Homemade pizza is not healthy, we’re having a proper dinner.

Dc playing with a neighbour friend, I asked if they wanted to help make homemade pizzas and stay for dinner and to check with the mum.
He came back and said that he wasn’t allowed, my Dc asked ‘Aww, why not?’ and he said that his mum said it wasn’t healthy and that she’d make a proper dinner.

We do this sometimes on Friday/Saturday, Dc enjoy the activity and choosing toppings-passata, mozzarella, mushrooms, peppers, spinach and so on to make funny pizza faces, is this massively unhealthy?!

Definitely not unhealthy.

GiveDogBone · 04/05/2025 19:52

A homemade pizza can be perfectly healthy. Just depends on what you put on it.

changeme4this · 04/05/2025 21:30

We do home made pizzas from scratch as well including making the base. It’s a great way to get children involved in putting a meal together.

having said that, I don’t know anyone in our circle who makes them. So I’m thinking she might have thought it was one of those from the freezer to oven type products…

Whatsgoingonherethenagain · 04/05/2025 21:39

Here’s a pizza express marguerita- bog standard, cheap, frozen pizza. Handy to keep in the freezer.

ingredients are no different to what I’d use at home, except maybe I’d use olive instead of rapeseed oil. I’m sure there are pizzas with do if I could be bothered to look.

wheat flour, mozzarella, tomatoes, cheddar, oil, salt sugar yeast herbs lemon juice.

i can’t even see a problem with that tbh. It can’t be much different to homemade, and at 300 calories for half a pizza it’s not going to cause obesity and diabetes if eaten now and again as part of a healthy diet.

I agree.

And just because it’s bought and not made from scratch doesn’t mean it’s necessarily worse than homemade. Not everything has upfs if you choose carefully. Homemade isn’t automatically better.

Girasoli · 04/05/2025 21:53

Also a bit rude to call something "not a proper dinner" even if she doesn't think it's healthy (I think home made pizza is pretty healthy usually).

Thalia31 · 05/05/2025 04:10

Very unlikely. What is more likely is that the child said they were having pizza not explaining it was homemade. Mum probably thought it was a frozen pizza

I have a whole weeks meals planned, so at 3pm - especially on a Saturday or Sunday - I would be well into the meal prep. We have a dinner, bedtime routine and changing that at the last minute (yes that’s 3pm) could potentially mess up our evening. Don’t take this so personally.

What, one portion not eaten and your child having some fun. I bet you’re great in a crisis

I’m impressed with that. Never thought they’d be quite so ‘free from’ shite!

Summerwillbesoshortthisyear · 03/05/2025 16:49

Why? My Dc waa just excited to do it with him, wasn’t meant rudely at all. It wasn’t said to the mum, just to the friend

Its pestering a child. You just take their answer and go with it.

Child probably felt under pressure to say something and this is the outcome

Theres no point trying to explain that sort of thing on this forum, its the same with any mention of ready meals.

Bjorkdidit · 05/05/2025 08:20

Exactly @soupyspoon. I was also surprised about the lack of shite in the Pizza Express pizza, but it's true that ready made ones aren't all terrible.

If I lower myself to ready made pizza, I have this one although we get them from Costco, where you get two for not much more than that price.

They're also pretty much shite free, contain almost a full portion of vegetables and are excellent quality.

I generally avoid ready meals because most of them do taste crap and are full of crap, but I do like the M&S High Protein range, which do appear to be only real food and are pretty much protein and veg. Although I'm sure MN could still write them off as processed UPF shite devoid of nutrition.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 05/05/2025 08:40

Kid probably didn’t mention the homemade aspect. Don’t worry about it!

doodleschnoodle · 05/05/2025 09:59

Off topic but the Crosta and Mollica frozen pizzas are the nicest I’ve ever had and very normal ingredients list. The Stromboli one is so tasty.

What has a 7 year olds dinner and bedtime got to do with being great in a crisis?

Well in your above response you seem very fixed on a course of action and inflexible…

Oh wow you’ve completely worked me out based on that one insignificant and hypothetical scenario. In a world where we want to build each other up, Mumsnet exists to allow women to perpetually and anonymously knock each other right down. Crazy.

Yep totally. Unclench a little, your life might be freer and that of your kids.

I was wondering too how you jumped to someone being bad in a crisis if they happen to have a plan in place for the evening!

Having a plan and having a routine for young children doesn't mean someone is inflexible! Parents often have a fun plan in place for weekend evenings, nothing wrong with not wanting it changed last minute, especially if the family don't get a chance to spend much quality time together during the week. Nothing wrong either with having a bedtime routine for young children, particularly if they're poor sleepers.

@LondonNootropics

how stifling! Try being more spontaneous you might enjoy it!

Making homemade pizzas can be lost in translation. Buying ready made bases, adding ready made sauce and putting highly processed cheese on top is making homemade pizzas... We used to make "Pizzas" using white bread or baguettes this way too!

Making the dough from scratch, making the sauce and adding lots of fresh things on top is what I'd class as homemade pizza too. And mine loved the activity at that age!

Maybe explain next time you see the Mum... Or maybe she doesn't like anything involving white flour/gluten/carbs?
