Just17 magazine and Rufus the model

Random bored Wednesday afternoon work discussion...

Just17 magazine used to regularly feature a model called Rufus. One person had his picture all over her wall. Another person thought he was odd looking.

We need to settle who was right! 🤣 (From a teenage girl point of view, not an adult woman perving over a topless young model! Otherwise eww!)

Who was Rufus?
Is he still a model?
Was he poster worthy or odd looking?

Personally I had no opinion on him. If he wasn't David Duchovny, I wasn't interested. 😂

YABU - I fancied him
YANBU - Nah, I'd skip those pages

That looks like what a lot of MN user wardrobes now!

I would wear almost all if it, the coats are gorgeous as our the shirts and skirts. I bet that coat is fantastic quality compared to today's.

Is this the right one?

Yes that is Rufus. Where did you find that picture, I’d love to see more. A little trip down memory lane.

The girl on the left on the left hand page really looks like an actress whose name I can't recall.

It's Ruth Wilson I'm thinking of. Google tells me she modelled for Mizz in her teens... so it is possibly her!

oldmanandtheangel · 08/05/2025 13:25

Susan was part asian I think? Very pretty. Collette featured heavily in teen mags. I didn't fancy any of the men, too pretty for me. Malcolm just looked a bit oily, hair wise. I just wanted to look like the girls.

Pollenandbloom · 08/05/2025 13:47

There was a model called Irene in either J17 or Sugar around the 1998 - 2000 mark, she was stunning but I convinced myself I would look like her if I plucked my eyebrows into the same shape. I looked absolutely nothing like her and my eyebrows are still the same unflattering shape 25 years later (think it's referred to as the millennial/comma eyebrow)

I got one of those free with 'Shout' magazine. I remember that popular model on there too.. was her name Jo? Very skinny. Apparently a country girl...

I’ve got the Shout comb! It came with the first issue in 1993 and was plastic and bright pink. I still use it to comb wet hair - I was just thinking the other day, bloody hell, this is over 30 years old now, but I’ve never found another one that does the job as well.

Here’s some pics of a photo shoot that made 15 year old me want every single item of clothing on the pages. I did, in fact, have the red lace Snob dress from the last photo but in black.

I've been very much enjoying this thread - I used to read J17 a lot and still have loads of copies knocking around! Is this the photoshoot you mean? November 17th 1993...(incidentally, the magazine cost 70p back then!)

OMG YES!!!!! This is the very one! I've been dying to see it again, thanks so much.
I got my hair cut just like that.

No problem! Do you want to see the other photos? I didn't want to put them up all at once in case it was the wrong photoshoot! 😄

walktheplank · 08/05/2025 15:18

And talking of free gifts, I'm pretty sure I still have the lime green J17 purse somewhere...never used it though because I didn't like the colour!

I've got the photos ready and waiting but can't seem to upload them at the moment! Will try again later...

curtaintwitcher78 · 08/05/2025 15:53

No worries!

I quite fancied Rufus Sewell back in the day but that ain't him.

Olsen · 08/05/2025 17:31

Which one is Rufus?

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 08/05/2025 17:38

This brought back memories. I bumped into Malcolm back in the day. Can’t remember if it was Victoria or Kings Cross.
Anyhoo dear readers, he was stunning irl!

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 08/05/2025 17:48

Weren’t the female models a healthy size back then? Slim with lovely figures but not hyper-skinny.

Habbyhadno · 08/05/2025 18:06

I loved Just Seventeen so much I ended up working in magazines. I remember my friend chasing a car down the road screaming because she (supposedly) saw James Layton in it - loser! 😄 the girl in the Rufus photo above looks terrified.

Butchyrestingface · 08/05/2025 18:08

Yegads, it's all coming back to me now!

Yep it’s Malcolm and James I remember! I don’t recognise Rufus. I do recall the blonde twin lads but I liked the brunettes! Wow, really takes you back!

@Gahdammit you really have created something magical with this post 🥹

Namechange6578 · 08/05/2025 18:28

I remembered wrongly then cos I always thought Cassius was the name given to Vernon Kaye when he was modelling in those mags!

Letsgetthiswrongagain · 08/05/2025 20:36

I was 18 when those Coats fashion pages came out - my kids are aged 14-18 and wouldn't look out of place in them now. In fact one of my 14 year olds even has the Reebok trainers in the first picture.
The kids are always asking why my their dad and I didn't keep our clothes from when we were late teens/early twenties so they could wear them now!

Do you remember in one of the teen magazines where they stopped young men in the street to ask various questions and printed a picture of them? My husband was one of them! I'm sure we have a copy of it in the loft somewhere.
