Just17 magazine and Rufus the model

Random bored Wednesday afternoon work discussion...

Just17 magazine used to regularly feature a model called Rufus. One person had his picture all over her wall. Another person thought he was odd looking.

We need to settle who was right! 🤣 (From a teenage girl point of view, not an adult woman perving over a topless young model! Otherwise eww!)

Who was Rufus?
Is he still a model?
Was he poster worthy or odd looking?

Personally I had no opinion on him. If he wasn't David Duchovny, I wasn't interested. 😂

I very briefly dated Dan Corsi when he was in boy-band Northern Line. 1999 I think. His cousin is Paul Nichols who was in Eastenders at the time.

Nope. It's the link generated by the share button of the Just 17 fan page on fb which I browsed through, trying to find a photo for the OP.
It has many photos of covers on it, takes requests (the mind boggles) and someone had two years of covers so I assumed they'd know this bloke. I am in my 50s but don't recall him at all.

I was living in London and met up with a friend at a bar in Leicester Square. We were sat at a large table and these two lads came over and asked if they could share as there were no more seats. Got talking, then we were leaving to go for dinner, Dan asked for my number. Long story short, he'd call me when he was in town and bored basically and I'd drop everything to go see him. Then they started being away a lot more and I had a job that didn't lend itself to me schlepping across London on a Wednesday night and clubbing to the early hours. It fizzled out when I said I couldn't/wouldn't be at his beck and call. He was totally gorgeous though.

Ah, so he was just like any other Tom Dick or Harry then. That’s disappointing. In my teenage dreams he was so much better than that!

I wouldn’t know as I was banned from reading J17 and other similar magazines like Sugar 😂 I would have been so jealous of you all back in the day!

Tony Dowding was the blonde one. I can't actually find any reference to Ally being in Just 17/Mizz or whatever now but I'm 99% sure he was 🤔 I couldn't find a pic of Rufus though either till somebody above posted one!

Can you remember the photo shoot where one of the regular models had had her hair cut, and they were in some kind of beach/port in windy weather wearing pea coats/reefer jackets? I know that's v specific but anyway, I took that copy to the hairdressers a few weeks before my 16th birthday and said "make me look like that please". I had a big plait right down my back and after some discussion he just chopped it off and did it. Then off I went to get a navy fisherman's jacket, navy mini skirt and black DMs 😂
Then my mother cried.

God how I wish I’d kept all my old J17 magazines!

I was an early adopter (1985 maybe) and there were no male models in it back then. A regular model was someone called Kelly who went out with Terence Trent D’Arby. She was gorgeous then and still gorgeous now.

I remember Malcolm now. My mum loved him 😆

Anita Naik lives down the road from me - our kids were at nursery together. James Layton is now a cameraman, still good looking! Lisa Faulkner also modelled for Just Seventeen.

I seem to recall a photoshoot with Malcolm and a dog.

He was definitely my favourite, along with James Layton. Did james do any TV after... as wondering why I knew his surname 🤔

I’ve got a few Just Seventeens somewhere - 1992 and 1993 I think. None of the photoshoots mentioned here, but I’ll try and dig them out this evening after work and post pics if anyone would like to see.

Oh I'm sure he was great in that! Fresh were very cheesy, a bit like Big Fun 😂 The lyrics to their song included "Come on baby, feel my rhythm... and I'll show you the way to heaven" 😂

I've figured that now! Allly in BBI doesn't look anything like the Alaistair I remember form J17. I did like BBI back in the day. I fancied the girly looking one (another giveaway of the days that proceeded....)🤣

I've been very much enjoying this thread - I used to read J17 a lot and still have loads of copies knocking around! Is this the photoshoot you mean? November 17th 1993...(incidentally, the magazine cost 70p back then!)

The girl on the left on the left hand page really looks like an actress whose name I can't recall.

Oh wow, this takes me back.
I had a massive crush on Rufus, he was all over my walls. And those blond twins who are mentioned up thread, I think they came along a bit later.
But Rufus was my absolute favourite. Such gorgeous dark hair.
