To be annoyed at how bad our Eurovision song is?

We have any number of really talented songwriters, singers and musicians in the UK. And yet the best we could come up with is a few minutes of what I could only describe as sonic chaos with three girls yelling
what
the
hell
just
HAPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENED
over and over again.

It’s not even that it’s boring, or not fun or quirky enough. It’s actually annoying, and I find myself getting more and more irritated every time I hear it which thanks to Radio 2 playing it every hour or so is distressingly often.

How have we gone from the fab Sam Ryder to Olly Alexander cavorting in a dirty toilet and now this crap??

2/3 of them are actually musical theatre professionals. I saw them in a West End concert in Cyprus last year. They are really talented! Particularly the red head (Lauren Byrne), she did a showstopping rendition of Defying Gravity.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the song and I don't think it showcases their ability, but wish 'em well.

SquashPenguin · 06/05/2025 16:34

It’s a screechy, try- hard mess of a song. Probably score points in the single figures (at a push).

GuineapigOlympics · 06/05/2025 16:35

I actually don't mind it that much but I agree "It doesn’t build to anything, and has no impact, or any sort of a hook" . I heard it over a shop radio and stopped to listen - so maybe it does have impact - but then it gets boring because it doesn't go anywhere.
But my favourites are Ireland and Sweden so I may not have much taste.

Dramatic · 06/05/2025 16:37

I quite like it, but then I wasn't a fan of Sam Ryder just shouting "spaceMAAAAYN" over and over again

Cloudyvibes · 06/05/2025 16:40

Just had to quickly YouTube it as I hadn’t heard it…and yes totally agree it’s awful.
I give it to the girls singing it they can sing but I felt like the video was 3 singers trying their best to outdo each other as the best vocalist 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also didn’t like the tattoo of the toilet at the beginning felt very tacky🤦🏼‍♀️

Newgirls · 06/05/2025 16:41

omg I genuinely like it! I think it’s catchy and fun. It’s about a mad night out which I like. I can imagine it being a party hit at Eurovision.

TheBerry · 06/05/2025 16:42

Sam Ryder was a freakish anomaly and we have been diabolical for years before and ever since.

I don’t know where we find these people. It makes no sense to me.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/05/2025 16:43

No idea what our song is. They’re usually a bit crap though so wouldn’t be surprised.

lavenderlou · 06/05/2025 16:49

There are more points awarded by the jury this year and the girls sing well and harmonise so they may pick up something that way. I expect nul points from the public.

I agree, if they wear really OTT gowns and wigs and have a great set it could be fun

Arancia · 06/05/2025 16:52

Hey, at least you guys always give the rest of Europe some entertainment with your terrible songs and all the nul points 😈. Thank you 😎

Laiste · 06/05/2025 16:52

Meh.
I'm not watching EV any more.

Sad 'cos I've watched it every year for years. Printed off score cards for us to fill, enjoyed the weird and wonderful and laughed at predictable political voting. Kids stay up late, bit of fun ...

Not any more thanks, last couple of years have been cringeingly awful. Not fit for young kids to watch and full of smutty innuendo.

I'll leave the fake cocks, endless drag queens and dirty loo's to those who enjoy all that.

Blondebrownorred · 06/05/2025 16:58

I love it. It's happy and bouncy and makes me smile

Holdonforsummer · 06/05/2025 16:59

I really like the song and find myself randomly signing/humming it all the time now. It’s supposed to be fun and it is! Good luck UK!

SwanOfThoseThings · 06/05/2025 17:07

Electronically mangled voices, no thanks.

Soukmyfalafel · 06/05/2025 17:09

I've given up on Eurovision. It's a bit frustrating when you can never get behind your own country's entry.

I did see on goggle box there was some man with his arse out with helpfully placed people/things covering his bits? Was that some weird fever dream?

Picklepower · 06/05/2025 17:11

I haven't even heard it yet but I'm pretty confident YANBU

Viviennemary · 06/05/2025 17:11

But it's nearly always dire. It's become a tradition.

Sassybooklover · 06/05/2025 17:14

I love Eurovision! Sam Ryder set a very high bar. Last year's entry was utterly dire, and considering a lot of Europe is quite conservative in their attitudes, it was never going to do well. I heard this year's entry briefly, and, it's unmemorable, and unlikely to be successful.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/05/2025 17:15

It’s awful .. worst one since Schooch.

I hate to admit it but I quite liked the Schooch entry song 🤦 IIRC it was full cheese on toast and I was surprised at the time that it didn't do better. Maybe that was when Eurovision was going through it's indie phase, can't remember.

This bunch are dreadful. I've seen them perform on telly a couple of times but never yet in tune. Maybe they're saving it for the night but I doubt it.

SparklyGlitterballs · 06/05/2025 17:17

Wouldn't matter how good our song is. Europe hates us and deliberately gives us the fewest marks possible (or typically nil points). The only time we scored well was a few years back when everyone was voting for Ukraine. None of them wanted the expense of hosting on Ukraine's behalf so they voted UK second. I don't bother watching any more.

RainbowConnection1 · 06/05/2025 17:19

When I hear it I can’t help think that it sounds like they’re either autotuned or synthesised in some way? There’s a weird echo to their voices. Plus the repeated ‘what the hell just happened?’ Get irritating.

Cherrytree86 · 06/05/2025 17:20

Sam Ryder wasn’t fab, he just belts it out

Rummly · 06/05/2025 17:21

Do any countries actually take the contest seriously though? Does any country think it matters?

It’s just musical Jeux sans frontieres.

MrsMurphyIWish · 06/05/2025 17:21

I’ve just watched it on YouTube because of this thread and it reminded me of a modern musical theatre song. In the last month I’ve watched “six” and “and Juliet” (I know that has actual pop songs but they’ve been cropped for comedy) and that song was akin to those productions.
