Gyles Brandreth - urgh

Currently on This Morning advocating for ‘weaponised male incompetence’ proudly stating how he does house jobs badly so his wife takes them over. They’re all laughing at this jolly little admission.

Men like him make me fucking sick

OP posts:

My uncle became friends with Gyles and Michele at Oxford; I've met them and their three children a few times.

Away from the media, Gyles is completely different. Michele is no pushover - and if he had ever adopted his misogynistic public persona at home he'd have had his head handed to him on a plate years ago.

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 02/05/2025 12:03

Side note: his son, Benet, is a delight! Great comic

WorriedOnion · 02/05/2025 12:08

There's a video lurking on the internet that I can't find of Gary Glitter and Gyles Brandreth both on Good Morning Britain, Nick Owen is also there as the presenter. I can't remember what the 'joke' they made was but it was something to do with googly glasses and young boys or children, something along those lines.

Whenever I see or hear of Gyles Brandreth now I wonder if he regrets that interaction or if he's yet another charmer with many, many contacts and stories who we should definitely not put on a pedestal.

Oh no he’s not gay. He’s classic misogynist middle aged white male

And this comment is ageist, misandrist and a tad racist.

Do you not think it’s time to stop with hate-filled generalisations?

MrsPlantagenet · 02/05/2025 11:13

I love Gyles.

My husband won’t let me load the dishwasher because I do it so badly <whistles innocently>.

I was about to say the same thing!

i also am banned from ironing shirts…

(i thought we all did these things! 😬)

I have no idea who this guy is…but I love how you were annoyed at someone suggesting it was a joke, and got defensive about giving sexism/racism air time…and then you just go ahead and be racist and ageist and sexist all in one sentence…

Sherararara · 02/05/2025 12:23

Smart man

JustSawJohnny · 02/05/2025 12:26

I cannot get past the fact he's married to a woman.

Mad shocker.

JustSawJohnny · 02/05/2025 12:26

Sherararara · 02/05/2025 12:23

Smart man

For what?

Acting like a child so his wife has to step up and play Mummy?

If you knew who he was you wouldn't be shocked in the slightest 😂

Middle aged at 77?

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 02/05/2025 12:29

I got most of the way through this, so confused by some of the comments, especially those liking him, then I realised I was thinking about the other Giles. The truly awful one! D’uh
eta:I know this adds nothing to the conversation. I haven’t seen this Giles on anything (maybe because I don’t watch live tv and only stream stuff), or read much about him in years!
Plus, I must admit, I’ve probably used the helpless female trope to my advantage over the years. Not for anything important, ie professionally etc, but at home etc, for the things I might not want to do, but god help anyone else who packs the dishwasher wrong etc 😄

MaxandMoritz · 02/05/2025 12:30

You say the others are all laughing?
I don't know who they are but are they not just as bad for laughing along?

scalt · 02/05/2025 12:37

"I was an MP until the people spoke."

I once heard him on "I've never seen Star Wars" discussing how he is a total workaholic, and that the thing he was there to do which he had never done before was to take a day off. The "weaponised male incompetence" is a well-known trope, he probably said it because he knows people can relate to it.

At least he’s admitted it, it’s up to his wife if she runs behind him sweeping up. It’s a good thing in a way as some viewers may have had their eyes opened and can decide whether to make a stand in their own life/ lazy DHs or not

It’s not though is it.
She has to either live in a pig sty, the kids loose out if she doesn’t run behind him sweeping up.

That’s how they get away with it.

Best option is to leave these types

Growlybear83 · 02/05/2025 12:42

Why would it bother you if it’s not a problem for his wife?

SmegmaCausesBV · 02/05/2025 12:46

He is a bit of an attention seeker but not a misogynist. He's always very cheeky but he knows what he is saying, which actually makes men think that in fact THEY do these things too (which is more than any woman telling them will get through to them). He's not vindictive or anything negative, but does love the sound of his own voice. More interesting than a lot of famous people though to be honest.

stampin · 02/05/2025 12:55

He can laugh at himself, he's always entertaining.

When he was on Pointless recently he drove Alexander Armstrong mad with the continual name dropping. Most enjoyable watching 'Xander' getting ruffled.

He does it on Just A MInute and with Susie Dent on his podcast. It's one of the silly tropes he has about himself. Would far rather that than hear Alan Carr witter on to be honest!

Does that make him peddling it about the media better or worse though?

I can’t even bear his voice, so the podcast is out. Can’t stand him - as for ‘sense of humour’ I’ve never heard him say anything even vaguely funny on the occasions I have been unfortunate enough to have caught bits of him talking.

I am useless at making the bed correctly...

(Nb. DH and I both loathe duvets, it's traditional bedding, so a little skill is involved)

Which other Giles? Brandreth is totally awful. Can’t think of another one.

He was a close friend of Prince Philip's - which suggests to me that he may just not be the kindest, most caring or humble of people.

This. The man has said many unpleasant things, that seems to be missed somehow. Horrible racist.

Weekmindedfool · 02/05/2025 13:12

Gosh man makes joke shocker! Stop the world!
just say you hate men and get it over with.
