Reform winning big

1000 replies

Keirawr · 02/05/2025 06:21

Reform had a good night, winning county councils, probably will win a mayoral seat and won the parliamentary by election also.

You don’t have to be a Reform voter to acknowledge that they are taking votes off Labour. Or that they are being electorally effective.

No doubt the ‘basket of deplorables’ crowd will be along in a min with their usual quips calling reform voters names, having learned absolutely 0 from Brexit. Insult the voters at your peril.

These same people also totally miss the point that winning is winning. Feeling all moral and superior about ‘oh well, what will they actually do’ changes nothing.

Perhaps those who label everyone that wants immigration limiting as ‘racist’ Will think again. But likely not.

They had more, 2021 was a high point. And a low point for Labour, which has now gone down.

Yes, I know but it still remains that thew Conservatives are getting more of a kicking so far, in these elections.

🥱

Is it emoji time? It’s only early.

I know people want Labour to be seen as not impacted, but they will be.

I thought it was supposed to be very rude to correct other people's grammar and spelling on MN. Maybe only for certain people 😉

Not even that poster was grammatically correct read her response. My whole post would need changing for it to make sense. I know some people struggle at least correct me properly. Her emotions got the better of her.

Rivypike · 02/05/2025 12:08

I’m thinking bring it on. In 4 years time if things are still that bad let’s give them a chance to mess things up (which they will definitely do). The UK can get a taste of trumpian policies once and for all. See how that goes.

Why do people put faith in these people, their intellectual rigour is not exactly convincing!

Anyone would think that she had been in the electoral wilderness for years, instead of being a Minister in a Conservative Government that had been in power for 14 years. It's always the underdog rhetoric with people like her, who have actually been part of the establishment for decades. Her Government was in charge of immigration for 14 years but she has completely distanced herself from this. What a hypocrite.

@Itsnotmyjobtoeducatestupid I posted this exact same thought earlier. We ignore Reform at our peril we really do. And just calling someone stupid well thats gone well hasnt it. Labour are seen as the party of the cities. They literally have no idea about rural life and all of those farmers who are asset rich and cash poor wont be voting for them. Rural communities are seeing huge swathes of growing land covered in solar panels. No wonder they arent seeing the green argument when you look at your window and you are attacked by the glare! The Tories are just a shambolic pastiche of a party. So yes, wait until you see the results in rural areas like Cornwall and Devon. See how much traction Reform has here. I voted tactically to keep the Reform candidate out in my area but have I done enough? Immigration is a MASSIVE concern for many people. the other parties have promised and not delivered. So guess what people are looking around and voting to give someone else a go at it.

The concept of farmers voting for Reform aka Farage is an interesting one, given how he fucked them over with Brexit. Loss of £3.5bn annually in EU farming subsidies (CAP) which have never been replaced with any post-Brexit funding initiatives.

Turkeys voting for Christmas.

I didn't vote as Labour said we are being re-organised so couldn't have local elections but your response is a typical sneering one. Who said I was attracted to immigration policies ?

Which of Labours policies attract you ?
Not allowing national inquries into r@pe gangs ?
or WFA ?
or taxing farmers ?
or MPs attacking constituents
or MPs charged with horrendous images
or MPs suggesting "knifey" things ?
or jailing people for years for hurty words but letting prisoners out early to make room ?
or needing a judge to spell out biological facts ?
or allowing thousands of undocumented people into the country, each week.

I am happy to answer your questions if you answer mine first.

Wales show Labour is under threat too from Reform.

Yes.

Though pretty sure last election Tory's lost as many votes to Lid dems as they did Reform.

Labour been in power 20+ years here - and they are in control of health and education nether of which is doing that great - though mentioning that on here during election time tended to get shouted down by same posters and excuses found.

thepariscrimefiles · 02/05/2025 11:50

It all sounds a bit 'Kinder, Küche, Kirche'.

Mind-blowing sexist contempt for someone who really offered a nuanced and informed opinion.

Being progressive and antiracist, it’s not parroting slogans and theories in the comfort of your own home and attending marches and feeling all virtuous, it’s, when you are challenged or in a conflict, to resist the urge to resort to racist and sexist tropes to try to take the advantage or to make yourself feel better. Yours is really just a veneer. Lots of hatred in the Left, voters feel it.

Why can’t this be pointed out ? The reason the country is in such a mess is because of Brexit which was Farage’s obsession. Labour should really make this a talking point rather than trying to placate Leavers who are fixated on Reform. They need to fight dirty like the Tories did.

Why are these people so predictable?

less than 1 page in and it’s like a bingo call card -

Reform cheated

Like I say, learned nothing from Brexit.

So many learning absolutely nothing from the USA either eh? 🙄

I saw her comment and was disgusted! I have some very close friends who are from South Africa. They work very hard, pay their taxes and have never claimed benefits. Her comment proved they are a party of bigots and racists! If they were to win the next GE I can see civil unrest ensuing!

Yes. I live in the constituency where the lady referred to is a councillor. (At the moment anyway, the results for that ward are not in). She has lived locally for many, many and is a very active councillor and has always fought for her constituents.

Can't believe people see what a waste of space Farage is as an MP and still vote for Reform.

Equally @lavenderlou,i can't believe people see what a flip-flopper Two Tier Kier No Principles Here is and still vote Labour 🤷

If they can survive losing £3.5 billion after exiting the EU, why the hell was the EU (us) paying them that much money in the first place ?

Makes you wonder who the turkeys actually are. The farmers ? Or everyone else that voted to be a member of the EU ?

Sorry, I also agreed with your point and was adding on to it. I didn’t come across well as was in a hurry.

Thanks @LoremIpsumCici
Another point perhaps worth making is that politicians lie all the time. They can put various intentions in their manifestos and then do something different if they do get voted into office. Trust in the political class has plummeted.

Sorry to be old-fashioned, but 'reform winning big' is illiterate.

Anyway, yes, a good night for Reform, but the interesting thing will be to see how they perform. I'm doubtful that they have the experience to do well.

I've lived in Scotland since 1991. When I first moved here the SNP were a 'fringe movement' and not taken seriously. I've had nearly 20 years under the SNP. They may not have had the experience but they've had long enough (repeatedly voted back in because of Nationalism and the appalling choice of who else to vote for) to trash education, trash the NHS, trash the economy etc.
Reform can do a massive amount of damage, just like Trump is, that will take decades to undo. It's very worrying.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 02/05/2025 12:20

@NorfolkandBad, the reason they won't do a grooming gang enquiry is because they did one already. It's called the Jay Report (2022).

Happy to help

The correct grammar is "if you were to go on FB" not "if you was to go on FB". I'm not sure why you keep talking about restructuring the sentence. Incidentally, to the poster you are replying to, it's also rude and bad manners to call people thick. More ironic, when you apply incorrect grammar whilst calling people thick. I'm not emotive at all; I don't believe I'm triggered by election results.

tortieCatLover · 02/05/2025 12:20

Labour should really make this a talking point rather than trying to placate Leavers who are fixated on Reform.

I've seen Rory Stewart postulate this is due to Labour fixation of few red wall voters but I agree with you - at least point out the bloody problems rather than concede the ground completely.

However some of the far left also dislike the EU - so perhaps it's trying to keep both far left and reform voters on side and avoid internal schisms while quietly trying to get on better with EU.

Tomatotater · 02/05/2025 12:22

I do wonder whether Reform seem, in some ways similar to the 'old' Labour Party of the 1960's, 70's and 80's. They were very old school traditionalists then, anti Europe, anti immigration ( based on European Union being a capitalist construct) anti immigration being something that takes away British jobs, they were against equal pay for women or any equality for women at all, because of the impact on the working man again, fighting for the retention of fossil fuels and against shutting down of coal mines etc. This 'new' middle class Labour Party is a pretty new construct. Reform are even talking about Leftist ideas like Nationalisation of industry. I know they are run by Millionaires for Millionaires, but the way they talk appeals to the type of people who would be in the traditionally Labour areas who would have voted in the past for the Labour of the 60's and 70's.

I slightly agree, but the carnage would awful for everyone except the wealthy. And people would still blame it all on immigration, I expect.

Or maybe it wouldn't be carnage. Maybe it would be all sun-lit uplands as was promised with Brexit.🙄
