Open Your Windows NOW

AIBU to suggest
Now (whilst it's cool) is the time to open all your windows and let the fresh air in.

Give it an hour, and close them, and close your blinds or curtains in any sun facing windows.

This public service broadcast is over. Thank you.

@LushLemonTart - I haven’t thank you. I grew up in Africa and I just follow what we did there.

Curtains closed to keep the heat out (we have tiled floors so quite cool inside house).

Doors and windows open in the evenings once the day has cooled down and pollen has dropped.

In the south East the hottest part of the day seems to about 5pm, yet all my neighbours seem to open their windows at that time?! Guys it’s 28c outside 23c inside, why invite the warm in?

I'm in the SE. This thread was inspired by my lovely neighbour (LN) and our conversation at 3 pm yesterday.
LN " hello mousey, isn't it hot?"
Me "yes, lovely isn't it."
LN "my house is like an oven"
Me "but you've got all your windows open"?
LN " yes, not making much difference, tho"
Me 🤔 " maybe close them and keep the hot out?"
LN " think that'd work?"
Me "give it a try" 😁

I’ve had my balcony door open all night and it’s tolerable for working now. Will keep it open as I’m high up and catch some breeze through the day.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 01/05/2025 09:26

I did. I open my windows first thing in the morning, however the first wasp of the year ventured in, so the windows are now firmly closed.

BashfulClam · 01/05/2025 09:28

Ach no I live in Scotland.

Wigtopia · 01/05/2025 09:28

Excellent public service announcement OP!! it really works!

We do this religiously when hot weather is forecast and makes such a difference!!! Due to DP’s work schedule he is up at around 05:00 and will open up the house and a lovely be comes in, and around 09:00/09:30ish I batten down the hatches!

Gumbo · 01/05/2025 09:29

But I have velux windows... And according to another thread if I open them dozens of burglars will start inside, a long with thousands of spiders...

TheFatCatsWhiskers1 · 01/05/2025 09:30

I can't because of the pollen. I also have a greenhouse of a flat. It's miserable.

CrocsNotDocs · 01/05/2025 09:31

We Australians live for these threads. 28 degrees would be a lovely cool day where I am!

Keep your loft hatch open if you have one. Roofs have ventilation and as the heat rises it will allow some of it to escape rather than build up.

You've not been in my loft. Although, to be fair, neither have we since February when it first gets too hot to breathe up there.

Firmly bolted shut all summer.

MrsPlantagenet · 01/05/2025 09:36

I am sitting inside in my coat. Doesn’t feel remotely warm yet (SE).

WittyJadeStork · 01/05/2025 09:37

My back door is widen open. Unfortunately my house has a stupid amount of windows and I’ve not made curtains/blinds for many of them yet. No prizes for guessing what I’m doing next week!

Phoebepeeby · 01/05/2025 09:39

Everything open since 6am. We always let the air in in the morning regardless of what the weather is doing. I love the sunshine.

DancingFerret · 01/05/2025 09:43

We're on the South Coast; our windows have been open all night. Our house faces south at the back; we have a walled courtyard, which is lovely on warm summer evenings but unbearably hot on really sunny days.

I'm just about to close the bedroom curtains and roll out the awnings downstairs.

Let's hope this hot spell isn't our summer.🤞

Gallowayan · 01/05/2025 09:44

Thanks to our independent Scottish climate the maximum temp forecast for today is 14C. No plans to open any windows. 18 would be nice but cannot cope with anything much higher. It must be hard for London folk at 28C.

snowmichael · 01/05/2025 09:49

> and let the fresh air in.
And wasps
So no, windows firmly closed

Topsyturvy78 · 01/05/2025 09:49

I usually have a small top window open I open it every night before bed even in winter. I don't really open the bigger windows now since a bird flew in my daughter's room.

ERthree · 01/05/2025 09:53

Your advice is right. Also if anyone is using a fan keep the bloody windows shut or the fan will never win the battle. It amazes me how many people think a fan will cool a room if you leave a window open to allow a stream of hot air in.

Likewhatever · 01/05/2025 09:58

Ahead of you OP. We have windows open first thing all round to clear the air, then gradually tilt the shutters and close windows as the sun appears. We also have parasols in the garden shielding the back of the house from the afternoon sun.

TheGhostOfPatButcher · 01/05/2025 09:07

Are you German? 😁

I am English and always have windows open unless I go on holiday.

Anewdawnanewname · 01/05/2025 10:09

I’ve been in this house for four years and after reading your post, I’ve gone and opened every window in the house for the first time ever. I’m not really a windows open person, I’m constantly cold, I hate being outdoors and I don’t want flies etc in the house. But thought I’d give it a go and let fresh air in today so I may convert, we’ll see. Downstairs are only open a tiny amount on the latch due to an indoor cat.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/05/2025 10:18

I'm Scottish but living in England. Our bedroom windows are cracked open all year round, I don't like a stuffy bedroom.

Last night we had the velux windows in the house open all night to allow the hot air to escape and the cool air to come in. Since hot air rises and cool air falls that works even on the hottest days. It was lovely and cool in the house when I got up.

GasPanic · 01/05/2025 10:31

I did and a load of flies and pollen came in so thanks for that.

Just to add, make sure you have the recommended 30cm of insulation in your roof as a massive source of heat in bedrooms is what comes from the loft through the ceilings. Lofts get very very hot on sunny days and with no roof insulation the rooms below get that heat all night long.

PS I tend not to open windows as I get plagued with spiders and flies. I trap in a glass and put outside but if you cannot then a hoover sucks them up but is not humane.

Soonenough · 01/05/2025 10:32

I wish I had these problems . By the coast and it is always breezy and chilly .
