To be really worried about Reform?

1000 replies

FiveHorse · 29/04/2025 13:09

Just that really. They’re predicted to gain the most from the upcoming elections, if this carries on could we see a reform government at the next general elections? Or is it press scaremongering as usual?

Last election I voted green
Which actually was a wasted vote .
Right now
There's none of them I want to vote for
There's no ..best of a bad bunch either
And they just do as they please once in power anyway

Maitri108 · 29/04/2025 15:08

My point was people seem to believe anything. I asked a poster earlier what Reform were going to do about the issues outlined in her local area and as usual there's silence.

What are Reform going to do about immigration?

Yes i agree Reform are the not the answer. But unfortunately most people want to believe that people concerned about immigration are stupid people who want to believe extreme stories (like you did with me). The truth is most people think immigration is too high but it’s hard to tackle it sensibly now.

HollieHock · 29/04/2025 15:19

Exactly what are you worried about OP?

HollieHock · 29/04/2025 15:20

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/04/2025 14:59

If you are voting for Farage etc you are voting against this country, against yourself, and this message should go out there very strongly.

The fact they are enemies of this country needs to be highlighted.

Please explain what you mean.

Fairyliz · 29/04/2025 15:23

AbigfanofDogs · 29/04/2025 15:07

Yes same for us both white and doing well, especially my DH who is an immigrant. We refuse to live in a racist country and would leave.

Genuine question where would you go to that is more tolerant than the UK, you speak the language and wages/costs are comparable?

I don't think people who are concerned about immigration are stupid. Immigration is currently unsustainable.

I am concerned that people don't know what they're voting for because when asked, they don't have an answer.

Summerseagull · 29/04/2025 15:25

The last couple of days ,I've seen so many posts about the 5 year rent payments to asylum seekers ,with landlords being payed to take them with rent and maintenance paid to the landlord for 5 years ,and utilities paid and council tax paid for 5 years for every asylum seeker
.I read that
And I thought
Starmer can't want another 5 years in power .
And doing this will push people to vote reform
And I actually wouldn't have a problem with that ,if everyone already living in the UK ,who needed it ,could have the same
My kids are disabled and will never live alone ,without support the eldest claims the health part of universal credit, that he's going to loose ..that money will be the difference between him living independently or not .
And that's fine while I'm alive ,lord knows what will happen to him when I'm dead .right now
I can't see any political party putting the needs of the disabled first ...or at least any kind of consideration
To think a labour party is cutting the money for people with disabilities..you couldn't make it up

Trumptonagain · 29/04/2025 15:27

GasPanic · 29/04/2025 15:06

I have met 3 candidates.

Labour don't bother doing the rounds or even spending money on leaflets because they have zero chance of getting in.

It may be that you live in a safe seat area. In these areas the opposition tend not to bother that much. Silly really because although they may have a low chance of winning, they have zero chance if they don't get out and about.

It was a very safe seat area or so it was thought at the last GE but a LibDem MP got voted in as "change was needed"...excitement was real among those that thought suddenly everything would change for the better..

Turns out they're only out if the camara is.

Local council has been a safe seat of Conservative party for years and seeing as the local MP is now a Lib and has done nothing I think it's made people realise a LD vote is wasted.
As you say labour don't bother.
So it's probably the Conservative party again......or Reform.

People locally are looking for real change and have seen what the 3 big parties have to talk about, they just fail when the actual walk fails to be, repeatedly seen.

A spelling and grammar checker, I hope.

I very much doubt people will vote for such an unknown quantity.

Trump was an unknown quantity in 2016 an now look where we are.

Ploun · 29/04/2025 15:29

I hope it’s a big bloody wake up call for the politicians who have completely mismanaged the country. People have been screaming out for years that we don't want undocumented people arriving for safety reasons. Most of us are on our knees after Covid, Brexit and COL. We cant support every poor person in the world via benefits unfortunately.

I hold UK politicians responsible for why the UK is so anti immigration now. I grew ip in the 90s and 00s as a half Indian person (i look full Indian) and never felt unaccepted and never had a single racist encounter. Can’t say the same now. People want Britain to still feel British. It’s okay to say that.

Many of my British Sikh uncles voted Reform in the last election. It’s over-simplistic to say Reform=racists. People want to be heard. The same thing happened in America with Trump. When will arrogant politicians learn??

TheWisePlumDuck · 29/04/2025 15:30

Doingtheboxerbeat · 29/04/2025 13:33

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the shit show that is Trumpism US will put people off voting for greedy , racist rich pricks and the want to blow shit up.
But as Brexit has shown us, very dissatisfied people tend to vote against their own interests , so I don't hold out much hope .

I am worried about reform but don't believe Trump will be putting anyone off voting for them, quite the opposite in fact.

He has been deporting people left right and centre, putting their portraits on the white house lawn along with their crimes (child rape etc.) and has massively reduced illegal immigration numbers in a very short time. Essentially he is doing what those who voted for him wanted, and I imagine as Farage is buddies with him that voters may be even more incentevised to vote for him if immigration is a concern.

If the Tories and Labour had actually listened and cracked down on illegal.immigration, and the too high levels of unskilled legal immigration/dependants then we could have had a moderate solution. I fear it is too late now, trust for the two main parties on this issue is gone.

I'm quite worried that it will now be inevitable that eventually a far right party will get in off the back of lax immigration and the outdated asylum treaty. It may not be the next election, but it is certainly over the hill. As an immigrant myself, I hoped it wouldn't come to that.

IdaGlossop · 29/04/2025 15:34

Lots of people will vote Reform because Reform tells them what they want to hear. That's how populism works. 'There are too many immigrants.' 'The major parties have failed.' 'England for the English.' 'Muslims want to take us over.' 'Deport illegals.' 'Too much workery.' 'The civil service is too big.' ' People who work from home are Shirley's.' 'Wednesday refom.' And so on.

Edited for typo

Berthafromtheattic · 29/04/2025 15:36

Labour are proving themselves to be just as racist with the way their rhetoric on immigration has turned out - let alone the way they treated Black and Brown MPs like Diane Abbot and Zarah Sultanah.

They moved too far centre right under Starmer and now progressives and liberals are politically homeless.

Labours approach to the economy is ignorant at best - let’s increase the cost and risk of employing people (NMW x NIC x Workers Rights Bill) just as automating via AI becomes more commonplace. And capital gains increases mean wealth is leaving or gains staying unrealised.

Not sure how much worse anything gets under Reform TBH.

Wingedharpy · 29/04/2025 15:37

Realistically and practically, how can anyone of any political persuasion stop undocumented migrants arriving?
How?

Hoppinggreen · 29/04/2025 15:37

Summerseagull · 29/04/2025 15:09

Where to
I've got two disabled adult children
So can't jump ship
Only those with money will be able to leave and start again elsewhere

True unfortunately but we can and will leave if he is PM

Reform are getting rid of the NHS ,as far as I have read .
So that's just going to life worse ,not better

‘An issue with grooming gangs’… I’d personally rephrase that as ‘ a major child abuse and rape scandal’…

Precisely! Do people really not understand the horrific things that happened to theses girls?

Summerseagull · 29/04/2025 15:14

What ...like thatcher ,selling off council houses and shutting down manufacturing industry..
How far do we go back to find a decent conservative party

Good question. I think perhaps she was the one who started it.

Depends on what they replace it with. An insurance based system like France or Germany could be more cost effective than what we have now.

I do believe everyone should have access to healthcare, but the way the NHS is funded and run simply isn’t sustainable as the population ages and chronic health issues become more commonplace.

I don’t think it’s hard per se to tackle illegal immigration. But it will take some v unpopular decisions - like pulling out of the ECHR.

Figgygal · 29/04/2025 15:46

Let the former Tory/UKIP/BNP candidates win council seats then they can be measured on something tangible. Shouting immigration is irrelevant when managing school budgets and bin collections.

Illegal migration does concern people, and that does have to be dealt with.

However, it’s getting amplified as an issue because of foreign influence, as those who want to harm our country know it’s going to rile people up.

So we have to address the fact of the foreign influence as well as the actual problems with illegal migration - which we were actually in a better position to fight from within the EU, ironically.

People have talked about grooming gangs - which is important - but again the discussion on that has been skewed - both in terms of framing it as only an “immigrant” problem which it’s not, and the suggestion nothing is being done.

Please reframe ‘grooming gangs’. They are actually rapists and child sex offenders aka paedophiles.
