To be annoyed at how bad our Eurovision song is?

AngeloMysterioso · 06/05/2025 15:11

We have any number of really talented songwriters, singers and musicians in the UK. And yet the best we could come up with is a few minutes of what I could only describe as sonic chaos with three girls yelling
what
the
hell
just
HAPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENED
over and over again.

It’s not even that it’s boring, or not fun or quirky enough. It’s actually annoying, and I find myself getting more and more irritated every time I hear it which thanks to Radio 2 playing it every hour or so is distressingly often.

How have we gone from the fab Sam Ryder to Olly Alexander cavorting in a dirty toilet and now this crap??

OP posts:
RaraRachael · 06/05/2025 20:01

I have no recollection of last year's winner so it couldn't have been very good.
I liked Baby Lasagne. Silly but good and memorable

FamingolosForDays · 06/05/2025 20:08

I actually think it's better than last years tragedy, and the one after sam- which is saying ALOT 😅

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 06/05/2025 20:17

I'm another who really loves their voices and harmonies, but wish they'd had a great song to do them justice.

I don't buy the 'it's political; they hate us' excuses personally. To be honest, though, they may just hold us to a higher standard and be amazed that one of the two countries that greatly dominate international pop music can't do a lot better.

Incidentally, does anybody know how it works with 'The Big 5' and whether the group is now locked, or could any others pitch in and join, for a guaranteed entry?

I'm sure I read that the Big 5 contribution is only something like half a million, maybe a million each - hardly an amount that would trouble the budgets of the national broadcasters in most of the western European countries, surely?

ClearHoldBuild · 06/05/2025 20:23

You’ve just got to embrace the naffnes.

Zonder · 06/05/2025 20:26

I haven't heard it but can it be any worse than last year?

ThatsNotMyTeen · 06/05/2025 20:28

It is awful. Their voices are just wailing. I am over Eurovision. Lot of crap. I wont be watching at all

Simplynotsimple · 06/05/2025 20:34

I try every year not to completely shit on our entries even if I know from the off that it’s not going to impress Europe. Sam Ryder nailed it for many reasons, actual talent, great song, amazing stage presence and a personality that shined through. Very reminiscent of Alexander Rybak.

I thought Olly Alexander last year was a ‘grin and bear it’ moment (actually think he’s very talented but my goodness he was absolutely cringeworthy), but this is a real howler. I’d prefer another Scooch, at least they were having some fun with it. I really miss the campy fun instead of blatant spectrum of politics it’s all about these days.

It’s bad. Only my opinion but it’s one of the worst songs I think we’ve put forward. Its 2 minutes of rising screeching that we’ve be told is akin to a Queen song. Only if Freddie Mercury was performing with laryngitis whilst swiftly being kicked in the googlies every 15 seconds…

Rummly · 06/05/2025 20:45

Why don’t we put Harry Styles up? Or Adele? Or Ed Sheeran?

After all, there aren’t any global pop stars from anywhere else in Europe - maybe Ireland aside.

Even if they hate us and give us nothing everyone will be well entertained.

saying there aren't any global pop stars from anywhere else in Europe is a strong statement. Defo a lot more from the UK, but not any?

Why would Adele, Ed or Harry do it? There is nothing in it for them.

PuppyMonkey · 06/05/2025 21:49

I have to agree OP. And I’m usually the one sticking up for the UK, trying to see the best in even the most embarrassing entry. But this, it genuinely is about the most irritating song I’ve ever heard. Confused

Wow I need to hear it now!

That's so Anglo centric! There are plenty of pop stars on the continent where people can cope with songs not being in their own language.

For the glory! Surely any self-respecting pop minstrel would want to appear on the same bill as, say, Polish backing singers dressed as milkmaids?

The only French global pop star I can think of was Johnny Hallyday. If you count France, Belgium and Quebec as the globe.

The Germans had Nina and Kraftwerk, I suppose, and the Belgians had Plastic Bertrand and The Singing Nun.

And, sure, there’s been Nana Mouskouri, A-ha, and Julio Iglesias.

But I’m not seeing megastars…(except for ABBA).

Leaffilledlattice · 06/05/2025 21:58

I quite like it! Probably because I like musical theatre. Also, it sounds quite Eurovision-esque to me and I can imagine foreign language speakers being pleased by the quirky Englishness “sip my tea”. Having said which, I always seem to back the losers!

BlondiePortz · 06/05/2025 22:00

And this surprises you? When had it last been decent?

FilthyforFirth · 06/05/2025 22:04

I love it! They have really good voices and I think its fun which is what EV should be about! No ones votes/likes us anyway, so it doesn't hugely matter...

I guess you're looking at ones who had some success in the UK. Again that's really Anglo centric. There are plenty who have been big across different countries of Europe and on into other francophone or Spanish speaking countries for a start. Someone like Eros Ramazzotti has had hits across Europe for years but not in the UK.

OK. I was really thinking of acts that can command global tours or Vegas residencies - like Adele, The Rolling Stones, T-Swizzle and Lieutenant Pigeon.

I’m sure I’d enjoy Eros Ramazzotti. I’ll track him down on Spotify.

Zonder · 06/05/2025 22:42

I take your point @Rummly - but there's a lot of world out there that's not in Vegas! And global tours can miss out USA and UK just like many anglophone singers miss out other countries.

Hope you like Ramazzotti - he's pretty good IMHO.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/05/2025 22:51

I like it 🤷‍♀️ it’s catchy and about right for Eurovision.

It’s def better than last years song.

Letsummercommence · 06/05/2025 22:52

Maneskin Zitti e Buoni" in 2021 was the best song ever.
Camp, original and a great tune.
And even sung in Italian was sexy as..

Uk - dirge.

IdaPrentice · 06/05/2025 23:06

When Remember Monday were leaked as the UK act, it was mentioned that they're a country-pop act, and when the song was played I was a bit disappointed that it's not country after all. Not that I'm particularly a country fan, but that a really good country song in 3-part harmony could have caught the wave of country music's current surge in popularity, and sounded a bit different.

I don't hate the song, the hook is very memorable, but I don't think we'll win.

Sam Ryder Space Man was brilliant, a real stand out, both song and artist. Love him.

GraveAndQuiet · 06/05/2025 23:11

It's a fucking cacophony. Every few years/ decade, a song come out that I have to switch off of it comes on the radio. This song is one of them.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 06/05/2025 19:09

This! It's the "my lovely horse" strategy! Take this lump of sugar baby you know you want it 😂

But yes, it's crap, for several years now, except for Sam Ryder, we're always crap.

I actually think it might even be more subtle than that. Because they've chosen strong singers/performers who might cobble together enough jury votes, what they might be going for is a "respectable lower lefthand table" result.

Whenever we've sent a strong singer, we've hit the lefthand side of the table no problem - Jade Ewen, Molly Smitten-Downes etc.

There's no shame in a lefthand table result.
