Sounds mad but it’s true, honest! If you have 3 kids…

Same dad, no miscarriages to ‘break the chain’, if the first 2 are opposite sex, the third will be whatever number 2 was - so BGG, or GBB. Not BGB, or GBG.

It sounds crazy but it’s something I noticed ages ago - every time somebody announces they’re having a third, and they have one of each, I know it will be the same as the second child.

Prove me wrong, Mumsnetters!

Same Dad. No miscarriages. BGB

Laura1978 · 09/05/2025 07:19

Good point, that’s exactly what happened to me!

Amba1998 · 09/05/2025 07:21

Don’t know anyone who has 3 kids where it has followed that pattern sorry!

I do know 95% of everyone I know with 2 kids has the same though. Barely know anyone with one of each

OneLilacCrow · 09/05/2025 07:26

William and Kate had BGB

Umbrella15 · 09/05/2025 08:16

Sorry your theroy isnt correct. I have gbg

AutumnScream · 09/05/2025 08:24

Sex is determined by sperm so my dps kids are BGB.

Waterweight · 09/05/2025 08:50

To whoever mentioned the Cambridge's kids there would be no real way of knowing if they born in a unbroken line, Kate's always classed her pregnancys as high risk & approved information being released about hospital visit, long pre-maternity leaves & is widely assumed to have now had a hysterectomy.

So possibly a few generations down the line it may come out that she struggled quite a bit & might have tried for a 4th or lost a few along the way.

GRex · 09/05/2025 09:06

It's a bit mad to insert pretend possible miscarriages to suit OP's theory rather than accept that any baby might be boy or girl, particularly given there is no particular reason why BG / GB pregnancies would have any impact on which sex is born next. We know a lot of multiples where it's all over the map but ignoring later siblings GBG and BGB seem to be most common, it's meaningless.

IridescentRainbow · 09/05/2025 09:06

Not true, I have BGBG.

BlueFlowers5 · 09/05/2025 09:18

Wrong - mine were GGB.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 09/05/2025 09:47

Nope, my Aunts kids were BBG, and I have a friend who is BGB.

FarmGirl78 · 09/05/2025 09:49

Friend has BGBGB.

Couldn't be more wrong for her!

RavenofEngland · 09/05/2025 10:15

I have two kids BG. By this logic if we had chosen to have a third child then DD would’ve got her wish for a sister. But that’s never gonna happen now because I split up with their dad and there’s no damn way I’m having another kid.

NimbleBee · 09/05/2025 10:26

No it's different in my family sister has BGBGG.
Look at Princess Catherine BGB.

Sprocket1 · 09/05/2025 10:37

BGB for me

mondaytosunday · 09/05/2025 10:43

Nope. Friends 1 & 2 & 3 have BBG. Friend 4 has GBG. BIL has G then twin B (actually not sure that counts), stepson has BGB. I do know two families that have three of the same sex, but definitely more who have the third different to number 2. Of those who have more kids: BGBGG, BBGB, BGGBB (ah that one works for you)!

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 09/05/2025 11:06

The OP not talking about when the first two children are the same sex

if the first 2 are opposite sex, the third will be whatever number 2 was - so BGG, or GBB. Not BGB, or GBG.

She's wrong with my DC still though- same father no miscarrages DD1,DS,DD2.

Plus knowing about misscariages may not be complete right outside close freinds/family but suspect OP has confirmation bias.

That's not to say some couples do not have 50/50 chance or that wider things can't influence ratio of sex born - even subtle things in UK in 1973-74 more boys than girls ever were born.

There are all sorts of things people talk about when it comes to siblings matching for not.

I heard someone say that the first born favours the father in looks and hair colour, and the second the mother.

There will always be someone who matches the theories.

This only works where the first 2 are opposite sex - then 3 is the same as number 2. If that makes sense!

I have a mental image of sperm having a conversation on their way up the passage, deciding who will get there first and do the deed.
