Offended by friend’s comments about party food

We hosted my friend, her husband and three kids yesterday afternoon. Our sons are in the same football team and we said we’d put some food on at ours after and watch the Liverpool match who they both support. My friend agreed to party style food being the best option as everyone could pick at it as and when.

Amongst other things, there was - Indian selection, tempura prawns, sausage rolls, mini pizza’s, mini sausages, chips, breaded chicken. So a good mix all from Iceland where we’ve had positive comments on the food before.

I could tell my friends’ youngest looked unimpressed when they tried one of the items, and pulled a face to my friend. She made no
attempt to get them to try another item and basically said ‘I know’. I noticed five minutes later she had barely ate anything herself either.

15/20 minutes later, the youngest moaned again and this time my friend said ‘don’t worry, we will stop at McDonald’s on the way back as I’m hungry too.’

I text her after they left to say sorry if they didn’t enjoy the food. She replied to say they didn’t realise it would be that sort of food and that they’d have got something else before coming round if they realised!!

AIBU to find this really snobby and ungrateful? The fact she then took the kids to get a McDonald’s makes no sense!!

YANBU. They were very ill-mannered.

It doesn't matter if the food offered was their favorite or not. Someone was nice enough to invite them over and provide some nice snacks for them. Therefore, they should smile, eat it and say thank you, and teach their children the same.

I think the only exception would be if the food was spoiled or they were allergic to it or it would otherwise make them ill. Talking about getting McDonald's instead is unbelievably rude. I would not invite them again.

Sorry they basically slapped your face in return for your gracious hospitality.

Maybethisallthereis · 28/04/2025 21:02

Super rude.
Kids usually love that shit! Mine would!
Personally I wouldn’t and neither would my DH, he is quite healthy and hates beige food.
To me Iceland frozen stuff is utter junk but I would have eaten it not to be rude!!

She’s clearly not a nice friend!

Shadowsunray · 28/04/2025 21:03

If she goes to McDonalds I would completely ignore her opinion on food quality.

Rainbow1901 · 28/04/2025 21:03

I wouldn't have an issue with your food but then I was brought up to accept and appreciate hospitality - however it is offered. So if you gave me a cup of coffee in a mug I'm not going toss it back at you saying I only ever use bone china tea cups!! Your guests were just rude and fussy.

Motherland2624 · 28/04/2025 21:03

i would of ordered dominoes so you beat me sounds lovely x

BogRollBOGOF · 28/04/2025 21:04

It wasn't a gormet occasion. Not even a standing around to make sandwiches occasion. It was about easy, convenient food while you're watching some sport together and Iceland party food ticks the brief off perfectly. There's enough variation to keep most happy.

I'm not quite sure what they wanted if they're sulking off to McDonalds as that means they're not orthorexic lentil party food types, so presumably it wasn't bland enough for them.

With the mum's manners being like that, the child doesn't stand a chance at learning them.

Auroraloves · 28/04/2025 21:04

That sounds nice, I and my children would enjoy that buffet

Your ‘friend’ is a rude nasty b1tch

Ddakji · 28/04/2025 21:05

That does sound like a whole load of stodge.

No sandwiches, or crudités and dips, no crisps, no fruit.

Your friend was rude, no doubt, but I’d rethink your party food.

YourAquaLion · 28/04/2025 21:05

If anyone is providing you with free food it’s pretty bloomin rude to complain about it. Make them bring their own in future, if there is one!

netflixfan · 28/04/2025 21:05

What an awful ignorant woman. Whatever food you’re served as a guest you eat a bit even if you don’t like it, and don’t make any comment apart from oh it’s lovely thanks so much for your kindness or some such.
if you invite them again say you’re serving nibbles, and offer crisps, olives and cheesy biscuits.

Fruit! While watching the footy
Fucking hell 😂 😂 😂

notsureyetcertain · 28/04/2025 21:05

TYour friend was rude I wouldn’t go to any trouble for her again

MamaLenny · 28/04/2025 21:06

Was the item the child tried and mums "i know" comment about something from the indian selection by any chance? Some people are very funny about "foreign" food/spicy food.

I agree it makes no sense to turn your nose up at oven chips and go to McDonald's so that's all I can think of.

GlowyJelly · 28/04/2025 21:06

To be honest if I was bringing kids around for party food, I’d have expected some sandwiches, maybe grapes or carrot sticks, dips and crisps.. I wouldn’t think they’d be any tempura prawns and Indian snacks. However - she was rude to say she was going to McDonald’s in front of you. I wouldn’t invite her again.

HeyCooper · 28/04/2025 21:06

Iceland buffet and McDonald’s seem on par with each other, I’d expect everyone just to eat the buffet without fuss.

Fucking hell 😂 😂 😂

For the kids. I don’t know, I don’t watch sport but I didn’t realise fruit wasn’t allowed!

KindLemur · 28/04/2025 21:08

Bloody hell it doesn’t matter if you’d prefer a Waitrose charcuterie, authentic pizzas tossed by an elderly Neapolitan man, wild boar hog roast or whatever, it was for some little kids watching a footie Matt h and it was very kind of OP to offer and spend her money!

some of you weren’t raised by a certain type of northern mum who would tell you to eat it and say thanks even if it was ‘shit wi’ sugar on’ !! 😂🫢

KindLemur · 28/04/2025 21:09

Ddakji · 28/04/2025 21:08

You don’t ’watch sport’ ??

not even the boat race with some organic strawberries for Jacinta and Araminta?!!

AhBiscuits · 28/04/2025 21:11

An Iceland beige buffet is pretty grim. But my family would have just got on with it and said thanks after.

Firefightress1 · 28/04/2025 21:11

Crumbs it's a hard crowd with some of you posters..... my mum often put on wee picky tea like this as a special meal and we loved it! I'd give everything to come home to that again.
If you served me cucumber sticks I'd think you were mental!
You've been lovely and a great host.

This

Id asked her out of sheer curiosity what she considers party food?

Plates sandwiches?

Lookingtomakechanges · 28/04/2025 21:11

I don't like Iceland party food but if you'd been kind enough to invite me round to watch TV over snacks, I would fill up my pate, eat it and sincerely thank you. Your friend was needlessly rude, and encouraged her child to be the same.

PonyPatter44 · 28/04/2025 21:12

Who the fuck doesn't like mini sausages and tempura prawns? These people were impressively rude and definitely don't deserve to be fed by you in future!

WaffleParty · 28/04/2025 21:12

They were incredibly rude. Iceland party food is minging but they could have pretended.

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 28/04/2025 21:12

Its just bad manners pure and simple. There was nothing wrong with the food you provided for the occasion and who is she to turn her nose up at Iceland food when she eats macdonalds!!!
