Sharing towels???

Inspired by another thread, do people actually have family towels that they share? This seems absolutely revolting to me 🤢

YABU - sharing towels is normal
YANBU - eww, everyone should have their own towel.

My son is sitting his GCSEs at the moment and to be nice I'm making his bed for him each morning. I've smoothed the sheets that his teenage body has slept in.
Shall I boil my hand? Or should I have worn gloves?

TheSwarm · 13/05/2025 15:43

I don't like using a damp towel for obvious reasons, but otherwise I'll grab whatever towel is hanging up without a single solitary thought as to whether a partner/ child has used it.

I mean, if you think about all the spaces and things you share as a family, to get uptight about dry towels is just completely illogical. You'll catch more from the doorhandle into the bathroom.

KelseyParkGoose · 13/05/2025 15:50

This is another one of these threads that blows my mind about the stuff that other people worry about.

We have a selection of towels.
They typically stay in circulation for a week-ish before they are washed.
Between washing anyone can use any towel to dry themselves.
I will pick a dry towel over a wet towel as a cold wet towel feels unpleasant and is ineffective. Other than that I neither know nor care who in the household as previously used it.

Seamond · 13/05/2025 15:55

We don't use the same bath towel but it is just off the pile but all the hand towels are shared, like the kitchen one and the downstairs toilet one, do people have several towels in the kitchen for different members of the family

If there were any major risk about hygiene/ germ transfer around towels it would be hand towels and I’m sure most people don’t have separate hand towels.

Or maybe they all have set ups like fancy hotels which have neat rolls of hand towels in the bathroom for single use?

It's so weird to me that people would have their husbands cock in their mouth but think sharing a towel with him or using his toothbrush is disgustingly hideous. I can't get my head around it.

Was just going to say the exact same thing 😂The ones saying they would run their husbands toothbrush under boiling water if they needed to use it?! Have they never kissed them on the mouth before?! Bizarre.

We have matching towels so no idea whose is whose. We shower, hang them over towel radiator / banister to dry and then the next person just uses whichever is dry. Can't see how this is "grim" or "disgusting at all".

Would love to know what these posters think of oral sex 😬

But if you have conjunctivitis or athletes foot, you are told not to share towels, so for this reason (and anything else that may not be nice to transfer), we don’t share.

You don’t always know you have these things straight away, so I’d rather stick to my own.

😂

Icexream · 13/05/2025 16:39

I don't know how you keep them seperate. I'm not washing towels after every use and if they're in the bathroom then people will use them.

What are the "risks"? You share a home with these people, kiss them, share a bed with them, look after them when they're sick, what additional risk is there from sharing a towel to make it so disgusting?

We only use those ones they give you in Indian restaurants - single use, steaming straight from the microwave (?)

HangingOver · 13/05/2025 17:05

Me and DP have a few on the go at once and each grab whichever is dry, then after a few days they all get washed.

🤢🤢🤢 Never have done.. never will.
Always clean towel every day too.
Nothing as awful as having a lovely shower.. feeling great then using a towel from day before.

No-one needs a clean towel every day. You must have to do a lot of washing.

The green emojis are rather OTT IMO.

Do you change your bedding every day?

Beautifulweeds · 13/05/2025 17:58

When I was younger I would use any towel no matter what. Now, I do prefer my own because I know it won't be thrown on the floor, used to wipe snot away etc. and keep it on my hook lol 😆

Syuni · 13/05/2025 18:08

These threads always bring out the hygiene freaks. The neuroticism is off the scale with some people here.

I can't say I've ever recoiled as I use my towel from the day before. It obviously doesn't smell freshly washed but it's not filthy.

Definitely don't share towels with anybody with some contagious ailment, in that instance separate hand towels and bath towels are in place whereas normally I just have a shared hand towel and don't worry if we use each others bath towel on occasion.

"Nothing" so awful? Wow, I'd quite like your life!

Define your terms

Sharing towels could mean one clean dry towel taken from a 'shared' bank of family towels, used by a person and then put in the wash. So shared in the way that a hotel towel is 'shared' with strangers. So one towel, one use but over time multiple users.

Sharing towels could mean a single face towel hanging in the bathroom which multiple people use to dry their face before it is washed, or a single bath towel which mulitple people use to dry their genitals, arm pits etc. One towel, multiple users before a wash.

The first 'sharing' is fine and not really sharing, the second form is unhygenic and will increase the problem with headlice, thread worms or any communicable diseases.

I prefer us all having our own towel, it makes sense to me for various reasons but if I get out the shower and mine isn't where it should be but somebody else's is then I'll just use that, find my own when I'm dressed and hang both up where they belong. No big deal, I'm not likely to catch anything that I won't have already caught because I've hugged someone or already know they have worms or something in which case I won't use their towel, I'll get a clean one.

I draw the line at poo stains but I've never seen one on any of our towels so I think I'm safe on the odd occasion I become a towel sharer.

I know you can't help how you feel, but you must know this is irrational right? Please tell me you know this?

Dutchhouse14 · 13/05/2025 23:14

We always shared the same towels growing up, just got a dry one from towel rail in bathroom and they were washed once a, week so when I had DC I carried on doing the same.
When my DC became teens they decided this was disgusting and we all need our own towels. Which basically means they have several towels on their bedroom floor which they've used just once then bring the all down to wash which fills the laundry basket and creates tons of washing it's a constant argument!
Me and DH still share, I've survived 50 years sharing a towels with close family members.
Clearly I give any guests their own one!

Talipesmum · 13/05/2025 23:22

I feel like I’m an outlier here because we all keep our own towels until they’re washed, no communal “pick any towel from the rail” sharing. But this is mostly because it enables us to wait a good week between towel washes - everyone is happier using their “own” 6-days-old towel than someone else’s. It also means we all look after our own towels and hang them up nicely cos it’s on us if we’ve left it all crumply so it doesn’t dry out. No one just heads off to get a new one and leaves the old ones all over the place - we all just keep using them till we remember to put them in the wash and distribute a new batch.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/05/2025 08:06

I have just used the towel Mr Monkey used about 2 hours earlier before he headed off to work. I now patiently wait "shared towel death".

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 14/05/2025 08:09

We have family towels, they do get washed between uses!

We also share cutlery and dishes, again washed after use.

I probably shouldn't tell you about bathtime for kids in the 80s if shared towels grosses you out that much 😂

😂😂😂
