To spend £1,900 on a rug?

Theyalwaysknewbest · 04/05/2025 21:33

I love it so much.
I've been looking at it for over 1 year and I love it as much now as I did when I first saw it.
I've spent a year looking at rugs and haven't found any I particularly like.
This one, I love!
It's 3 metres x 2 metres.
Am I mad to spend this on a rug?
It would fill the floor space in our lounge.
Would sit on top of a wooden floor.
For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.
We are going camping in England for our family summer holiday.
We are not well off! At all!
But I love this rug and there is an option to pay it off monthly at zero % interest.....
I feel like it's wrong to spend this much on a rug but equally I really wish to have it!!

I bought a huge expensive rug nearly 35 years ago. It’s followed me from house to house and now sits proudly in my sitting room. I’ve always loved it and it still looks great despite the efforts over the years of 3 children and several dogs and cats. However I’m not a slave to interior fashion trends.

Do you have pets and children?

If you have don't (the veteran of much blood, sick and tears).

This is exactly why you should buy an expensive good quality rug. After a series of cheap rugs that didn't fully recover from this sort of thing we treated ourselves to an oriental rug from the wonderful Jennings of Tewkesbury shop for £1700 and a very thick striped rug from JL. They are amazing, every spill wipes up easily, even the little puppy accidents we have a few of last year. It also never goes through the pile to the backing, so no stains at all. As your granny would say good quality is cheaper in the long run.

Zezet · 05/05/2025 07:33

You are not unreasonable to buy a rug. You are very unreasonable to buy one on credit.

EleanorReally · 05/05/2025 07:35

are you on commission for john lewis?

Hillarious · 05/05/2025 07:41

Spent around £600 on a traditional Indian wool rug from JL in the early 90s. Still going strong and looks as good as the day it was bought. The pattern masks any spills and has not been trashed by toddlers, teens or pets. We’re not precious about it and don’t need to be. It’s matched well with a variety of different coloured sofas. A sound investment, bought on a credit card (as any major purchase should be) and paid off immediately (as any credit card bill should be). If you can’t afford to buy the rug outright, you should focus on saving more before buying. Don’t be fixated on this one rug. There’ll be other good ones to choose from in three years’ time.

Why would you do that when she said she didn’t want to post a picture?

SanFairyAnnie · 05/05/2025 07:42

if you do decide to buy it make sure there are no clothes moths or carpet moths in your home. Bitter experience!

YDBear · 05/05/2025 07:43

If it will make you happy to have it, then buy it.
Of course I get the argument that other people/kids/animals might bugger it up, but as my DP just said, if you were not to buy stuff for fear of others messing it up, we would all live with second hand furniture on bare boards.
The fact is, after a year, this is not an impulse buy. You obviously really, really want it. It will make you happy. Do it.

JaninaDuszejko · 05/05/2025 07:49

If it's the one people have linked to it's beautiful. However my income is multiples of yours and I wouldn't buy it as a first choice despite easily being able to afford it. There are lots of reputable sellers of second hand rugs on ebay that sell beautiful rugs for a fraction of what your JL rug is selling for. They clean the rugs and clearly highlight any stains or worn sections. Better for the environment and better for your pocket as well to buy second hand. And the joy of woollen rugs is they remain beautiful as they are used and worn out over the years.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 05/05/2025 07:59

I second @JennyForeigner with John Pye. They have a lot of John Lewis stuff including rugs. Can’t imagine you’d pay more than 25% of the original cost on there.

I would personally be wary of wool rugs though. Mine transfers fibres (it’s cream so they’re noticeable on everything) which irritates me and I’d also be worried about moth infestations. My mum has suddenly gained one recently and can’t shift them.

The rug I’m considering for my dining room is a similar price to the one you want, OP. It’s more expensive than a carpet would be for the room but I’m not carpeting an original Georgian wooden floor so an expensive rug is going to have to be the solution whether it’s ’too expensive’ or not.

Precisely.
Thanks @76evie

“Neither a borrower nor a lender be”

Don’t get into debt to buy a rug.

If I was then I'd get the rug at a discount!😂

You can buy second hand rugs at really good prices.

Okthenguys · 05/05/2025 08:10

One of the reviews on JL said her husband bought it in the sale - OP, unless it is drastically reduced I don’t think you can afford it. If your income is £1500pm and it took you a year to save £500, you can’t afford to spend even £1000 on a rug. There are plenty of amazing pieces of furniture I drool over but know they’re out of my budget. Like most people I appreciate them and then look for things I can actually afford.

TubeScreamer · 05/05/2025 08:11

YANBU to want it
YABU to buy it on your income

HotCrossBunplease · 05/05/2025 08:13

This has probably been said already but a wool rug will get destroyed by moths. They are impossible to get rid of. I mean, if you want to spend 2 grand on insect picnic go ahead but it is literally throwing money in the bin.

EweSurname · 05/05/2025 08:13

How would you feel if it was sold out and they didn’t bring it back in stock?

GaspingGekko · 05/05/2025 08:16

Honestly, on you income I kind of think it would be crazy to consider buying it. However...

There was a coat I fell in love with 20 years ago. I think it would have been around £3000 (it was in Hong Kong). I would probably never have worn it - it was highly ornate and impractical. But I still occasionally think of it now. This thread has reminded me of it. If you think you'll look back in 5 years and kick yourself that it isn't on your living room floor then find a way to do it. Maybe wait till the next sales? See if it's on offer?

Thewholeplaceglitters · 05/05/2025 08:16

Theyalwaysknewbest · 04/05/2025 21:39

I have managed to save up £500 towards it.
I don't have much money left at the end of each month.
It's taken me a year to save £500.

Then no, I’m sorry but you can’t afford it at the moment.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/05/2025 08:19

Rugs are terrible trip hazards and if someone falls over the edging you'll feel awful and you;ll never get blood out of that rug

Has this put you off ? Wink

GotToWearShades · 05/05/2025 08:21

Boreded · 04/05/2025 23:20

But a boiler is a necessity.

The rug will probably last longer than a boiler and they probably do need a floor covering

Theyalwaysknewbest · 05/05/2025 08:24

EweSurname · 05/05/2025 08:13

How would you feel if it was sold out and they didn’t bring it back in stock?

Well that's an interesting question
Because it was out of stock in the size I need for a few months. I kept watching to see if the size I need would return, and signed up to get an email when it's back in stock.
As soon as I saw it's back in stock in the size I need, my heart leapt!

Nah not at that price, sorry.
What’s the cleaning situation? Damp
cloth only? Machine washable?
