AIBU to suggest
Now (whilst it's cool) is the time to open all your windows and let the fresh air in.

Give it an hour, and close them, and close your blinds or curtains in any sun facing windows.

This public service broadcast is over. Thank you.

28 inside isn’t nice for sleeping. Wouldn’t the better approach be to leave it a couple of hours to cool before opening up?

The evenings have cooled down loads here, nights are chilly @ 11 deg (SE England). OP said people were opening windows at 5pm, I was just guessing they were airing a house after it had been shut up for the day, that was all.

Ollybob · 01/05/2025 12:00

It's not that hot, all my windows have been open for several days now constantly, it's only when it gets very hot that I'll do the opening and closing tricks to keep it cool, even then as I'm on the top floor and heat rises I'm not convinced it works!

Dingalingalong · 01/05/2025 12:14

Nope! It's cold and dark and grim for 11 months of the year. I will let the heat and the sunshine and the joy rush through my windows and into my house, while I walk around half clothed and drink crisp drinks!

BleakAF · 01/05/2025 12:26

I live in the Peak District, was suffocating last night not being able to open windows! Bring me some fresh air!

Didn't need telling, they'd been open overnight.

You left your windows open on Walpurgisnacht?

😮

Ihateslugs · 01/05/2025 12:44

It’s not been too hot here in Manchester, very pleasant outside but the inside of my house is not too warm and it’s much cooler over night. I’m also lucky that I live in a bungalow with an overhanging roof so I only get direct sunlight in one room, my other rooms remain cool. So it has to be a lot hotter to be bothered to close windows and blinds.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 01/05/2025 12:45

Are you my cat? I’m having to keep him as an inside cat because he keeps launching himself off things outside and breaking his leg. He very much wants all my windows to be open, he doesn’t approve of the latch.

MrsCarson · 01/05/2025 13:03

😂I already opened the shaded side of the house and will keep the sunny side blinds closed up till the sun moves round then rotate. It's nice and cool in here.

All the flies and spiders come in if you do that. I bet the spider willies get on your washing left out too.

Shock I never leave the washing out overnight!

Ok I've googled it but still unaware of why open windows are an issue? Unless that's the reason I woke up at 4am with night sweats?! 😱

BumpyWinds · 01/05/2025 14:27

Ah yes, I look forward to this time of year... the time where I say this SO many times at home I almost lose the plot with DH who just doesn't get it, then manages to make the house just hotter and hotter each day!

I wish he worked in the office and not from home - our house would be so much cooler!

TheOtherBear · 01/05/2025 14:27

My 120 year-old house has 40cm-thick stone walls. No insulation. All windows open here, will be open all day, and the house will still be cool.

(Warm weather is when this house is at its best. Fucking Arctic in the winter)

RipleyJones · 01/05/2025 14:32

Can we leave them open for longer than an hour? 😂

Newbie8918 · 01/05/2025 14:33

I live in an old Victorian house with no cavity walls. It’s solid brick. Always cool, windows open or closed! I open for 10-15 per day for air circulation but one size definitely doesn’t fit all!

Potsofpetals · 01/05/2025 14:36

When you live in a cold 300 year old house that retains no heat this is wonderful weather. A few more days like this and I’ll be able to turn the £105 a week heating off.

We Australians live for these threads. 28 degrees would be a lovely cool day where I am!

Yes but! I used to work with an American chap who lived in Spain and didn’t understand how our houses are all insulated to keep the bladdy warm in! He also didn’t understand how radiators didn’t spew out cold air.

StasisMom · 01/05/2025 16:46

And hayfever sufferers, have you tried Fexofenadine? It’s made a huge difference to my and my son’s summers.

celticprincess · 01/05/2025 19:35

I usually pop the hatch on the loft. The hot air continues to rise above the bedrooms upstairs cooling down a little. My downstairs is always cool. Upstairs seems to always be hotter.

Exactly why I pop the loft open, so it can keep rising.

Your Australia houses aren’t insulated like ours. You have air con or ceiling fans or both. And you work in places that also have air con - my school classroom is like a fitness this week even with windows open as the classes seem to have a lot of windows making them almost like greenhouses. I was in Australia last August for a month. It was similar to English summertime temp wise but the various properties we stayed at were all easily cooled and warmed when needed

Reallyyyyyy · 01/05/2025 21:25

I live next to a field with dandelions galore. If i open my windows it comes in like snow! 🤣

Had a picnic outside today. Literally was eating dandelion seedlings
