Laundry should be a shared domestic role. Children growing up around a woman who gives significance to this sort of mundane shit are learning that this mundane shit is purely women’s work. A poor example for both sons and daughters.

Missywelliot · 12/05/2025 22:17

I wash all our clothes inside out. Better for sweaty gym kit and socks.

TheChosenTwo · 12/05/2025 22:17

Huh?! Mine just go in the machine in the same state they are put into the wash basket. No way am I wasting my time unfurling any of dhs clothes thanks. Or my own come to think of it.
dc do their own.

ParsnipPuree · 12/05/2025 22:18

I feel your pain op.. drives me mad. If I’m nice enough to do their washing least they can do!

Seamond · 12/05/2025 22:19

I wash mine inside out, then they go on the line inside out so they don't fade

What about households where they split chores, for instance if she does the laundry her husband does all the dishes? Is that not acceptable to you?

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 12/05/2025 22:20

I wash everything inside out.

SadieAdlerBountyHunter · 12/05/2025 22:21

They should be inside out. But really it's not worth this much effort either way. It takes two seconds to put something the right way round when it's time to put it on.

I do all the laundry in our house, but my DH does all the meal planning, shopping and cooking 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wash and dry everything as it’s put in the basket - up to my kids to sort it out when they put it away and then put it on to wear again! I’d like to think the clothes are washed equally inside and out so it doesn’t really matter how they are put into the machine!!!

I get you, but I find it annoying to turn their clothes the right way round

OP posts:
OneDeftBiscuit · 12/05/2025 22:30

Better to wash inside out.

3beesinmybonnet · 12/05/2025 22:30

I get you OP. If my DH puts one t shirt in the basket inside out I just turn it right side out before washing, but if there's a few I tell him to do it himself or they won't get washed.
If I left them inside out I can guarantee he'd wear them inside out all day and not notice.
I am amazed at all these posters who say they turn everything inside out before washing, and presumably right side out again once dry - I only do this with certain items, I dry outside whenever possible and my clothes don't fade.

BUT I would also say that you don't HAVE to turn everything right side out - you do have a choice. If you're in charge of the laundry, you make the rules, so make it work for you.

Don’t then!

dementedpixie · 12/05/2025 21:56

You're supposed to wash them inside out especially if there are buttons or zips

I didn’t know that, I’m not sure my wife and offspring do it for that reason though!
