To be annoyed at how bad our Eurovision song is?

AngeloMysterioso · 06/05/2025 15:11

We have any number of really talented songwriters, singers and musicians in the UK. And yet the best we could come up with is a few minutes of what I could only describe as sonic chaos with three girls yelling
what
the
hell
just
HAPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENED
over and over again.

It’s not even that it’s boring, or not fun or quirky enough. It’s actually annoying, and I find myself getting more and more irritated every time I hear it which thanks to Radio 2 playing it every hour or so is distressingly often.

How have we gone from the fab Sam Ryder to Olly Alexander cavorting in a dirty toilet and now this crap??

We should have opted out of Eurovision years ago. Or at least monetised it by having it on a commercial channel.

ExtraOnions · 06/05/2025 15:14

It’s awful .. worst one since Schooch.

It doesn’t build to anything, and has no impact, or any sort of a hook.

I watch every year, and every year I support the UK, but I just can’t do it this year, it’s so bad.

If we get any points at all I will be stunned….and before people start banging on about “political voting”, unless it’s just the UK that is badly effected, we use that at as excuse for poor song choices.

Bring back Sam Ryder !

spiderlight · 06/05/2025 15:17

You're spot on. Sam Ryder set a very high bar. I hadn't watched Eurovision for years but he drew me back in. Last year's song was nowhere near as good. This year's is just an abomination and I don't think I can bear to watch yet another year of nil points.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/05/2025 15:18

There are so many talented musicians in the UK. Ask any A&R person for 20 of them FFS. Someone could do this easily.

Needmorelego · 06/05/2025 15:20

We probably don't want the expense of hosting again so don't want the UK to win.
(It's why Ireland entered with My Lovely Horse sung by Fathers Ted and Dougal. They didn't want Ireland to win.....😁🐎)

TheShed7 · 06/05/2025 15:20

I really like the song. That's probably a bad sign mind you as I still don't understand what people liked about Arcade or that boring Portugal one that won.

They can sing though, they can harmonise and it's a really fun song, so that's good enough for me. They also appear to be fun people as well.

Charmeleon33 · 06/05/2025 15:22

I agreed, it’s awful, and also such a shame because Remember Monday can all actually sing quite well! 🙄

Secretly cheering for KAJ over here…

OxfordInkling · 06/05/2025 15:22

They can actually sing, and some parts of the song are good. but overall I agree - it’s not great.

in contrast I’m loving la poupee and laika party.

There are lots of talented musicians in the UK and a good 99% wouldn't touch Eurovision with a bargepole. For every Sam Ryder there are 20 artists whose career has fallen off a cliff following their performance (which in some cases wasn't even that bad). Mae Muller, Michael Rice anyone? No A&R Manager with sense would put their artists forward.

I hate the song but my mum likes it so there are fans out there 😁

Loving Kaj .. what a great song, dance & staging.

I’ve never quite got over Finland and Cha-Cha-Cha winning - that was the first time I every thought that it was fixed .. to get it to Sweden for the ABBA anniversary (and they didn’t show anyway !)

TempestTost · 06/05/2025 15:32

I find a lot of pop music now seems to go nowhere, and not have a hook. Even the Taylor Swift stuff.

It's kind of strange, surely that's the point of pop music? It's not like there is a lot of intellectual content or musical sophistication to balance it out.

It wouldn’t work on a channel with adverts, I don’t think- would that not mess up the international timing and have us out of sync with everyone else? While the UKIB channels are members of the EBU, it makes sense to air it on BBC as our biggest EBU member channel.

I don’t see why we should have opted out- it’s a great chance to see what kind of music is coming from the rest of Europe every year, to enjoy the good and have a bit of a laugh at the bad! Several musicians I discovered through Eurovision have gained a permanent place on my CD shelf, from Manëskin and Käärijä to Bambie Thug!

The rest of Europe have ad breaks, it helps change over for some of the bigger staging changes, and allows time for the awful skits by the hosts.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 06/05/2025 16:03

I was saying on another thread, they're a rip off The Last Dinner Party

Its difficult though because what are the Europeans looking for from us? 😄

I think someone like Ezra Collective would be quite good tbh, something completely different

It would put us more in synch with other channels as most of the other broadcasters have ad breaks.
It's insanely cheap for the BBC though, for what they get. The per hour cost is comparable to a cheap quiz show or a daytime format like Homes Under The Hammer, but for primetime entertainment.

lavenderlou · 06/05/2025 16:10

I wasn't keen the first time I heard it but I like it the more I listen to it. Not what you need for a one-time song contest entry though! I always think the successful songs are terrible though so I must not have a good Eurovision ear. They have wonderful singing voices and are approaching it all in a positive way so I hope they don't do too abysmally.

RaraRachael · 06/05/2025 16:22

It's just a mish mash without any structure. Just when you think it's going in one direction, it veers off into some other place.

Awful song. Normally a song grows on me the more I hear it but this one has the opposite effect.

Live KAJ and I can't stop singing it 😂

OneBadKitty · 06/05/2025 16:23

It's a bad song! Sounds like something from a third rate musical theatre show.

the80sweregreat · 06/05/2025 16:23

It’s awful.
Luckily once the competition is over we will never hear it ever again I’m sure.

Allseeingallknowing · 06/05/2025 16:25

OP- you summed it up perfectly!

MrsPlantagenet · 06/05/2025 16:25

I saw them on This Morning - what a bloody awful song! I was quite embarrassed for them. I know the songs are always dreadful (Sam Ryder excepted), but this was particularly heinous.

OneRareCritic · 06/05/2025 16:27

For as long as UK are one of the 5? Nations who fund the gig and get an automatic place in the final there are nations who refuse to vote for us. Sam Ryder was an exception. We need to either pull out all together including funding it, or just accept that we will never win again and watch it for the laughs.

I quite like it too. It sounds like a typical euro pop song to me.

Swiftie1878 · 06/05/2025 16:31

Worst entry EVER, I think!

the80sweregreat · 06/05/2025 16:31

I can’t see it getting more than a few points! The girls seem nice enough , but it’s just repetitive dirge.
