Have you heard of the Bible?

Most of the people who call themselves Christians don't follow the teachings of the bible.

LillyPJ · 03/05/2025 20:15

Probably mostly the same as some humans wrote in the bible - don't kill or hurt people, don't steal from people, don't do nasty stuff to other people. We have morals because we are social animals who have empathy and realise that it's best if we treat other people how we want to be treated. Nobody needs a book to work that out.

These are Christian Values!!

They are every religion and no religion values

This might be true

Most of the people who call themselves Christians don't follow the teachings of the bible.

Then they are Christians in name only. @LivingDeadGirlUK

I am sure that Jesus would be labelled as woke and an enemy of the people if he was to preach his sermons today.

And many people who talk about Judeo Christian values don't seem to follow them. That's if they even know them.

Thepossibility · 03/05/2025 20:30

I'm not religious but DH family is. So we were engaged before we moved in together and married young. It's worked out better for me in the long run I'd say reading stories on here of women being left high and dry with kids to support and limited access to funds when their DP fucks off with another woman, because they weren't married. It turns out the 'just a piece of paper' is very valuable indeed.

The Ten Commandments are quite a good starting point I think. Obviously if you’re not religious leave out the god ones.

Also,
be respectful, considerate, empathetic and kind

Fimofriend · 03/05/2025 21:08

Oh, I get it. Because we are atheists we must be immoral.

Listen here: If you can only act like a decent human being because you are afraid of punishment then you are not a decent person.

cakeorwine · 03/05/2025 21:10

Have people seen The Good Place on Netflix?

Without any spoilers, it's a very interesting show on what being good actually means, living an ethical life etc.

If people are trying to be good just to get into Heaven, are they truly good people?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 03/05/2025 21:21

Boredlass · 03/05/2025 12:34

Same. I despise religion. In fact, despise isn’t a strong enough word

You 2 are gonna be reported and deleted. You must know how easily offended these religious types are. Their views matter more than yours 😂

Silvers11 · 03/05/2025 22:40

cakeorwine · 03/05/2025 17:27

Those are values.
Christians can have those values.
So can other people who aren't Christian.

Imagine a Venn diagram. 100 people can have those values. Of those values, say 50 people are Christian. That means that 50 people also have those values but aren't Christian.

(There are also some Christians who don't have those values)

I agree. But the question was asking for. Some non- Christian values. So to name those ones is incorrect!

Menopausalmum43 · 03/05/2025 22:53

I'm a Christian but:

  1. I believe that same sex couples should be welcomed and married in church if they choose.
  2. I believe that there is one God but we call him different things.
  3. I believe in the supernatural/ paranormal.
  4. I believe being a good human being is more important than belief in God.
  5. I don't pray. 6)I don't believe in hell.
  6. I swear often but never take the Lords name in vain.
  7. I think the bible is just a guideline and is outdated.
  8. I hate preachy people who thinks everyone should be a Christian.
Fathomsbelow · 03/05/2025 22:56

Except in this case it's true. @pikkumyy77

If people are trying to be good just to get into Heaven, are they truly good people?

You can't get into heaven by being a good person. @cakeorwine

Fathomsbelow · 03/05/2025 22:58

What denomination do you see yourself as? @Menopausalmum43

Tryingtokeepgoing · 03/05/2025 22:59

Fathomsbelow · 03/05/2025 20:10

@cakeorwine That is a classic example of ignorance surrounding the Christian faith, holy scripture and how it's practiced.

Is it ignorance to call out hypocracy?

Fathomsbelow · 03/05/2025 23:02

It isn't hypocrisy if you understand it. @Tryingtokeepgoing

MrsEverest · 03/05/2025 23:23

A more interesting question would be what Christian values people calling themselves Christian actually live by!

Much harder to answer!

Brahumbug · 03/05/2025 23:24

Fathomsbelow · 03/05/2025 19:59

Are you an ancient Israelite? @KIlliePieMyOhMy

@Brahumbug The Hebrew word for boys here can mean any young man of between 12 and 30 years old.

Given the context of calling somebody bald, it is obviously younger children, but regardless of age, it isn't really acceptable to murder 40 youngsters by tearing them apart with two she bears.

KeepDancing1 · 03/05/2025 23:33

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 03/05/2025 16:08

I have been thinking about this some more. I guess of the fundamentally non-Christian values that I have is the belief that we should make the very most of opportunities in this life because it is all that we have. And that we should do our very best to make a positive difference to the world for the same reason.

Exactly this.

Breadandsticks · 03/05/2025 23:34

Most core values are universal. If you read the Bible or a holy book, you will find that the number one value is centred around love or kindness or caring - which transcends all.

I live by I am not better than anybody, but nobody else is better than me.

I don’t know if this stems from a holy book or philosopher - or a writer…

Midsummernightsdreaming · 04/05/2025 00:42

I was reliably informed that my son would go to Hell if I didn’t have him Christened. I decided to risk it, and to get said person to repeat back to me very slowly what they had just said. Did they honestly believe this would happen to a newborn baby boy just because his mother hadn’t had him Christened? Utter insanity.

QuaintShaker · 04/05/2025 00:56

cardibach · 03/05/2025 15:41

I’m not in favour of either murder or killing really. Are Christians?

Well...when I had a brief period of interest in neopaganism as a teen and, very briefly, was listed as a moderator of a regional subforum, I received quite a lot of death threats from Christians.

Christians also tend to support the death penalty in higher numbers than the general population.

I think its fair to say that Christian views on killing are...nuanced.
