To return a new Toyota car

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 20:26

We recently changed our 3 years Toyota Corolla for a new Toyota Corolla; through PCP lease, we paid 3,000 and are paying £350 per month.

As we knew the Corolla already we did not ask for test drive. Sale man did not mention any new feature.

The new car comes with an intelligent speed control system which beeps all the time when you go over the speed limit, we live in a 20 mile zone, so as soon as you go one mile over it starts beeping.

The system can be switched off by going through various menus; you have to do it every single journey as it rests when you turn the car off.

It is basically driving me crazy and we are seriously thinking in returning it and purchase our old car back. We have to pay another 2,000 to the lease losing 5k.

What would you do in this situation. We are assuming our car is available and they will se it to us for the price they told us before we signed new lease.

We have had the new car for nearly a week.

it is annoying;’what I would do in your position is set your speed to 18mph in the 20 zone. irritating but you will be extra safe and hopefully not for too long. I love my Toyota but it sure does a lot of beeping for every occasion.

Thanks. I guess I just need to get better with all this new technologies.

I’ve got a Skoda Enyaq which does the same thing. I solved it by not speeding, and yes I live in a 20mph zone. It’s really not difficult.

Itsjustgonenoonhalfpastmonsoon · 06/05/2025 21:27

I’ve never heard of this feature. It sounds a good idea but bleeping at just 1 mile over the limit is a bit much. What would happen in a 40 limit or on a motorway? Would it bleep at 71mph I wonder.

mummytoonetryingfortwo · 06/05/2025 21:28

YABU. We have the same feature. The way to stop is it to stick to the speed limit

Neodymium · 06/05/2025 21:28

if you are just asking mechanics and Toyota they will of course say you can’t turn it off. If you go to a private auto electrician they probably would be able to.

OnTheBoardwalk · 06/05/2025 21:30

There’s another thread about this

yes it’s a new feature that you have turn off every time which is really annoying

what's really annoying as you say is that it picks up side road mph. I keep getting shouted at by my mum when it picks up 20 mph limits on side roads she always, incorrectly, takes the cars side

Oh god there’s a feature in the new KIA Sportage that beeps and turns the wheel slightly whenever you cross the centre line (obviously you have to sometimes! Especially if avoiding parked cars on a narrow road) and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve nearly crashed. It also can only be switched off every single journey

Oh my god my Yaris does this and I HATE it!! It's so dangerous and has made me nearly crash more than once! 🤬

Mt563 · 06/05/2025 21:34

Set your speed limiter to 20 and switch it on in 20 zones.

HamieandHave · 06/05/2025 21:45

You asked this the other day. The answer is the same. You can’t return a brand new but depreciated car because your husband chose it without you and you don’t like it.

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 21:12

Should not the sale man mentioned this? We would have certainly kept the old one if we knew, until they perfect this system or decide that is actually not helping anything.

He's a sales man it is not his job to disclose all and everything, you opted out of a test drive and seemingly didn't read the spec and details for the new car thoroughly enough... this is on you OP

ItsStillWork · 06/05/2025 21:59

My car which is a 24 plate doesn’t do this thank god!

I think I would be tempted to sell it back to them.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 07/05/2025 07:26

To all those saying don’t speed - that’s great if the car gets the speed limit right all the time. It doesn’t!

Near me, coming out of a 30 zone into national speed limit the sign is obscured. You would have to spend a long time with the car beeping at you until another sign (no repeaters needed on national speed limit road).

That is just one example of many many places the car will get the speed limit wrong.

It might be a good system in theory but the tech isn’t there yet.

Weefreetiffany · 07/05/2025 07:28

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 20:44

Do you live on a 20 mile per hour zone?

I do! And the amount of people who think they’re above the law and speed disgusts me. Drive the limit, thats the limit fkr a reason and you’ll have no problem. I hope more cars get this feature! Excellent news!

babasaclover · 07/05/2025 07:34

Bananasandcarrots · 06/05/2025 20:57

Correct, I see if I go over and go back to the right one by looking at the speed on the scree; you don’t need a beeping sound; plus is not always accurate

I feel your pain.

I have a Lexus so same manufacturer. It is not always accurate eg there is a big main road in our town that is 30 - it is parallel to the school road which is 20 - the car always thinks it’s close enough that you should be doing 20. Really annoying.

the menu to turn it off is a joke so I don’t bother - I do loads of short runs so engine on and off all the time it just wouldn’t be worth it.

I turn the radio up to deal with it. I will say that you do jet used to it and just ignore - I’ve had the car 6 months now and genuinely don’t hear it - my husband does though when he takes my car and hates it 😂😂😂

it’s not about speeding it’s about the accuracy of it thinking you are!!!

Barney16 · 07/05/2025 07:37

Drive at 18 miles an hour and save the three grand.

Calmdownpeople · 07/05/2025 07:38

No. Some don’t allow you to turn it off. What a crazy reason to return a car. You have already posted about this and you want different answers which just aren’t there.

Every new car has safety requirements and it is like this for a reason.

It’s coming to all brands I’m afraid - some have just opted in quicker than others. It’s a European initiative for all cars sold in eu. I know technically cause of brexit we are not eu but I guess manufacturers are not going to make 2 versions just for uk.

cars such as Audi have a button you can touch to turn off but most like mine you have to go through several menus on the MMI and it’s a right faff

The OP already had a thread on this. Why start another?

Why would a salesman mention any features of you just go in and buy? Easy sale for him and he would assume you’d done all your research and that’s why you want to buy it?

The feature is dogshit but it’s not on the salesman I’m afraid

Mummybearsthename · 07/05/2025 07:46

We have the same car. I don't speed so it doesn't bother me...it's when the camera in the car doesn't pick up the new speed that it is irritating and distracting.

We live in a village and when pulling out onto the main road to leave the village, the speed limit is 50mph, but because there are some bushes blocking the cameras view of the speed sign, it doesn't see it so thinks I should still be doing 20mph and beeps until the next sign.

At first I found it really distracting and hated the feature, but I've got used to it and it's not so bad now. I wouldn't pay £7k to get rid of it!

I haven't worked out how to switch it off though which would be handy for those routes I know it'll beep when I'm not speeding. How do you do that please OP?

If you use your indicators, which you should anyway to indicate you’re moving out over the line, this won’t happen.

Don't speed, use indicators and for fuck sake don’t drive in the centre lane if the left hand lane is free. All points that people seem to have forgotten.

babasaclover · 07/05/2025 07:46

Jc2001 · 06/05/2025 21:17

Yes I think it is a regulatory thing that it can't be permanently disabled. I suspect it will be the same on any new car.

I'm sure you'll get used it it. Not sure it's worth ££££s to buy back an old car.

I have it on my car and it is annoying. For those saying stick to the speed limit, mine seems notoriously bad a recognising when you go into a new speed zone, especially if the road sign is dirty.

Edited

It’s not all done on road signs it’s gps data so it knows location ally you are in a speed zone. Unfortunately it’s not accurate I’ve found!!!
