To return a new Toyota car

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 20:26

We recently changed our 3 years Toyota Corolla for a new Toyota Corolla; through PCP lease, we paid 3,000 and are paying £350 per month.

As we knew the Corolla already we did not ask for test drive. Sale man did not mention any new feature.

The new car comes with an intelligent speed control system which beeps all the time when you go over the speed limit, we live in a 20 mile zone, so as soon as you go one mile over it starts beeping.

The system can be switched off by going through various menus; you have to do it every single journey as it rests when you turn the car off.

It is basically driving me crazy and we are seriously thinking in returning it and purchase our old car back. We have to pay another 2,000 to the lease losing 5k.

What would you do in this situation. We are assuming our car is available and they will se it to us for the price they told us before we signed new lease.

We have had the new car for nearly a week.

We have complained to Toyota but I don’t think they will do anything. They basically sold the car to the lease company. I believe that is how it works.

Haven’t you already posted about this? Why don’t you just stick to the speed limit?

YYYDlilah · 06/05/2025 20:32

Stick to the speed limit, then it won't be an issue.

Shade17 · 06/05/2025 20:32

Is it a PCP or a lease? Have you been given some figures for the return already? If your old car is still there then I’d assume they’ll sell it back you at retail price rather than the trade price they gave you for it.

BakelikeBertha · 06/05/2025 20:33

Sorry OP, but I think you can legally only reject a new car if it is actually faulty, but not if you just don't like it for some reason. Have you asked the manufacturer if there is any way of turning off this feature permanently?

TennesseeStella · 06/05/2025 20:35

I'd rather turn the feature off every single time I got in the car than lose five grand!

LadyKenya · 06/05/2025 20:38

Stick to the speed limit. It only beeps when you are over it!

ChompandaGrazia · 06/05/2025 20:38

I have that on my car. I solve it by not speeding.

PCP. Yes, figures given, we need to pay another extra 2k on top of the 3k we already paid.

Have not asked re old car yet.

Yes, we asked. There is no way yo turn off permanently.

Problem with the system is it isn’t always correct. My car often tells me the wrong speed limit!

Looking online you always have to switch it off - there doesn’t seem to be away to turn it off once and save the setting.

Whether this is worth £5000 to fix only you can say.

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 20:41

You know if you go over speed limit as you can see on the screen and then go back to the right one. You don’t need a beeping sound,

It is very easy to go one mile over 20

An expensive exercise for sure. I’d imagine your old car will be £2-3k more than you sold it for.

I guess that may be the case increasing the loss to 7k

Do you live on a 20 mile per hour zone?

Dogdaycommeth · 06/05/2025 20:44

This is standard on all new cars going forward. So unless you return for used you will have the same problem on any new car.

moostermum · 06/05/2025 20:45

All new cars have this. You can turn it off each time you start the car or find a shortcut button and use that.

cheddercherry · 06/05/2025 20:46

Its on all brand new cars now, so you’re going to have this issue with all new models

There is no shortcut bottom; we even went to the dealer again and spoke to the mechanics; there is only one way to turn it off and that is by going through different menus.

This is something all new cars do, nothing car markets can do as they now have to comply. Annoying but we are all stuck with it

True, but perhaps some of them are more straight forward to switch off

Can you change the alert setting at all? It can be that you can set 1mph, 3mph or 5mph. Sadly it will count toward the safety feature of the car. Since 2024 it is a permanent feature you cannot turn off I believe.

Always test drive a car because then these sorts of things become apparent.

Ok but in the future it may be that it can’t be avoided so best get used to it now

stick to the speed limit!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/05/2025 20:55

I don't understand why you can't just stay within the limit? Sure, it's easy to go over by a mile or two, but if you do, surely you just slow down and it stops?

If the issue is that you're actively wanting to speed, then I understand your annoyance. That would be pretty crap on your part though.
