Second time now I’ve sat down to have drinks with a friend only to be met with “I don’t agree with Farage, but…”

Cue a rant about Muslims, immigrants, how the country is not what they remember in the good old days.

More and more people are starting to spout this drivel about immigrants. Yesterday it was literally ‘I’m not racist, I have asian family, but’ and then cue racist rant.

I feel like the country I love that used to be fair and tolerant has gone to shit.

Anti uncontrolled immigration doesn't equal racist.

However the problem is that all racists are anti uncontrolled immigration therefore there is no nuance to the discussion. It's like everything nowadays - you're lumped by others into being right wing or left wing if you voice an opinion which they don't agree with. George Bush has a lot to answer for when he said "You're either with us or against us". That along with social media has killed off proper debate.

You seem to do a lot of presuming. More lazy othering; the very thing you accuse others of. When are you going to show this great academic display of knowledge, because all I'm seeing is diatribe..and an unoriginal one at that.

The way things are going it feels like some sort of "civil war" is brewing which a Professor at King's College thinks is a likely outcome in the next 5 years. Sadly I think he may well be right.

Why was immigration not such a big issue when numbers were net 50k a year, right up until slimy Blair came to power. he opened the floodgates to Europe and Tories decided why stop there, why not just have open borders for anyone from anywhere in the world. Borders, schmoders!!!!

Now net immigration is running at nearly 1 million a year. And it’s making the country poorer. The numbers say so. Why is it such a surprise that people don’t like it. You’d have to be a special kind of idiot to want to continue doing something that harms you.

I know, I live in London after all and a lot of places here remind movies about Arabic countries, and not in a pleasant way.
I don't know why some choose to ignore the facts.

I never offered you an academic display. I simply pointed out that you are unwilling to consider educating yourself about the real reasons our country is in dire straits, rather than simply blaming refugees because the tabloids tell you to, or you don't like foreigners, or you think they're all staying in luxury, or whatever reason. You didn't really explain your point of view so nobody can tell.

God this thread is unpleasant. There will never be progress if people are so vile to the people they disagree with.

The pack mentality always shows its ugly face on these posts. It's as predictable as the bot/troll accusations. The lengths some go to when they don't get their own way.

You've learned a lot about my political stance it seems. I don't want people in my life who post stuff like that on social media and visibly align themselves with political groups endorsing those views. I make no apology for that.

It is isn't it. It's going to be a long hot summer - hopefully peaceful but it does feel , god forbid , another atrocity like Southport or Manchester happened then some parts of the country would explode. Farage et al need to be mindful of the tinderbox they are campaigning on. They are part of the problem not part of the solution.
