To not understand why Farage needs to be so smug and flippant about people losing their job?

Just seen reports of the speech in which Nigel Farage tells council staff who are employed on DEI initiatives and climate change to “find new careers”.

I get Reform view these things as a waste of public money, and if they’ve been democratically elected on that mandate, then those departments will be cut.

However, whatever you think of those departments, the people he’s talking about are about to lose their livelihoods. They’ll have bills and families. I’m not saying that means they’re immune to cuts or they shouldn’t lose their jobs. I just don’t know why he feels the need to be so shitty about it.

Sadly with the brexit vote, the covid antivaxxers and now today's vote, it has become clear just how stupid the public is. He is playing to the stupid and they're lapping it up. Today is a very dark day for British politics. Racism is seeping into the stupid's psyche and because the stupid outnumber the less stupid, they are winning. It's happening all over Europe. It's embarrassing that we allow Farage anywhere near our country's leadership and genuinely scary where this will end.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 02/05/2025 21:19

There is a real problem with how some of the media and people like farage have the idea that councils are wasting millions

they have a real issue with people working from home as well

Amazing the left aren't they, when Labour announce a cull of pointless jobs and a cut to 2000 civil servants not much is said. Reform do it and they are the anti christ.

Which parts of diversity, equality, and inclusion do you think should be cut? Who should it be legal to discriminate against?

Can you genuinely not see the difference between Labour's cull and Reform's cull? My previous point proven.

lavenderlou · 02/05/2025 21:23

My council didn't have elections but they run things like internship programmes for young people with autism. This is the sort of thing that I hope will be useful for my own autistic DC and I imagine is exactly the sort of thing Farage and Reform will want to cut.

He doesn't have the power to sack people. We have employment laws and unions in this country. I wonder how many of those people he is threatening to sack voted Reform.

Yep. "I didn't expect leopards to eat my face......".
Then people will wonder why social care is falling apart (even more) and there doesn't seem to be as many people at the council responding to phone calls.

The problem at our LA (that just went Reform) is there isn’t the physical space anymore to accommodate everyone coming back to the office, as they were forced to sell most of it off to fill a financial hole. DH works there so will be interesting to see how quickly they insist on a return to the office. Hadn’t even thought of that to be honest - will need to plan ahead for that change to our routine!

They won't lose their jobs because they dont exist. He's talking crap. Someone does it as well as their main job. Just like the real DOGE, his nonsense will hardly save any money at all. All Doge has done is sack people so theyve had to close the National Parks Service, lose tourist money and discreetly hire everyone back again. They'll need to be cutting adult social càre or children's services to save money. I wonder how popular that will be?

Edited

They absolutely do exist! Take a look on LinkedIn there are numerous EDI specialists, particularly in the public sector.

CamillaMacauley · 02/05/2025 21:28

So if reform are so pro DOGE why have I got a new level of bureaucracy in the shape of a Reform mayor? We haven’t had a mayor before, i don’t believe we need one.

TheWiseGoose · 02/05/2025 21:29

I don't like Farage but I celebrate DEI people losing their job after being told at my employment that if you're white you're privilege and have to always treat your non white colleagues like you're guilty. I'm not white by the way but I Hate people who make careers out of divisions and injustice and ironically, discrimination.

There was support for Labour on here pretty much for those job losses

No you are right, i work for a county council and we don’t fit it the office

i can see them wanting people in maybe twice a week but large departments will struggle to fit so that might not work

Because NHS England is a prohibitively expensive quango diverting money from frontline services and duplicating functions. By the way, it’s the government now which just happens to be Labour.

MugsyBalonz · 02/05/2025 21:10

I said similar earlier today.

I feel bad for the people living in the area but I sincerely hope that Reform run that council into the ground, that they bankrupt it, massively fuck up services, mismanage the whole lot, and basically preside over such a cluster fuck that they will forever be synonymous with the term. That way, people might think twice about voting for them at the next GE.

My area has gone Reform but I didn't vote for them. That's rather unfair on people like me although I do hope they cock up to a lesser extent so they don't get in again. In reality I think they'll find it's not as easy to do what they want as they think.

MyDiamondShoesAreTooBig · 02/05/2025 21:35

Those sorts of roles are pure grift, so I’d say those people have had their snouts in the public money trough for long enough.

Time they learnt to code!

He's working on that though. People can't see why he is so dangerous. They will vote him in at the general election unless the next few years are a disaster.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/05/2025 21:37

JoyousEagle · 02/05/2025 21:17

There’s also his abhorrent tone about it. “You all better be seeking alternative careers very very quickly”. Openly not giving a single shit about the prospect of someone losing their job.

Hopefully all those employees will be hanging on for their redundancy money.

Rictasmorticia · 02/05/2025 21:38

He speaks in sound bites that get the media attention. There are some who say he appeals to the lowest common denominator of the electorate. I loathe the man, his party and his politics, but I have to acknowledge that he has struck a chord with a lot of people.

The other parties problem is that, when ordinary people raised genuine concerns, they were branded racist. Stopping them from having a voice.

Coolasfeck · 02/05/2025 21:39

Well they won on ridiculously low voter turnout’s and local elections are usually when people risk a protest vote.

I’m actually glad they won those seats because people will be able to see how awful they are. Screaming about ‘stop the boats’ from the sidelines won’t translate into sorting out local social services, filling in potholes and dealing with fly tipping in government.

Astonishing that voters have seen him say he wants us to import chlorinated chicken and end the NHS and still vote for him though.

Reform MPs are the swivel eyed Ann Widdicombe types. The reality of their leadership will kill any chances of them doing well in a general election regardless of how mu can coverage their fanboys at the BBC give them as I’m assuming Farage will be on every Question Time and will be given a slot on Bedtime Stories on CBBC.

Well they will be a disaster so I don’t think we need to worry too much. I wonder how many of these newly elected councillors will still be in place in a couple of years when faced with the reality of actually taking responsibility? I reckon they’ll be resigning in droves.

jewelcase · 02/05/2025 21:44

Reform are running Councils courtesy of 30% of a 30% turnout, and I suspect most of even that tiny proportion of voters couldn’t give much of a shit about Council workers in DEI and Climate Change. They just hate foreigners and are generally pissed off (with varying degrees of reasonableness).

Those Reform Councillors are going to have an enormous learning curve, and are going to realise pretty quickly how limited their powers are, how fucked Councils are, and how things aren’t quite as simple as Nige would have them believe. Because,
you know what? If there were simple solutions to complex problems someone would have implemented them already.

Getting everyone to stop WFH, for example. Interesting idea, although the idea that it makes a positive productivity difference is not backed up by actual data. More pertinently though the Councils have sold off all the offices to pay for exploding care needs so there’s nowhere for people to work anyway. Good luck Reform! You’re just the kind of patient, reasonable, partnership-focused people to work all this out.

Couple of years?! More like a couple of months when many of them are exposed as being on various ‘registers’ due to lack of proper vetting.
