Homemade pizza is not healthy, we’re having a proper dinner.

Dc playing with a neighbour friend, I asked if they wanted to help make homemade pizzas and stay for dinner and to check with the mum.
He came back and said that he wasn’t allowed, my Dc asked ‘Aww, why not?’ and he said that his mum said it wasn’t healthy and that she’d make a proper dinner.

We do this sometimes on Friday/Saturday, Dc enjoy the activity and choosing toppings-passata, mozzarella, mushrooms, peppers, spinach and so on to make funny pizza faces, is this massively unhealthy?!

Individual foods aren't unhealthy, it depends what goes into the overall diet.

Absolutely this - @Bjorkdidit beat me to it. Plus - what actually is unhealthy is having such a rigid attitude to food that you cause social awkwardness for your child. Another mother suggested she take my child to McDonalds with her DD on the way home from an event. I said, “that’s really kind of you, but I’ve already made dinner”. Not “urgh - no way is that a healthy dinner for my child”. Because that’s bloody rude and she was trying to do something nice. (I do accept that things can get a bit lost in translation with 7 year olds, but I suspect that “Ewww - unhealthy” was closer to the unfiltered response than not!).

Could be an almond mum.

Isn't it strange just how much highly processed stuff supermarkets sell that never ever gets eaten by anyone?

I mean, as everyone absolutely cooks 100% healthy foods "from scratch", and wouldn't dream of giving their precious little angels a biscuit, how are all these food manufacturers even still in business.

I find the competitive healthfulfulness online nauseating.

Lies and/or hypocrisy run rampant.

Labelling freshly made pizza as unhealthy is merely another example of performative healthiness.

Not every meal, nor morsel to pass one's lips, needs to nutritional perfection.

Come to think of it, how do fast food outlets also remain open if nobody ever eats junk food.

Everybody is perfect where it comes to food apart from me it seems.

Or me, and totall agree!

We have days without veg, I know, that's not great is it. Used to be much more on it when kids where younger but no I just sometimes go with the flow. I have veg myself but not much tbh.

Saying that, we're all a healthy lot who don't generally come down with colds. Not that it has any relevance but I can imagine people making assumptions - both me and DH are of a healthy weight, we're middle class (both post-grads). I LOVE coco pops, the odd Big Mac as well as seafood and salads.

I do thin worrying about food to the extent of some on here (and some of my friends in truth), is just unhealthy. Sometimes I think it's a control issue and to do with underlying anxiety. Anxiety and stress, my friends, are the biggest killers so just CHILL.

Why on earth would you not let you child go with this child and mum to McD??

@Summerwillbesoshortthisyear your pizza sounds divine and its so lovely the children get involved in making it as well. You sound like a brilliant Mum - don’t give what the neighbour said a second thought and tuck into your pizza with an incredibly unhealthy glass of wine 🍷🍕❤️

She might be an awful Mum who just happens to make fancy pizzas!

ThatRareLimeFinch · 03/05/2025 18:25

i mean it can be incredibly unhealthy. we made pizza 2 weeks ago, just base homemade suace, mozzerella, fennel salami, soprasata and spinach and it was over 1300 calories. 😳

SalfordQuays · 03/05/2025 18:20

OP I think you’re overreacting.

You didn’t see the need to tell this child that you plan to make artisan pizzas, home made dough, with yoghurt, topped with spinach etc. Fair enough. But then you feel insulted when the kid comes back and says his Mum wants him to have something healthy. I guarantee he’ll have gone to his Mum and said “can I have pizza at my friend’s house”, and she’ll have imagined Dominoes crap, which is basically flour and oil. Are you really pretending you don’t know what “pizza” means to most people? If you’re going to be offended that your pizza is being harshly judged, then you should have described the pizza beforehand!

So what if it was Dominos?

Jeez - people on here are so precious.

I live in a lovely area, middle class and all educated parents and they're just a lot more chill. Thank goodness!

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 03/05/2025 18:26

@SalfordQuays i am assuming she isn’t though as she seems upset about this

dont know why you would suggest @Summerwillbesoshortthisyear is an ‘awful mum’ 🤔

Again. High in calories does not mean unhealthy.

Low calorie does not mean healthy either.

What's unhealthy? The calories?
Sorry to ask but do you worry about your weight??

mathanxiety · 03/05/2025 18:27

I agree with @SlagPit
The mum definitely has a massive stick up her arse. I'd say the child repeated exactly what the mother said.

Orthorexia has become a socially acceptable eating disorder.

WonderingWanda · 03/05/2025 18:28

Why are so many people saying homemade pizza isn't healthy, it has 5 ingredients when I make it and then we serve it with salad. Carbs and fat are fine to eat in moderation as part of a balance diet.

Auroraloves · 03/05/2025 18:28

@Summerwillbesoshortthisyear I wouldn’t worry about declining the invitation, like others have said they may have already had dinner plans.

The Mum should have been more gracious though when she declined your invitation. I’d be less welcoming in the future.

AquaPeer · 03/05/2025 18:27

I just wanted to avoid people thinking that if you're middle class you MUST absolutely be eating spinach salad every day. That's all. Nothing more to it. hahahaha

What led to you measuring or estimating the calories?

And what is your problem with calories?

user2848502016 · 03/05/2025 18:31

How rude! We make homemade pizzas too, not sure how they can be unhealthy when it’s homemade dough and toppings are usually veg.
We also have shop bought pizza sometimes too, how horrific!!

YearlySubscriptionRenewal · 03/05/2025 18:32

This thread is pure MN 😂

2 seven-year old pop in one of their house asking at the last minute if one can stay with the other for diner, mum says no like most people would say, kids report back to the other house

and the drama and outrage that follows on MN is endless

TillyTrifle · 03/05/2025 18:32

We have homemade pizzas every Saturday. Dough made from scratch and rolled out thin, passata sauce and veg, tuna etc on top. No processed meats. Always a side of cucumber and other salad bits too. I’m very comfortable that it’s a perfectly balanced and healthy meal for our family. However I’m also aware that if I just told someone that we have pizza every Saturday, that may raise eyebrows as a lot of people would assume that means dominos or shop bought.

itcouldhavebeenme · 03/05/2025 18:32

@Summerwillbesoshortthisyear
I feel genuinely sorry for the friends and kids of some of the people on here.

It seems that people are fixated about healthy eating nowadays. It's just unhealthy. One of my friends who was always focusing on 'healthy eating' - no ready meals ever, certainly no coco pops or Nutella in the cupboard - ended up with her child having anorexia.

It's just so odd. People are so precious. Life is for living and to stop a child from socialising due to what's on offer at their friend's house for dinner is just a bit weird.

So what if they're eating Dominos and chicken nuggets for 2-3 days on the trot. Not going to kill them.

Anxiety and over involvement with food and nutrition = much more unhealthy.

To be fair I know the calorie count of most of my homemade meals as I am tracking in fitness pal.

EmmaJane2025 · 03/05/2025 18:34

You’re asking in the wrong place, OP! Before long the competitively smug mums will arrive who declare anything other than organic grilled chicken, veg & quinoa to be ‘UPF’ & ‘junk’

Bug90 · 03/05/2025 18:34

The mother is being a complete twat imo.
