To return a new Toyota car

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 20:26

We recently changed our 3 years Toyota Corolla for a new Toyota Corolla; through PCP lease, we paid 3,000 and are paying £350 per month.

As we knew the Corolla already we did not ask for test drive. Sale man did not mention any new feature.

The new car comes with an intelligent speed control system which beeps all the time when you go over the speed limit, we live in a 20 mile zone, so as soon as you go one mile over it starts beeping.

The system can be switched off by going through various menus; you have to do it every single journey as it rests when you turn the car off.

It is basically driving me crazy and we are seriously thinking in returning it and purchase our old car back. We have to pay another 2,000 to the lease losing 5k.

What would you do in this situation. We are assuming our car is available and they will se it to us for the price they told us before we signed new lease.

We have had the new car for nearly a week.

You posted this the other day. Just stick to the speed limit

Do you live on a 20 mile per hour zone?

Yes. So I drive at the speed limit.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/05/2025 20:55

I don't understand why you can't just stay within the limit? Sure, it's easy to go over by a mile or two, but if you do, surely you just slow down and it stops?

If the issue is that you're actively wanting to speed, then I understand your annoyance. That would be pretty crap on your part though.

Correct, I see if I go over and go back to the right one by looking at the speed on the scree; you don’t need a beeping sound; plus is not always accurate

Stop speeding? IDK, seems like a good option

shalamakooky · 06/05/2025 20:59

Don’t speed?

Guavafish1 · 06/05/2025 20:59

All new cars are like this now…

Cloudyvibes · 06/05/2025 21:00

Never heard of this new feature. Have a 24 plate and a 74 plate so both less then a year old, different makes and neither one has this.

It would definitely annoy me but I would just turn it off each time I got in if that was an option. I do stick to speed limits but if i went over by 1 mph then it would annoy me.

Snapncrackle · 06/05/2025 21:00

I have this on my new car and my other half has it as well on his car

on mine it only starts when / if I go 10 percent over the speed limit but on his it starts as soon as you go over the the speed limit

it’s not that loud
I just turn the music up but I do try not to speed

ThingsgetbetterwithalittlebitofRazzmatazz · 06/05/2025 21:01

I had this on a courtesy car recently, it drove me crazy! The worst was in car parks it would read the 5 or 10 mile per hour speed limit but it wouldn't recognise the change in speed limit when you came out onto the road so would just bleep at you until you eventually pass a speed limit sign and it realises you don't have to drive at 5mph any more! Very distracting really.

HappiestSleeping · 06/05/2025 21:02

Was it you who posted about the red stitching too?

Glad, I am not the only one

yes, it is extremely distracting

Oh god there’s a feature in the new KIA Sportage that beeps and turns the wheel slightly whenever you cross the centre line (obviously you have to sometimes! Especially if avoiding parked cars on a narrow road) and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve nearly crashed. It also can only be switched off every single journey

sanityisamyth · 06/05/2025 21:04

Put the cruise control on at 20 and then you won’t go over the limit!

New european regulations which we have adopted, perhaps only started for 2025 cars

I think these new features are more distracting than helpful

Every time I go in my car I need to switch off the LKA, collision assist, and speed warnings . It takes around 8-9 taps on the screen but get used to it very quickly.

Seawolves · 06/05/2025 21:09

Set the speed limiter to the speed limit?

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 21:12

Should not the sale man mentioned this? We would have certainly kept the old one if we knew, until they perfect this system or decide that is actually not helping anything.

A lot of garages will have a cooling off period during which you can return the car and get refunded etc at no loss. Double check all your paperwork , look on their website to see their offer etc

Not on brand new cars they don’t.

Yes, we asked. There is no way yo turn off permanently.

Edited

Yes I think it is a regulatory thing that it can't be permanently disabled. I suspect it will be the same on any new car.

I'm sure you'll get used it it. Not sure it's worth ££££s to buy back an old car.

I have it on my car and it is annoying. For those saying stick to the speed limit, mine seems notoriously bad a recognising when you go into a new speed zone, especially if the road sign is dirty.

Thank you. Maybe I just need to get use to it; perhaps it just becomes normal.

Does it have a limit setting? If so, set it to 20 when you get to that area. The speed limit is there for a reason. We live in a 20 area too and our car says 'you are over the speed limit' if we go 1mph over. I consider it a helpful reminder.

Fleetheart · 06/05/2025 21:21

it is annoying;’what I would do in your position is set your speed to 18mph in the 20 zone. irritating but you will be extra safe and hopefully not for too long. I love my Toyota but it sure does a lot of beeping for every occasion.
