Speed warning system intelligence driving me crazy

Bananasandcarrots · 04/05/2025 17:38

Has anyone bought a new car recently? The speed warning system sound every time we go a bit over 20 miles an hour is driving me crazy.

Haven’t figure it out how to switch off, but apparently we have to do it every time we get on the car.

Anyone else with similar experience?

I drive a Honda that makes a pinging noise when I reach 30 mph. It doesn't bother me so I've not looked into how to turn it off.

toomuchfaff · 04/05/2025 17:43

Haven’t figure it out how to switch off,

Owners manual....

Tryingtokeepgoing · 04/05/2025 17:45

If it goes off whenever you drive over 20 miles an hour it’s broken!! If it goes when you over 20 in a 20 limit then you’ve got two options. They are to stick to the limit, which would be sensible, or turn the warning off, which might be more practical.

EU legislation, which we mirror, means that the system has to be active when the car is started and cannot be permanently deactivated. Though I expect someone somewhere can hack and deactivate it, breaching your warranty in the process. Turning it off in my car is easy though; one press of a button on the steering wheel. Or just say “hey BMW, turn off speed limit warnings”

Strumpetpumpet · 04/05/2025 17:45

Ours has a button on the steering wheel. You have to switch it off each journey, you can’t permanently disable it, but it’s very easy to do

Bananasandcarrots · 04/05/2025 17:53

Thank you; we have been looking at the manual, online, etc. Still can’t find it.

Yes, we live in a 20 miles an hour zone which is quite easy to go over, just one or 2 miles more and start beeping, if anything I find it distracting and stressful.

Went to dealer today, they said to look at settings; you have to do it every time you start the car apparently,

Will probably ended returning car and getting an old one, and loose money, but don’t think I can’t live with it.

It’s a curse of many modern devices. They’re always beeping, buzzing, moralising, and trying to sell you stuff.

Will look at it, that will be easier than going through settings all the time 😅

Totally agree

What car is it? On my volvo you press the left arrow button on the left hand side of the steering wheel and it switches it off.

It annoyed me at first to have to do it each time but I do it on auto pilot now.

Why on earth can't you just stick to the speed limit,
or do you just pick and choose which laws you break?

Bit harsh. It beeps if you literally go 1 mile over the speed limit in our Kia. I’m sure most people do that every time they drive from time to time. It’s easily done. It drives me crazy.

DeedlessIndeed · 04/05/2025 18:07

We just bought a new hyundai tuscon and had the same issue.

Luckily found there is a shortcut on the steering wheel to turn it off. Thank God.- was driving me mad!!

Loveduppenguin · 04/05/2025 18:09

What car is it @Bananasandcarrots? my DP bought a new car and his is the same, it’s literally one button to press on his right hand side. Took him ages to figure out

It's not perfect technology - if you drive past an exit on the motorway it'll think the speed limit is lower e.g
30/40 and ping like mad that you're doing 68mph

Ilovemyshed · 04/05/2025 18:10

Just google it. There will be an owners chat forum with a solution.

It doesn't always pick up the right speed limit. For example there's a long section of A road near me which was 40mph for a while for road works but is now back to 60mph. It beeps constantly for miles as a result if you don't switch it off.

There's also another stretch which has been back to 30 for about 6 months but was 10mph for a while while a bridge was being replaced. Again random beeping every time you go through.

Also it doesn't recognise for about 10 seconds when you move out of a 30 into a 40 or 40/60. More beeping when I'm driving perfectly legally.

I'm capable of keeping my speed under the limit without the random beeps when it gets confused

Plus if it goes by the speedo number, it thinks you're doing 71 mph when you're likely only doing 67.

One or two miles over in a 20 mph zone hardly registers as an issue. The people who cause accidents and kill people are the ones who ignore speed limits entirely. There are still people who do 50,60,70 mph in 30 mph zones

Bananasandcarrots · 04/05/2025 18:15

We found; it is not one bottom to press. You have to go through settings and various menus, the menu stays on display until you switch the car off and then have to select again.

No ideal really

Is the speed limit 20mph everywhere you drive then? Because that's when she said it goes off, not when shes breaking the speed limit

Is it an Audi OP? We had a hire car that did this once. Drove me up the wall along with some weird feature that randomly pulled the steering wheel!

Loveduppenguin · 04/05/2025 18:16

Edited

Surely it's just as easy to stick to the speed limit? Isn't part of safe driving/ driving with due care and attention being aware of the prevailing limit AND your speed?

And if you are do unaware, the beep.is obviously needed

Ha! I've got a new Audi and these 'features' drive me up the wall as well

TeenLifeMum · 04/05/2025 18:26

My car hasn’t realised they’ve changed the A303 so wants me to go 50 in what’s now 70mph and get cross I’m not in the lane and rather in a field (it’s the new road where the podimore round about used to be; I definitely wasn’t driving in a field.)

OnTheBoardwalk · 04/05/2025 18:27

And it picks up 20 mph limits of side roads when you are on a main road and incorrectly goes off on one.

i got told off my by mum when it incorrectly started beeping. She took the cars side even though she knew it was 30mph where we were driving
