To return a new Toyota car

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 20:26

We recently changed our 3 years Toyota Corolla for a new Toyota Corolla; through PCP lease, we paid 3,000 and are paying £350 per month.

As we knew the Corolla already we did not ask for test drive. Sale man did not mention any new feature.

The new car comes with an intelligent speed control system which beeps all the time when you go over the speed limit, we live in a 20 mile zone, so as soon as you go one mile over it starts beeping.

The system can be switched off by going through various menus; you have to do it every single journey as it rests when you turn the car off.

It is basically driving me crazy and we are seriously thinking in returning it and purchase our old car back. We have to pay another 2,000 to the lease losing 5k.

What would you do in this situation. We are assuming our car is available and they will se it to us for the price they told us before we signed new lease.

We have had the new car for nearly a week.

@PaintDecisionsLet me guess, it was a KIA?!

There should be an option to permanently disable the beeping by having it automatically set the limiter instead. So you can choose one or the other. If you have it in the limiter mode you could override it by pushing the accelerator down hard and it would switch to the beep mode instead.

Critical thinking @Malvalacome on! I can tell you’re not a driver!
When you’re pulling in behind parked cars for 2 seconds to allow another driver past, it’s misleading and dangerous to use indicators, especially if the road you’re on has junctions on it! The street next to DD’s school has parked cars either side of it and turn offs. Every day we have to play dodgems and pull in multiple times to let each other past etc. So if I used my indicators, it would make other drivers think I’m turning off and would cause a huge accident.

Come back when you’ve learnt to drive!

You don’t cross the centre line when pulling in to the side of the road, do you? So that wouldn’t be triggering the “keep in lane” behaviour. No need to be so insulting when you don’t understand what is being described.

But there ARE lots of occasions when you cross a line without needing to indicate. Indicating when you don’t need to is a sign of a pretty poor driver.

Ooh, I can't remember now - it was a hybrid something or other with a high driving position.

My car has the lane thing too, which is always off, but it's not aggressive. This monstrosity wrenched the car across in front of an overtaking car and scared the crap out of me.

I get a lot of hire cars for work, so have to learn the differences with them all but this was the worst experience I've had of the lane controls - and all because of a ghost mark from roadworks a couple of years ago. Never left it on again in any car!

HamieandHave · 07/05/2025 08:02

The car doesn’t read the road signs.

Mine does. So if it’s a temporary 40mph through road works for example it will change.

Isobel201 · 07/05/2025 11:12

I've got an Aygo X with a non audible warning at the moment, but yeah its turning to audible from 2024 onwards. Even if you swapped now and lost money, you will have to do this eventually with any newer car in 5-10 years time.

There’ll likely be third party options to have them permanently coded out by then.

Stick to the speed limit. It only beeps when you are over it!

That’s all well and good good if it’s correct
mine doesn’t beep but flashes (Volvo) so less annoying
mine is wrong so much of the time it’s laughable

it thinks almost the whole of my village is 5mph not the 30mph it actually is
the village where we go to Cubs it thinks the 20mph section outside the school is a 70 limit
it thinks big sections of the A1 are 30 or 40 when they are national speed limit - it’s become somewhat of a game ‘guess what the car thinks’ & is a known problem according to Volvo forum
it’s definitely something about the software/mapping on this car because our previous one (iPace) had the same feature and was hardly ever wrong

im hoping this is correct. I think the technology is very early just now. I’m going to aim to keep my non beepy car for as long as possible and just hope that things have improved by then!

How unnecessarily rude. Those of us who have been driving for many years, without accidents, having taken a UK driving test in manual cars, do indicate. It is good communication to other road users, that you are doing something other than driving in a straight line. I can't bear this modern trend for no indication - no wonder there are more accidents.

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 21:30

Good idea. Thank you

There will probably be a fuse that you can temporarily remove, until MOT time. Just make sure you understand what else it controls.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2025 12:25

We’ve just got a new Toyota Corolla too, and live in a 20mph zone and regularly drive through others.

its slightly annoying that it doesn’t have the same tolerance as the speedo itself (ie beeps when speedo says 20 but satnav is slightly under. But it only does 3 beeps (unless you’re wobbling below and above 20. We’ve adjusted to it.

The other slightly annoying thing is that occasionally it picks up speed limit sign on a side road but again, it’s just 3 beeps until it sorts itself out.

anyway, YABU. It’s really quite easy to drive so you get no more than the 3 beeps and they’re quite useful when there is a change of limit somewhere unfamiliar.

TheSwarm · 07/05/2025 12:29

It's all very people going on about "keeping to the speed limit" but as a general rule these systems are just a bit shit.

On my car, by default the speed limiter/ alarm is linked up to traffic sign recognition. All good, except the system on my car:

Picks up speed limit signs for sliproads etc, causing the system to go mad because although I'm still under a NSL, it thinks the limit is now 40.

Can't see through trees etc, so when I go from a 20 zone in my village to the 40 main road, it can't see the limit sign, doesn't know that the speed limit has gone up and so goes mental when I accelerate up to 40.

Can't tell the difference between a train speed limit sign and a road limit sign.

On my newer car it has lane keep assist turned on by default, which not only beeps at you if you go over a central line, but violently tries to steer you back into the lane.

I have to turn the system off, because if I'm on a particular road near me which is narrow and potholed and I try to steer out of the way of a pothole without indicating - which, let's be honest, nobody in the real world indicates around fucking potholes when there are no other cars for miles - the car will fight me to try to ensure I fuck my tyres up.

So yeah, that's safe.

I’m pretty sure our new Corolla gives three beeps in some of those situations but then shuts up - hardly ‘going mental’.

Daisydiary · 07/05/2025 18:29

I have this on a 2024 car. It’s infuriating but the way all new cars will be. The simple way to stop it would be to stop speeding - BUT - the number of times the car picks up on a 20 side road when I’m on a 50 dual carriageway, or can’t understand changed speed limits when there are roadworks, is ridiculous! I think I’ve become immune to it now but the DC hate it, DP hates it, anyone traveling with me thinks I’ve got problems with the car. Def a big design fault!

Ireolu · 07/05/2025 18:51

We have this on our 25 plate ix. We also live in london with a 20 mile/hr speed limit. It's annoying but it's ultimately a safety feature and we didnt even consider returning the car because of it. It also goes off in our car after about a few seconds of beeping.

Reliablesource · 07/05/2025 19:51

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 20:41

You know if you go over speed limit as you can see on the screen and then go back to the right one. You don’t need a beeping sound,

It is very easy to go one mile over 20

Most new Toyotas have a speed limiter switch which allows the car to recognise the speed limit and then you just press the switch and the car won’t let you exceed that speed until it recognises a different limit and then you can press again to adjust your maximum speed and so on. That will prevent you creeping over the speed limit continually.

There is no way of permanently disabling the speed limit beeping because you’re meant to stick to the speed limit!

Edited… we’ve not tried that function and I think on re-reading I’ve probably misunderstood what it does.

Blushingm · 07/05/2025 20:51

All new cars have to have this…..why complain to Toyota?
