Offended by friend’s comments about party food

We hosted my friend, her husband and three kids yesterday afternoon. Our sons are in the same football team and we said we’d put some food on at ours after and watch the Liverpool match who they both support. My friend agreed to party style food being the best option as everyone could pick at it as and when.

Amongst other things, there was - Indian selection, tempura prawns, sausage rolls, mini pizza’s, mini sausages, chips, breaded chicken. So a good mix all from Iceland where we’ve had positive comments on the food before.

I could tell my friends’ youngest looked unimpressed when they tried one of the items, and pulled a face to my friend. She made no
attempt to get them to try another item and basically said ‘I know’. I noticed five minutes later she had barely ate anything herself either.

15/20 minutes later, the youngest moaned again and this time my friend said ‘don’t worry, we will stop at McDonald’s on the way back as I’m hungry too.’

I text her after they left to say sorry if they didn’t enjoy the food. She replied to say they didn’t realise it would be that sort of food and that they’d have got something else before coming round if they realised!!

AIBU to find this really snobby and ungrateful? The fact she then took the kids to get a McDonald’s makes no sense!!

I have turned up to countless parties/BBQs where food like this is being served and just got on with it best I could. With some friends I might turn up with dips and crudites as I know they won't of thought about them but would call it a contribution along with a bottle of something.
But I would never in a million years makes comments about food "like that", it's rude and not cool at all.
Also I think your friend is bonkers for making a fuss, going to mcdonald's and then suggesting you bought M&S party food. We had M&S picky bits for my sons birthday last night as M&S is easier to get to in my work lunch break and it's not exactly fat free or healthy.

Well you’ll be pleased to know I saw my friend on the school run! And she actually said sorry that her youngest didn’t eat anything (didn’t mention her mcd’s comment). She said she thinks this was because it was frozen food rather than ‘cooked from fresh’ which she thought it would be (she doesn’t mean me cooking from scratch, just the same type of food but not frozen).

I asked whether she had any recommendations for future and plenty of you guessed it….apparently M&S is where she’d go! And that they do 4 for 3 which ‘she’d usually get a few lots of’. We had that stuff at Christmas and it wasn’t cheap and to be honest not really worth the money IMO, plus we’d have needed probably 10+ items to have catered for everyone on Sunday!

Frantically typed this sat in my car before work, I look forward to reading back on lunch 😂

What an utter snob!

I'm a bit cynical about all the big supermarkets. I would put money on the same factories making ready meals and party food for several different supermarkets, as well as big brands. The difference will mainly be in the packaging.

Several of them use same suppliers and staff.. ingredients/recipes may differ

Next time, buy Iceland again but get rid of all of the packages and I bet she'd be none the wiser.

It's all about clever advertising.

MakeItToTheMoon · 29/04/2025 09:16

She sounds like a snob. What child can differentiate the between M&S and Iceland?! Then to top it all off she thinks McDonald’s is any better… strange behaviour

Sharrison88 · 29/04/2025 09:17

Out of interest how old is this youngest child? Mine wouldn’t have a clue at what’s fresh and what’s frozen 😂

Wiltingasparagusfern · 28/04/2025 21:31

Good lord. Do they ever get off the toilet?

We are supposed to eat fruit and veg! They are very healthy and go to the toilet a completely normal amount. I would imagine though that if you don't eat fruit and veg you are constipated and only expect to poo every few days?

wfhwfh · 29/04/2025 09:19

Some people on the thread still aren’t getting that it isn’t about the food - it’s about how terribly the friend behaved.

We all have our own food preferences. I often struggle with a buffet but I make all the polite noises. It’s easy to hide you are not eating much.

The friend’s later text just blew me away with how crass it was.

If anyone else would have behaved like the friend then you are not special or healthy or exclusive - you’re just very very rude. I feel sorry for the child actually as if your parents don’t teach you manners, you are likely to end up having social difficulties as people don’t enjoy being around other people who treat them like rubbish.

Id just do the slow fade on the friend - definitely I’d never have her round my house again.

FrenchandSaunders · 29/04/2025 09:20

Incredibly rude. I’d be so cross if my kids behaved like that. You try and do a nice thing for someone and they respond like that. Horrible. No manners.

Trovindia · 29/04/2025 09:21

ConstanceM · 28/04/2025 22:23

It wasn't the last supper FFS. Get a grip, her spread was absolutely fine. Iceland is good stuff. Same manufacturers, different labels.

I wasn't commenting on the manufacturer, just the type of food, it's all oven cooked protein in greasy carbs (which is fine as a treat), no fruit or veg so it's not balanced, but I also said it's not a big deal and I would expect my kids to be polite and I would just give them other food at home to make it more balanced.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/04/2025 09:24

Been thinking about this and this is what I did for mini blondes 8th birthday last month. For think 10 kids and around 7 adults

French bread pate ham phili
pizza cheese and pepperoni and df one
sausages
chicken nuggets
crisps Pringles onion rings
party rings oreo jammy dodgers
cucumber carrots peppers Grapes
dips
garlic bread

all enjoyed and 99% of it went

@Trovindia

ahh, it’s gonna be a rude awakening for your kids when they go to uni and learn how expensive it is to buy so much fruit and veg, not to mention the effort it takes to buy it all in fresh all the time! I bet they’ll see a sandwich as lunch then!

DenholmElliot11 · 28/04/2025 20:57

Yes this. It's hardly special, certainly not what I'd use to host with as I'd want to shine as a hostess.

😂😂
My god, the snobs on here.

Dita73 · 29/04/2025 09:29

@Cherrytree86 fruit and veg isn’t expensive. Processed food is. The reason people buy it is because it’s quick

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/04/2025 09:29

Trovindia · 28/04/2025 21:30

Crazy isn't it? Mine would expect what they get as standard in my house: apple, cucumber, pepper, blueberries, strawberries, grapes, satsumas. That's what I always add to their lunches every day, they actually don't consider it lunch if it's just a sandwich lol. They ask for the fruit and veg.

No worries about food miles, then. Out of season strawberries and blueberries have to be flown in from hot countries thousands of miles away.

Wrong. Processed food is cheaper and more convenient, why do you think poorer people eat it and have more obesity problems.
Fruit and veg, fresh meat etc is expensive

Dita73 · 29/04/2025 09:31

@TweetingHurricane disagree

Fruit and veg can be extremely expensive, depending on what you buy. Value carrots and other root vegetables, probably British grown, not too bad. Soft fruits and mangetout flown in from Kenya in December, far more expensive and rightly so, given the environmental impact, but I wonder how much of the premium cost gets back to the people doing the growing and picking.

PinkyFlamingo · 29/04/2025 09:33

Dita73 · 29/04/2025 08:39

It’s all frozen cheap processed meat. No vegetables or anything fresh at all

So? It was a few party snacks when watching football, why on earth would there be vegetables! 😂

You absolute legend you. Where's those Victoria Crosses for bravery when you need them?

"Got on with it the best I could" 😂

How is this relevant on this thread where there isn't even a hint that anyone at the football watching gathering didn't eat meat?

SchrodingersTwat2 · 29/04/2025 09:35

We would be disappointed with highly processed cheap food but we definitely wouldn't say anything!

But OP likely knows that her friend does eat meat.

Just the M&S kind apparently.
