Homemade pizza is not healthy, we’re having a proper dinner.

Dc playing with a neighbour friend, I asked if they wanted to help make homemade pizzas and stay for dinner and to check with the mum.
He came back and said that he wasn’t allowed, my Dc asked ‘Aww, why not?’ and he said that his mum said it wasn’t healthy and that she’d make a proper dinner.

We do this sometimes on Friday/Saturday, Dc enjoy the activity and choosing toppings-passata, mozzarella, mushrooms, peppers, spinach and so on to make funny pizza faces, is this massively unhealthy?!

nope, OP is talking about home made pizza. That means you choose the amount of bread, veg, cheese and sauce

home made pizza is one of the healthiest meals you can make

moto748e · 03/05/2025 18:57

Just this sec got this out of the oven. I make em all the time.

Homemade pizza is not healthy, we’re having a proper dinner.

But what difference does it make what building pizza specifically is made in?! Even takeaways make them fresh….if you’re there in the shop it’s made in front of you.

I don't know, I'm not in that mum's head.

On the balance of probability, I would assume homemade would have less cheese and more veggies (ours definitely are).
It's also a good experience for the kids to make them so would be a plus in my book.

minnienono · 03/05/2025 18:58

It’s neutral, either healthy nor unhealthy because it depends on toppings and whether it’s served with veg! So a wholemeal based pizza with tomato, a modest amount of cheese and lots of veggies as toppings with leftover chicken (no processed meat) and a proper side salad is healthy, white base, tons of cheese and pepperoni, no salad not so much

What led to you measuring or estimating the calories?

And what is your problem with calories?

i track my calories on a daily basis using, like others, mfp. being 4'10" this helps me not turn into a human beachball as weight is very easy to gain when you live quite a sedentary lifestyle and are incredibly short.
i dont have a problem with calories at all, just saying op asked if it was homemade pizza was 'healthy'. as i said it can sometimes not be if people where to eat homemade pizza that dense in calories, and its not hugely nutritionally balanced that would not be healthy.

Pizza is a high proportion of carbs compared to protein and vegetables - higher than most other dinners. Some people might say cheese is unhealthy in the amount on pizza.

So is pasta pesto, or pilaf rice, or a sandwich, or a million other things people eat regularly

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 03/05/2025 19:02

Pizza is a snack. A slice for lunch is good.
My Italian rellies would not consider it a proper meal.

Well, I disagree. And I make homemade pizza all the times, with different type of base etc so I do know what goes into them.
I particularly know that you can't fit a reasonable portion of veg on a thin dough without it going completely soggy.

But again, I have nothing against pizza and my kids had it for dinner tonight, with a side of broccoli. I just don't see the point in kidding myself thinking it's "healthy".

BigHeadBertha · 03/05/2025 19:02

Wow. That wasn't very nice, was it. Inviting another child to join in some special fun at your house only to get a snobby response about how your offering isn't worthy. She sounds like a barrel of laughs! (Too bad the laughs will all be at her instead of with her hahaha).

But then, the mother wasn't the one who replied. Especially if you don't know the other mother well, there's really no telling what's behind it. Just a few examples:

It could be that her dietary preferences really are that extreme, that only the very healthiest foods are ever allowed, with no white flour, can or jar sauce, or etc.

Or the kid may have confused the message with that not even being exactly what she said.

For ex, she could have been trying to soften the blow of a "no" by giving her kid a reason why it wasn't as good as her child thought it would be anyway. Which could be for many reasons: they were having company for dinner, she didn't know you well enough to want her child over there even longer, her house is a disaster and she wouldn't be able to return the favor, she felt jealous when hearing the excitement in her child's voice, her child has an undisclosed illness that requires a special diet, ad infinitum.

Heck, I'm a full grown adult and I'd zoom straight over there for homemade pizza. :)

If you get more info., please share. It is kind of weirdly interesting.

Also depends what goes with it? I had a 480calorie pizza last night, sour dough base not too much cheese. Served with a huge salad, leaves, carrot, tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot, sweetcorn red pepper. Pretty balanced meal came in around 700calories according to my fitness pal

So does calorie count define if something is “healthy”?

no wonder the diet and health industry make so much money 🙄

Neighbour has insecurities surrounding food and their body imagery, which they are now sadly projecting onto their child. Hopefully the school will pick up on this before it caused any future harm to the child. I wouldn't give it anymore energy, OP. Neighbour is probably gagging for a pizza, but issues are making them anal.

What a load of bollocks.

Whodathoughtit2 · 03/05/2025 19:07

They're 7. He's gone home and said pizza. Not homecooked pizza with a variety of veg toppings. Plus when I say 'proper dinner' I mean that I've planned and put thought into it and want us to eat together/the same thing as a family i.e. a nice dinner for the weekend rather than the usual get through the week fare. So she probably meant 'no, I have other plans for us' rather than 'no, I don't want you eating that shite'

Oh come on now 😂

Home made pizza is lovely and there’s nothing wrong with it at all, but it’s absolutely not “one of the healthiest meals you can make”.

notadrift · 03/05/2025 19:09

It is the bank holiday weekend and she would have had her own plans.

Home made pizza is ok. Just cheese and tomato on toast really. Few veggies.

I am sure she wasnt being rude. You thought it was a great idea, she didnt.

you do realise that a healthy diet is not one meal.

pizza may not be “balanced” in that it contains your daily allowance of all your macro and micro nutrients. But that can be addressed in other meals. Have your “reasonable portion” of veg at lunch, or as snacks.

as part of a balanced diet it’s completely fine and not unhealthy at all.

what is unhealthy is deciding the value of one meal individually, rather than looking at diet as a whole.

does she now 😂

LaurieFairyCake · 03/05/2025 19:17

spidersareshitheads

yes it is. No UPF’s. Only food that looks like ingredients:

flour, water, yeast
tomato base
roasted vegetables
cheese

a perfect balance of carbs, fibrous vegetables and fat.

No, she bought the base in a roll!! It’s like me saying I make homemade bolognese because I cook pasta and open a bottle of dolmio. It’s no different to a takeaway (although a takeaway is probably better as it’s usually a freshly made sourdough base), or shop bought.

Personally I’m not fussed either way, but buying shop bought dough in a roll and putting cheese and various other things on the top is in no way one of the healthiest meals you can make!!!

LaurieFairyCake · 03/05/2025 19:28

Nope, the OP made it from scratch. She didn’t even know the roll existed - read her posts.

BobbyBiscuits · 03/05/2025 19:29

How rude and it's not true. If you did homemade pizza it'd be healthier than store bought or restaurant. And ideally maybe serve with salad or some kind of veg it's a perfectly decent meal.

What kind of example is that to set to tour children? Being derogatory and judgemental when someone suggests or offers something with good intentions?
Some people...

No 🙄the calorie count was to highlight its wasn't excessive and to show the proportion that was veg/salad. ie pizza can be part of a balance meal.

You can put as much salad as you like with a 1500calorie pizza and it won't be healthy and balanced.

Also I would not consider low calorie fat free with sweetener healthy it's not all about calories.

I'm no saint I'm sat here now scoffing half an easter egg 😆 the chocolate I'm eating will give me as many calories as the pizza, I know what will fill me more. Hence I don't scoff one every night. It's about making informed choices

TisILeClair · 03/05/2025 19:36

Lots of flour (so bread of any type) can be deemed unhealthy, so maybe it’s that.

After all, flour/bread is what one uses to feed poor people, while the toffs eat meat and veg…
