New councillor wants to stop 'free mixing' between men and women

SeaSwim5 · 04/05/2025 10:14

Independent candidate Maheen Kamran has been elected in Burnley.

As well as support for Gaza, her manifesto included a pledge to encourage public spaces to end free mixing of men and women.

"Muslim women aren't really comfortable being involved with Muslim men. I'm sure we can have segregated areas, segregated gyms."

Is this a sensible approach and important for inclusivity? It's notable that many anti-Trans activists advocate the importance of single-sex spaces.

However, some have raised concerns about the growing sectarian nature of UK politics.

Should we be looking to reduce 'free mixing' between men and women and create more single sex spaces?

@cardibach

Surely if there is such a threat from men, reducing free mixing and offering more single sex spaces is a good protective measure?

Absolutely. The threat from men could be all but eradicated if they were never allowed near women at all in any circumstance. Seperate trains, workplaces, leisure activities, a curfew to keep them off the streets during 'women's hours'. This still leaves the domestic abuser. But we could manage that by restructuring family life so women lived together in one house, men in another. However, while I expect to some women this would seem Utopian, many wouldn't want this. They want to associate with men at work, leisure and home. So, what we do, is we do risk assessments and mitigate in areas where the risk is highest. Places where women are particularly vulnerable are designated single sex. Others places are not. This is not a new thing.

Most people on MN want single sex spaces only if it’s for anti-trans reasons but not if it’s for religious reasons

That's not true. I have voiced my support on a number of occasions for there to be women-only toilets and changing rooms in order that people can have sex-segregated spaces for religious or cultural reasons.

No. Because it’s about privacy and dignity not ‘safety’. You know this.

The places where women and girls are most vulnerable is at home. Everyone knows this.

Is there an argument that areas with high religious populations should be offering non free mixing options to be more inclusive?

Should council leisure centres have alternating days for each gender? Private businesses like cafes could also offer designated slots for men and women.

So a couple would takes turns to go into the cafe! Can we not say that this is against our culture, it seems to work a lot?

Rotherham is just one of many, many examples of how racism has been weaponised. The fear of being branded a racist is so powerful that it has successfully silenced virtually everyone for years now, including those who we have entrusted to protect us, dispense justice, lead the country etc. It will be fascinating to look back on historically, less enjoyable to live through.

Western societies have evolved over thousands of years to be "high trust" societies, from many generations of high values, excellent law and order, strong communities, etc we were able to enjoy as a nation lives where you could count on the vast majority of people to do the right thing.. that was the norm. But as we've seen across the western world, all that is thrown into chaos when you suddenly get a big influx of people from low trust societies, from countries where its more 'dog eat dog'. It's all been a big social experiment and it's been a dismal failure, and one that can't really be remedied at this point.

Why is it middle class white women who get to define what “privacy” and “dignity” requires. ?Privacy for a Muslim woman might look different

I’m not trying to define it. Not sure what you mean.

you are though. you keep insisting it’s obvious that single sex facilities are only required in certain settings and not others for reasons of privacy and dignity.

CarrieLite · 04/05/2025 17:31

I agreed with you until this, "anti-Trans activists". FFS OP! Do you really think women wanting a private space away from men to get changed is the exact same as some extremist wanting public spaces to be segregated? Really? 🙄Hmm

I haven’t specified the settings.
However, as a nation we have worked through experience to identify ones wishing work well for out society. If other women want to create other ones, fair enough. It’s not an argument for segregating everything for everyone, as you know. I think I’ve argued with you on here before and my experience was you weren’t able to accept facts or to consider the views of others, so I probably won’t respond to you again here.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 04/05/2025 17:34

If people want to create single sex spaces because of their faith, they should be free to do so. As private businesses. So single sex gyms, single sex meeting rooms etc.

What I would not accept would be forcing that on an entire area and making it apply to people who are not part of that faith.

No, she doesn’t. And neither does @Lostcat
But they’ll pretend they do to make a bogus argument for trans women to be allowed into women only spaces

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 04/05/2025 17:36

SeaSwim5 · 04/05/2025 10:30

Should we be moving to a position where council facilities like gyms, libraries and theatres are single sex spaces or offer single sex sessions?

Presumably this would be supported by those who want such spaces for religious reasons but also by people who oppose trans women accessing women's spaces.

I mean, we already are in that position slightly? A lot of council run gyms offer women only swimming or gym sessions. Why not? There is a demand for them. Some gyms like to play pretend though. They might offer a women only swimming session, but it’s at 9 o’clock at night, don’t get many bookings (gee, I wonder why) , and then use this as an excuse to say there’s no demand for it.

Ah ok so you agree with the councillor then?

I enjoyed the ad hominem dig. by “facts” presumably you mean a load of anti trans bollocks made up by people who want to make going out in public impossible for trans people.

Not sure what you are struggling to understand?

What on earth you are talking about.
For clarity, the facts you were unwilling to accept last time we met were the actual quoted statements from the SC decision on what sex meant.
Not anti trans bollocks. Nothing that would stop trans people going out in public.
And I’m not sure about what you mean about agreeing with the councillor. I’ve said clearly that I don’t think most areas should be segregated.
As I suspected, your posts are in bad faith and aimed to make me look bad by lying and misrepresenting what I’ve said. I’m not going to facilitate that so whatever incendiary bollocks you post about me next will be ignored.

It really is. ‘I really just can’t understand why you would want sex segregation in a swimming pool changing room but not in a library? They’re absolutely the same. Gee you must be anti-trans.’ Troll or stupid.

Trans people currently have the same rights as everyone else FYI.

MaggieMistletoe · 04/05/2025 17:45

Usual plethora of anti-English comments I see. I am sick to death of being told my ancestors were colonisers and oppressors. My ancestors were, along with most of the country, dirt poor farm labourers just scraping by. They oppressed no one, they were just trying to bloody survive. My ancestry is almost entirely welsh and scottish but I shall continue to vehemently defend my small proportion of English ancestry because I think it is patently wrong the way the English are supposed to ashamed of their heritage.

LadyRoughDiamond · 04/05/2025 17:46

Maheen Kamran is approx 495 years late to the party on this one as the official separation of church and state was begun in 1530 under Henry VIII (you can guess why). Since then, all UK legislation is secular regardless of the needs or wants of any particular religion. It would take a huge overhaul of our constitution to change this, especially in publicly funded spaces, regardless of how comfortable people felt.
