Speed warning system intelligence driving me crazy

Bananasandcarrots · 04/05/2025 17:38

Has anyone bought a new car recently? The speed warning system sound every time we go a bit over 20 miles an hour is driving me crazy.

Haven’t figure it out how to switch off, but apparently we have to do it every time we get on the car.

Anyone else with similar experience?

One or two miles over in a 20 mph zone hardly registers as an issue. The people who cause accidents and kill people are the ones who ignore speed limits entirely. There are still people who do 50,60,70 mph in 30 mph zones

I had to do a speed awareness course for doing 33 in a 30.

RustyBear · 04/05/2025 18:33

Our local Tesco has a 15mph limit sign on the road out of the car park, but there’s no sign when you get on to the proper road, which is 30. So it beeps at me until some random point near the next roundabout - not sure what’s making it change, as there’s no road sign there.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2025 18:33

On my car (volvo xc40) there is a little left facing arrow on the left hand side of my steering wheel and I have to press it to turn off the warning on each car journey.

I have to turn it off as there are sections of the road that it thinks has a lower speed limit than the actual limit on the signs e.g. there's a section that goes past an industrial estate with a 5mph limit within so it then thinks the main road outside also has a 5mph limit when its actually 30mph. There are various other areas with a similar issue.

Sayithowiseeit · 04/05/2025 18:35

It's really annoying, especially as the speed signs round here are faded or overgrown with hedge so it hasn't noticed I've gone in to a national so it flashes 30 at me in a 60. I managed to turn the voice off because she was so patronising

BeyondMyWits · 04/05/2025 18:45

My husband got so annoyed by it that he actually slowed down - we live in a newly created 20 zone. I quite like it (as a "back seat driver"). Sometimes it is annoying if it picks up the side-road limit, but the tech is getting better.

Is the speed limit 20mph everywhere you drive then? Because that's when she said it goes off, not when shes breaking the speed limit

Is it an Audi OP? We had a hire car that did this once. Drove me up the wall along with some weird feature that randomly pulled the steering wheel!

That feature that drags the steering wheel drives me mad too. It's supposed to keep you in your lane if you fall asleep on the motorway, but it seems to be activated over about 35 mph. Overtaking parked cars, I don't want to indicate right, because I don't want other drivers to think I'm indicating to turn right. It yanks the steering wheel to the left and I have to wrestle it back to avoid hitting said parked cars.

Automatic braking, too - again when overtaking a parked (or moving) car, I judge that I have plenty of time/room to overtake and pull back in before oncoming traffic reaches me. The car, however, senses a head-on collision coming, and slams the brakes on. That means now I don't have time to overtake and pull back in, and the collision is much more likely. I swear the car is trying to kill me. Maybe it's depressed and suicidal.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2025 19:36

Mine sometimes puts the brakes on when I'm reversing into the drive as it's sure I'm going to hit the tree at the side...I'm Not!!

AndSoFinally · 04/05/2025 20:19

Mine is at the end of a seemingly endless settings menu. But you can turn the volume down on it easily and then you can't really hear it over the radio so I just leave it on

Ds2 has a car with the lane correction feature. He hates it and turns it off everytime he drives.

Bananasandcarrots · 04/05/2025 20:58

It is extremely annoying; I feel like selling it and getting an older version

Similar here, perhaps we can turn volume down

I think that’s appropriate, you were obviously trying to keep to the limit but didn’t check the speedometer. Some refresher training and maybe some ideas on how to manage the speed is fair enough for your transgression.

someone doing 50 in a 30 can’t be educated

Chiseltip · 06/05/2025 11:56

What car is this OP?

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 06/05/2025 11:59

Guarantee there's a YouTube video for virtually every make/model of car to switch this off.

You probably could have found it in the time it took to type your post

Ethosuximibe · 06/05/2025 12:02

My car thinks a local 30 is a 20 for some reason and the school road is 5 instead of 20 (because there’s a sign for 5mph on the side road going into school), so beeps incessantly as you go down these, it’s so annoying! It does go off after about a minute though.

Dbank · 06/05/2025 12:02

What make of car and model is it?

And yet the 20mph limits in Wales have saved lives. Measurably.
It’s madness that @Bananasandcarrots is thinking of changing cars and losing money in order to be able to break a law she dislikes often enough that it’s irritating.

Does it come out of a special speaker?

SoftPillow · 06/05/2025 12:40

Ours has to be deactivated at the start of each journey. I wouldn’t mind an accurate beep, totally reasonable and a useful reminder to slow down. But most of the beeps are for the wrong speed limit, as many have described above. That’s infuriating.

AlwaysFreezing · 06/05/2025 12:48

I hired a car last weekend that had this and the lane correction thing. Bloody annoying. I'd hate to buy a car and realise afterwards it had these features, unless you can turn them off properly.

mumda · 06/05/2025 15:43

What sort have you got?
Do they all have it now?

You are a bit behind or you are wilfully ignoring the other commenters who have clearly explained that the system is not accurate and registers the wrong speed limit so pings off for whole stretches of road where the drivers not speeding

Pericombobulations · 06/05/2025 16:32

My car has all these features and is driving me crazy.

the speed detection is fine until going home it thinks I’m in the 20 further up the road that I just turned off before and complains that I’m doing 30.

the collision detection has now braked me twice on my driveway for no reason and has done twice on clear roads with nothing in front of me.

It also beeps when I get no where near a small bush or a person walking on the pavement a distance away from me.

it’s definitely out to finish me off

GasPanic · 06/05/2025 16:39

If there is a solution you can pretty much bet you will find it by googling.

Where you won't find it is on here. Especially if you don't post the type of car. As no one will have a clue as every car is different.
