Homemade pizza is not healthy, we’re having a proper dinner.

Dc playing with a neighbour friend, I asked if they wanted to help make homemade pizzas and stay for dinner and to check with the mum.
He came back and said that he wasn’t allowed, my Dc asked ‘Aww, why not?’ and he said that his mum said it wasn’t healthy and that she’d make a proper dinner.

We do this sometimes on Friday/Saturday, Dc enjoy the activity and choosing toppings-passata, mozzarella, mushrooms, peppers, spinach and so on to make funny pizza faces, is this massively unhealthy?!

It’s completely healthy

its bread, cheese, vegetables

whenever anyone posts about pizza on Mumsnet you always get some lunatic saying pizza isn’t healthy.

not just one. A whole thread full of posters and their “unhealthy pizza”. Even the home made ones.

MintTwirl · 03/05/2025 18:41

We have a pizza night most Saturdays, sometimes homemade ones, sometimes shop bought (with varying degrees of fanciness). Nothing wrong with pizza at all.

She is either fussy about what dc eatsbut I guess you would know this if you are friendly?), had already made dinne for something got lost in translation.

The other mum was incredibly rude.

My son had a friend round once who was similar, along with his mum. We hever invited them round again.

I swear I've seen every meal my kids eat described as unhealthy on here. I have no idea what mumsnetters actually feed their kids on a day to day basis, assuming they actually eat it. Would love to see a sample weekly menu! Homemade pizza with tinned tomato base, peppers, ham/pepperoni and grated cheese is absolutely fine and probably on the healthier side of what my kids get down them.

Bearbookagainandagain · 03/05/2025 18:44

It's not a super healthy dinner, but we have it every other week or so (or just shop bought pizza). It's not a big deal once in a while.
The ratio dough to veggies will almost always make pizza unbalanced (unless you just have a few slices with a salad or veggies to the side).

I'm think first he probably missed the "homemade" bit and just "pizza".

And/or they could have already had a very unbalanced few days for whatever reason and she was keen for him to have a proper meal.

HunnyPot · 03/05/2025 18:46

That mum is one judgemental bin lid.

mathanxiety · 03/05/2025 18:47

@Kittyfluff

I agree - and I think there's an element of class marking to the widespread orthorexia. There's nothing more MC than looking down your nose at the supposed habits of the non U and seeking present yourself as 'better'. Add to that the cult of domesticity - it's an interesting spectacle.

violetsorrengail · 03/05/2025 18:48

@WimpoleHatwhy couldn't they go to Macdonalds with their friend?

To be fair I know the calorie count of most of my homemade meals as I am tracking in fitness pal.

How do you track homemade items in MFP (unless you have the premium version)?

Catsandcannedbeans · 03/05/2025 18:50

To be honest when someone else offers to feed my kids I’m always thrilled. They eat healthy when they’re home so one night off won’t hurt. Honestly, even if they hadn’t eaten great that day I’d probably still let them go because I don’t want them to miss out on the fun.

But what difference does it make what building pizza specifically is made in?! Even takeaways make them fresh….if you’re there in the shop it’s made in front of you.

Why? My Dc waa just excited to do it with him, wasn’t meant rudely at all. It wasn’t said to the mum, just to the friend

You belittled the Mums decision by sympathising. You should have said, “never mind we’ll do it again sometime and I’ll have a chat with your Mum about you coming.”

Discombobble · 03/05/2025 18:51

Not sure it’s worth starting a thread on

BaconButtiesAllRound · 03/05/2025 18:52

Maybe they had pizza the night before.

whenever anyone posts about pizza on Mumsnet you always get some lunatic saying pizza isn’t healthy.

It's a lot of bread, tiny bits of veg and cheese on top (and usually fatty ultra processed meat). It's objectively one of the most unhealthiest meal you can have.

It's still fine once in a while but you're deluded if you think it's healthy.

Riverswims · 03/05/2025 18:55

no food is inherently healthy or unhealthy, we all need a balanced diet. but then the neighbours mum knew that, she’s just rude. sorry that happened

I input the individual ingredients. I refuse to pay for the premium version 😂

doodleschnoodle · 03/05/2025 18:56

Just rebrand it as an organic flatbread with tomato pesto and seasonal greens.

HScully · 03/05/2025 18:56

Also depends what goes with it? I had a 480calorie pizza last night, sour dough base not too much cheese. Served with a huge salad, leaves, carrot, tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot, sweetcorn red pepper. Pretty balanced meal came in around 700calories according to my fitness pal
