To return a new Toyota car

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 20:26

We recently changed our 3 years Toyota Corolla for a new Toyota Corolla; through PCP lease, we paid 3,000 and are paying £350 per month.

As we knew the Corolla already we did not ask for test drive. Sale man did not mention any new feature.

The new car comes with an intelligent speed control system which beeps all the time when you go over the speed limit, we live in a 20 mile zone, so as soon as you go one mile over it starts beeping.

The system can be switched off by going through various menus; you have to do it every single journey as it rests when you turn the car off.

It is basically driving me crazy and we are seriously thinking in returning it and purchase our old car back. We have to pay another 2,000 to the lease losing 5k.

What would you do in this situation. We are assuming our car is available and they will se it to us for the price they told us before we signed new lease.

We have had the new car for nearly a week.

Turn the radio up!

If you use your indicators, which you should anyway to indicate you’re moving out over the line, this won’t happen.

Don't speed, use indicators and for fuck sake don’t drive in the centre lane if the left hand lane is free. All points that people seem to have forgotten.

It’s not that simple. On country lanes that narrow it thinks you are going over to the other side of the road so tries to drag you back. Luckily this feature is turn offable. The idea is great but the technology is not there yet

Keroppi · 07/05/2025 07:57

Wow I'm glad I have always had old bangers! I don't want anything moving my wheel, beeping loads or talking to me.

To all those saying don’t speed - that’s great if the car gets the speed limit right all the time. It doesn’t!

Near me, coming out of a 30 zone into national speed limit the sign is obscured. You would have to spend a long time with the car beeping at you until another sign (no repeaters needed on national speed limit road).

That is just one example of many many places the car will get the speed limit wrong.

It might be a good system in theory but the tech isn’t there yet.

The car doesn’t read the road signs.

bluecloudme · 07/05/2025 08:07

Op I have just had this problem with different new vehicle. Pps saying just stick to speed limit perhaps don’t realise that half the time the car doesn’t know correct limit.

In my case however vehicle had an additional issue in that lane correction came on even when switched off. Also I think was not calibrated correctly so was actually dangerous.

I gave opportunity to fix which dealership did not take so I returned vehicle as faulty and am getting a refund. I did have to be firm but they have been ok about it.

I did take legal advice first. Dealership not obliged to take back unless faulty. Are you sure the vehicle is doing what it was intended to do?

I now have a two year old vehicle which beeps less! Very happy with it.

These new cars are awful with their well intentioned but really badly designed “safety features” which imo are actually dangerous. Loud excessive beeping is a serious distraction.

pm me if you like op

Totally agree technology is not there yet. There will be accidents.

I'd rather just turn it off every journey than lose that amount of money. I couldn't afford to lose that amount of money to be honest.

We have this on one of our cars - we just turn it off every time we get in the car. 4 months in it is second nature to just turn it off when you get in now.

PCP. Yes, figures given, we need to pay another extra 2k on top of the 3k we already paid.

Have not asked re old car yet.

Madness.

It’s not all done on road signs it’s gps data so it knows location ally you are in a speed zone. Unfortunately it’s not accurate I’ve found!!!

Yes, whatever the reason it's not actuarate. I was driving on a national speed limit dual carriageway this morning for about 5 miles with the thing flashing and beeping because I was going over 30mph.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 07/05/2025 08:17

You're willing to lose 7k over a beeping sound that you have control of.

There is no helping some people

PaintDecisions · 07/05/2025 08:18

Our Focus goes apeshit on one road in our town as it misreads a side road sign, so the car is adamant I'm speeding in a 30 bit I'm actually driving on a national speed limit road for the next five miles.

Fortunately I can mute my stupid car as it whines the entire time about your speed.

These warning systems are not foolproof and you should be able to override them.

Just like the lane control ones - they don't understand that old lane markings are often still visible, and I've had a hire car try to yank me into lane 3 because it got confused. That car nearly killed me in a dangerous manoeuvre. I managed to turn it off but it was one that came back on every time you turned the engine off and on again. Dangerous.

Which driving test did you take? You don’t indicate to move around parked cars unless you need to inform oncoming vehicles.

I promise you get used to the beeping. I barely hear mine now. It is helpful on the motorways for sneaky speed limit drops.

PaintDecisions · 07/05/2025 08:21

That depends on your car. Mine definitely reads the road signs.

beAsensible1 · 07/05/2025 08:23

Not sure why everyone is being dense. Car speed toggles and change road to road.
as well as the intelligent speed often being bloody wrong

if it was constantly beeping I’d go mad, mine already likes to go off at imaginary obstructions every now and then.

let alone you cant use it as evidence against a speeding ticket. So I don’t see the point.

EarlyMorningWork · 07/05/2025 08:25

Lots on you tube about trying to switch it off and some Toyota owners page.
One Post suggested you might be able to change the notification type, so message rather than sound, another suggests there was a parameter to increase the speed it alerted at you, by a small margin.
Might all be different by model, but worth checking out I think, if you haven’t already.
Engineer at a dealership told me absolute rubbish about my car once and weren’t able to fix an issue, another garage, at great expense, however, got to the bottom of it.

Stick to the speed limit, then it won't be an issue.

This.
It's a 20 mile restriction for a reason.

If you’re driving well though there are lots of times you’ll cross a line without needing to indicate. It’s a bloody annoying feature which is just as well that it can be turned off.

FiftynFooked · 07/05/2025 08:38

I’ve got a Volvo that does the same. The sound can be disabled by pressing a button on the steering wheel but it does have to be done every time I use the car. It’s all very well saying “stick to the speed limit” but it’s quite often wrong. For example the other day I went along a stretch of road for about 2 miles and it had weirdly picked the speed limit up as 5 miles per hour!! I know they’re linked to the road signs and they do seem very glitchy. I have no problem sticking to a 30 mile an hour speed limit but when it randomly drops to 20 for no apparent reason (no signs saying the limit has dropped) you’ll soon incur the wrath of other drivers if you crawl along just to stop your car beeping!

Yep me too. I dread the day my lovely old car needs to go to the scrap heap in the sky. I bloody love the fact that it’s as basic as they come. No irritating beeps or trying to kill me by swerving on a whim. New cars sound very distracting and irritating.

Totally agree with this. And if it was accurate it wouldn't be a problem but for me, a lot of the time it thinks the speed limit is different to what it actually is. They need to get the tech working before they implement the legislation.

As I said I have no problem with the speed warning.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/05/2025 09:02

Just turn your music up louder as you speed away... 😉

caramac4 · 07/05/2025 09:21

Mine does the same and needs to be turned off everytime. It's new safety features that most new cars are having. It's habit now for me and my car isn't a Toyota. 😀

Critical thinking @Malvalacome on! I can tell you’re not a driver!
When you’re pulling in behind parked cars for 2 seconds to allow another driver past, it’s misleading and dangerous to use indicators, especially if the road you’re on has junctions on it! The street next to DD’s school has parked cars either side of it and turn offs. Every day we have to play dodgems and pull in multiple times to let each other past etc. So if I used my indicators, it would make other drivers think I’m turning off and would cause a huge accident.

Come back when you’ve learnt to drive!
