To spend £1,900 on a rug?

I love it so much.
I've been looking at it for over 1 year and I love it as much now as I did when I first saw it.
I've spent a year looking at rugs and haven't found any I particularly like.
This one, I love!
It's 3 metres x 2 metres.
Am I mad to spend this on a rug?
It would fill the floor space in our lounge.
Would sit on top of a wooden floor.
For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.
We are going camping in England for our family summer holiday.
We are not well off! At all!
But I love this rug and there is an option to pay it off monthly at zero % interest.....
I feel like it's wrong to spend this much on a rug but equally I really wish to have it!!

Buy the rug. It will make you smile every day. Think of it as your next 10 Christmas and birthday presents all at once.

If it was a holiday then I’d say no way as it’s gone and forgotten in a few weeks, but this rug will bring you joy for many years. If it lasts 20 years then the joy it brings costs you just 26p a day.

One day (possibly soon) it will be discontinued. How gutted would you be then? Life is short. Buy the rug.

Heirlooms cost different amounts for each family. One man’s trash is another’s treasure. If it’s worth a lot to OP, chances are it will be looked after. Obviously a truly beautiful wool rug would be more like £10,000, but that’s not really in the budget is it? This is on my heirloom list: lukeirwin.com/products/spring-clouds-1

That is not an heirloom rug. Sorry.

See, this is what I want to do.
I'm looking at this as being a lifelong purchase.
I'm not going to get bored of it.
I'm 45 now, and I'm looking at having it for decades.
And there's no reason why a good quality wool rug shouldn't last decades.
I'm not seeing this as a purchase to have for 5 years then change it to a new style.

I think you should buy it. If an earlier poster has already guessed which it is, there are only 2 left in stock. This is my future heirloom rug: https://lukeirwin.com/products/spring-clouds-1
I have no idea if I will ever be able to afford it! You mentioned your take home salary, but not your partner’s, I suspect if you make some cuts in other areas, you will manage? How much do you spend on clothes, going out, takeaways?

Spring Clouds

Spring Clouds

The Spring Clouds rug forms part of the Fresco and Nimbus Collection. The piece is influenced by the distinctive differences in clouds seen per season. Colours are a spectrum of blues and off-whites. See this rug here.

I don't know...there's a LOT of very sensible, no fripperies types on MN.

I think everyone should have something they absolutely adore & that brings them joy, especially in your home where we all spend so much time.

A lot of family heirlooms were originally bought in department type stores! They were loved & cherished & handed down.i have some lovely things from my grandparents houses- they were not rich on either side. I have things like clocks, cabinets etc.

OP can you see anywhere you could make a one off sacrifice to get the rug?

Theyalwaysknewbest · 04/05/2025 21:39

I have managed to save up £500 towards it.
I don't have much money left at the end of each month.
It's taken me a year to save £500.

you simply cannot afford it.

I wouldn't spend that much, I'd rather go on holiday anyway. But if in 1 year you haven't even managed to save a third of the price, you just can't afford it.

daffodildreamers · 05/05/2025 11:19

Oh, and a huge wool rug will be great at insulating your living room. Think of the saving you’ll make on your heating bills, not to mention saving the environment! Okay, I’m clutching at straws now, but my advice remains the same. Buy the rug.

KilkennyCats · 05/05/2025 11:14

That is not an heirloom rug. Sorry.

It’s a future heirloom, obviously it would have to be passed down a few generations before it would be a genuine heirloom. Suspect your average Brit doesn’t inherit carpets from their family piles. Mores the pity.

daffodildreamers · 05/05/2025 11:23

A PP just said there might be only two left in stock so I’m updating my advice. Buy the rug. NOW

Well, I know what an heirloom is, I just can’t see that particular rug lasting several lifetimes.
Or several generations actually wanting it.

The average brit walks on their carpets, that's why. Heirloom carpets come from stately homes with rooms hardly used.

80smonster · 05/05/2025 11:25

Digdongdoo · 05/05/2025 11:10

Expensive does not equal valuable. Nor can you assume the next generation will want it, if it survives that long in the first place.
Second hand is far more environmentally and financially sound.

As I’ve already said, I’m huge fan of second hand. I don’t like newly made furniture, unless very expensive, because it’s usually very poorly constructed/made. However if there is an item you particularly treasure or love, I think you should have it, because if I spend for example 8k on sofas, you can bet that I’m going to look after them. Because I treasure them.

pambeesleyhalpert · 05/05/2025 11:29

I was going to say go for it but I just don’t think you can afford it? But you don’t seem to want those replies so… go for it and enjoy it!

Perhaps the posters with pots of cash could do the OP a favour and buy the two remaining rugs in stock and solve her dilemma over whether to buy one or not.

Syuni · 05/05/2025 11:36

Do you have a partner that also brings in money? Or is the £1500 your total household monthly income? How many kids do you have to feed and clothe?

KilkennyCats · 05/05/2025 11:24

For £1,900 if it gets passed to OP’s kids when they go to university or leave home, it will have done its tour of duty.

That is not an heirloom rug. Sorry.

Does it make you feel superior to be so nit picky?

At nearly 10k for the large size, I would leave a note to its worth for my family.

@80smonster Agree, it is a lovely rug.

queenofthesuburbs · 05/05/2025 11:50

which rug is it?

Ryeman · 05/05/2025 11:51

It’s a lot, but then when you move you can take it with you. Unlike a carpet.

Yes I found the italics a bit patronising and unnecessary. I assumed they were talking about the JL rug, either way it doesn’t matter. I didn’t come onto this thread for @KilkennyCats interior style and trends advice - which is actually an area I specialise in.

It is isn’t it. I love the entire Luke Irwin clouds collection and regularly check ebay to see if someone is clearing out their Chelsea townhouse and selling one on. I live in hope @PiggyPigalle.

PiggyPigalle · 05/05/2025 12:05

queenofthesuburbs · 05/05/2025 11:50

which rug is it?

OP's is the John Lewis one, link on first page.
I was referring to the Luke Irwin 10k rug not being of heritage standard, apparently!

longtompot · 05/05/2025 12:13

@Theyalwaysknewbest If it is the pale blue rug that someone posted the link for then it is beautiful and I would buy it if I could afford it.
As you say, it will last. It's handmade and looks good quality and the reviews say as much. The fact you still love it a year on says to me you won't grow bored of it any time soon.
Do you have a birthday coming up? Could you ask for John Lewis vouchers from anyone who usually buys you a present. I would also start to save towards it. If you had started putting away money when you saw it last year you might have had enough to buy it now, though that would have been nearly £160 a month.
I did a Google lens search on the image and there is an importer who has it but I have no idea how easy that would be to do or how expensive it would be, and also if it's the exact same colour rug as it looks darker in their photo. If you can see the rug in person, you might be able to see any info on the label on the back of the rug. Who knows, might be imported by the same people!

Lnew · 05/05/2025 12:14

I’m sorry, but no I wouldn’t. You’ve been wanting it for a long time and I wonder whether the anticipation is going to mean that the reality of having it is actually doing to be a let down.

Rugs can easily be damaged. A bit of dogshit on someone’s shoe - can happen even in a shoes off house with visitors etc. Wool rugs can shed fibres as well. Any number of things could either make the rug less than brilliant.

I would only say get it if you had the £1900 sloshing around and it was peanuts to you. But it isn’t.

Bestfadeplans · 05/05/2025 12:19

There's no way I'd be spending more on a rug than a family holiday and more than my monthly wage. But you do you.

Bestfadeplans · 05/05/2025 12:20

Ryeman · 05/05/2025 11:51

Plenty of people take carpets with them
