AIBU for being so proud of dd achieving this at 17?

Dd has one of her artworks on exhibit at the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Open Exhibition. I don’t think I’m BU to be so proud of her, although IRL she doesn’t think it’s worth mentioning to friends! She’s the youngest in the show.

The first painting she did at 15 is of her dad ‘I love dad and dad loves me’

Wow, that's incredible!

Incredible work, so talented. I’m curious though, why study GCSE and A Level in Scotland? Does the syllabus for Higher Art fall short in some way?

She is super lucky and was awarded an art scholarship to a school which follows the English system. We wouldn’t have been able to send her otherwise.

I'm a professional artist and I'm in awe of your daughter's talent at such a young age. You should indeed enjoy being a proud mum!

Wow! Just thank you.

I think that's wonderful OP.

I think you have every right to be proud of her talent.

But I think you should be very proud that she isn't boastful and is being mindful of her friends and their feelings. Not everyone has such a lot going for them and such a bright future ahead of them and her consideration becomes her.

Hmmmm- I’d say it depends. Yes, absolutely, consideration and lack of boastfulness is good.

BUT, I think particularly women are often socialised to avoid taking credit where credit is due, or avoid expressing self confidence, in case they will be attacked for getting above themselves.

im not saying you are doing this, OP, but I do think it’s right that you assure her she has much to be proud of and that anybody who cares about her will be delighted for her. I hope she feels and knows that.

I know that I ended up in a first marriage, sub consciously underplaying all my achievements, because deep down I knew he didn’t want me to shine. I hope your daughter knows she is allowed to shine!

and her painting is amazing- the technique, yes, but also the character that shines through in the portrait. Fantastic!

Theyre truly fabulous - I just looked at her website. She’s amazing. … you probably know all this but I just asked ChatGPT based on a portraiture old masters type courses for 18 year olds…. !! Def start a GoFundMe !! X

  1. Full-Time Atelier Programs (Professional Track)**
If you're ready to commit full-time, many ateliers accept students straight out of high school. These are immersive, 3-4 year programs similar to how the Old Masters trained their apprentices.

Best Options for 18-year-olds:

  • *Florence Academy of Art*
  • *Angel Academy of Art*
  • *Grand Central Atelier*
  • *Swedish Academy of Realist Art*
  • *London Fine Art Studios*

These schools do not require a university degree. They focus on building skill, not academic prerequisites.

ShrunkInTheWashAgain · 03/05/2025 11:32

Wow! And she's self taught ?!

gavelgirl · 03/05/2025 11:32

I work in ‘the arts’ and her paintings are exceptional for her age - it took some of the old masters decades to achieve works with such detail. I look forward to seeing her name come up at work one day!!

@Ahappymediumlarge

Purely reading between the lines, I think funding may be an issue for Ruby, could you suggest organisations to approach?

Thank you. She would love to go to the Florence Academy of Art. All the schools you mention are private and you can’t get student loans for them, so we’re figuring it out. I have put together a go fund me. It’s just waiting to be approved by Moment but I’ll also try and put the link on her website on the contact page.

Is that her name below the painting? If so then she might not want it on mumsnet if she isn't even mentioning it to her friends.

Congratulations to your daughter.

Lol. Its on public display

MaxandMoritz · 03/05/2025 11:36

She is truly exceptional and with a lovely attitude too.

I wish her a wonderful future.

It’s great she’s ambitious. In addition to the GoFundMe - it may be worth asking at the Scottish exhibition (where she’s currently exhibiting) if there are sponsors looking to support individuals.

The art school itself in Florence may also be interested in giving a bursary? Her talent in capturing expression not just the look of the character is exceptional and they may have a fund or put some money towards her fees to nurture her further.

There may also be charities or websites to help guide parents in looking after or nurturing a prodigy, which your daughter undoubtedly is!

Will share her Instagram and website with an arts type journalist I know who may be able to raise further awareness or put in touch with people who can help.

more funding opportunities @FriendlyLaundryMonster
