Homemade pizza is not healthy, we’re having a proper dinner.

Dc playing with a neighbour friend, I asked if they wanted to help make homemade pizzas and stay for dinner and to check with the mum.
He came back and said that he wasn’t allowed, my Dc asked ‘Aww, why not?’ and he said that his mum said it wasn’t healthy and that she’d make a proper dinner.

We do this sometimes on Friday/Saturday, Dc enjoy the activity and choosing toppings-passata, mozzarella, mushrooms, peppers, spinach and so on to make funny pizza faces, is this massively unhealthy?!

So does calorie count define if something is “healthy”?

no wonder the diet and health industry make so much money 🙄

My guess is the salad made it healthy - this poster is pointing out it doesn't have to be 1,300 calories (as another poster had commented) of carbs and cheese.

thestudio · 03/05/2025 20:05

The ready made dough is UPF shite so tbh it's not much healthier than Dominos or fully shop bought pizza

BUT I very much doubt he said 'we're going to make homemade pizza' - he will just have said 'pizza' and she'll have assumed one of the above.

Bjorkdidit · 03/05/2025 20:08

Why would she assume its from Domino's or some other crap pizza?

Without further info it could be anything.

DuesToTheDirt · 03/05/2025 20:31

Honestly though, healthy/not healthy - do people really care about this for one meal?

Plus, it's nice to be invited, it's nice to invite people, it's nice to share meals and experiences with people outside your immediate family. Is that not more important?

ElaineBurdock · 03/05/2025 20:32

I make my own dough, which takes a few hours. I buy soft white wheat flour imported from Italy because it's better than the hard red wheat flour they sell here. (I'm not the UK). The pizza crust is very tasty.

I think pizza is a very healthy meal and it's also one of the few meals my grandson gobbles down.

Whatsgoingonherethenagain · 03/05/2025 20:40

The ready made dough I buy is wheat flour, salt, yeast, sugar, and olive oil.

would use exactly the same to make it myself.

Neighbour has insecurities surrounding food and their body imagery, which they are now sadly projecting onto their child. Hopefully the school will pick up on this before it caused any future harm to the child. I wouldn't give it anymore energy, OP. Neighbour is probably gagging for a pizza, but issues are making them anal.

Or maybe they have health issues and need to keep a close eye on their families carb intake or blood sugar. Not everyone who refuses pizza has an eating disorder...
As a nation our excessive consumption of carbs is causing us significant health issues. My kids have it occasionally as I want them to enjoy things in moderation, but from a carb perspective alone if the dough is made from regular white flour it is not healthy.

YearlySubscriptionRenewal · 03/05/2025 20:51

Maybe the neighbour didn't want to intrude on a bank holiday weekend
maybe she had plans
maybe it's the only time this week they are sitting down for diner together as a family

it's astonishing the grief someone can get for telling her kid to come home for diner 😂

it wasn't that, it was the "healthy meal" comment

What “significant health issues” are the direct result of carb consumption?

if the child had a serious medical issue that required strict carb control then surely a) the kid would know this at his age and b) the child’s mum would have told o/p that he wasn’t not allowed certain foods in case she inadvertently offered a biscuit.

there is nothing innately unhealthy about carbs.

MumWifeOther · 03/05/2025 21:02

Nothing wrong with a homemade pizza at all! Can be made very healthily

Sure, but why not just say that? "Sorry, we have plans." Job done.

You belittled the Mums decision by sympathising. You should have said, “never mind we’ll do it again sometime and I’ll have a chat with your Mum about you coming.”

My CHILD said it, not me

No, she bought the base in a roll!! It’s like me saying I make homemade bolognese because I cook pasta and open a bottle of dolmio. It’s no different to a takeaway (although a takeaway is probably better as it’s usually a freshly made sourdough base), or shop bought.

Personally I’m not fussed either way, but buying shop bought dough in a roll and putting cheese and various other things on the top is in no way one of the healthiest meals you can make!!!

No, we made the dough

Wow. Ok.
Obesity, diabetes, liver disease.. I could go on. Unhealthy carbs are having a huge effect. You can Google it and do your own research.
And no I'm not saying pizza should never been eaten, we do it ourselves too. But the amount of people here suggesting it's a healthy meal is shocking.

Not all carbs are bad, but the majority of supermarket pre-made doughs or even homemade do not contain a healthy type.

and as part of a normal diet are fine. I’m 170cm BMI 21, I eat carbs. I’ve had a full MOT (work and life insurance), all blood work normal. Liver, kidneys, the lot.

There is an obesity epidemic but it’s not just carbs!

And I'm happy to hear you are so well.
I didn't say the issues were entirely down to carbs, it's complex, but they are contributing massively and the studies are out there to prove that.

Do you mean refined carbs?

complex carbs are healthy in general

The situation is complex.
Not the carbs. Lol.

Bubblesaremyonlyfruit · 03/05/2025 21:47

But not if eaten as part of a healthy diet. Over eating, maybe, eaten in isolation, yes, but demonising carbs is not correct. I go with Chris VT on this matter, he effectively says it’s nonsense. Good enough for me.

Yes, I got that bit.

Which carbs in particular are you saying are unhealthy? What research have you read?

Tik tok? 🙄

Ponoka7 · 03/05/2025 21:56

A lot of MNers seemed to think that children won't remember holidays etc, because they don't. I put it down to the lack of carbs and fat. We need both, as children, for good brain development. Every seven year old is fine to have pizza, as a one off meal, that day, if invited somewhere. I say that as someone who's never eaten cereal and neither have my children.

I'm not demonising carbs and perhaps should have specified which carbs I was talking about in my first post (wrongly assumed that was a given). You can research excessive refined carbs contribution to all the issues I mention above and find various studies. Of course NOT in moderation as part of an otherwise healthy diet etc. But the basis of a healthy diet is knowing what a healthy meal is.. and pizza it ain't!
