Offended by friend’s comments about party food

We hosted my friend, her husband and three kids yesterday afternoon. Our sons are in the same football team and we said we’d put some food on at ours after and watch the Liverpool match who they both support. My friend agreed to party style food being the best option as everyone could pick at it as and when.

Amongst other things, there was - Indian selection, tempura prawns, sausage rolls, mini pizza’s, mini sausages, chips, breaded chicken. So a good mix all from Iceland where we’ve had positive comments on the food before.

I could tell my friends’ youngest looked unimpressed when they tried one of the items, and pulled a face to my friend. She made no
attempt to get them to try another item and basically said ‘I know’. I noticed five minutes later she had barely ate anything herself either.

15/20 minutes later, the youngest moaned again and this time my friend said ‘don’t worry, we will stop at McDonald’s on the way back as I’m hungry too.’

I text her after they left to say sorry if they didn’t enjoy the food. She replied to say they didn’t realise it would be that sort of food and that they’d have got something else before coming round if they realised!!

AIBU to find this really snobby and ungrateful? The fact she then took the kids to get a McDonald’s makes no sense!!

I think given the fact that she's happy to eat frozen crap, as long as it's 'high end' frozen crap makes her snobby and rude. Especially given she agreed to the menu in advance.

Basically, if it was from M&S she would have scoffed it.

This!!!
The guests are rude and the mother is setting her child up for failure, by not teaching her child- basic manners. But then the mother is also lacking too, in that department?!

They were rude......but I wouldn't want Iceland party food either.

Their party food is actually really nice , especially if cooked correctly (ive manged to ruin it a few times with over cooking ) and needs to be served straight away.

Imisschampagne · 29/04/2025 07:38

I mean, I wouldn’t serve frozen food from Iceland to guests. That’s pretty low effort and I imagine the taste is subpar. But she’s rude nonetheless. I wouldn’t give out an invitation to them any time soon.

Fruit! While watching the footy
Fucking hell 😂 😂 😂

See i really don't get this. Don't you ever put out a punnet of strawberries or blueberries? Most people love fruit, its sweet, its refreshing

🤣🤣🤣

WaltzingWaters · 29/04/2025 07:40

She sounds like a rude “trying to be snobby turning her nose up at Iceland foods but then going to mc D’s instead” (that’s worse!) bitch. What you served was absolutely fine for an easy, no fuss watching the football feast. Ungrateful cow.
I’d never host them again.

Each to their own.....but I cook from scratch and wouldn't eat or serve frozen processed food.

Along my mates people would actually cook/prepare fresh food, it would not be the norm to host & offer up trays of oven baked beige.

It would be:

  • charcuterie/cheese/fresh bread, lots of salad, fruit etc
  • freshly cooked barbecued meat, side dishes
  • freshly cooked good quality pizzas for children
  • pulled pork rolls and salad
-Veg sticks & hummus definitely

There would always be fresh veg/salad/fruit and sides made from scratch etc

You have to be taking the piss 😆

Even for a few nibbles while people watch football? Crikey.

Well you imagine wrong then. Nothing wrong with the party foods from Iceland

PinkyFlamingo · 29/04/2025 07:45

OP you said party food and that's what you served. I'm killing myself at some of the suggestions on here ...cucumber sticks 😂😂

HellDorado · 29/04/2025 07:48

So I can see why they would be a bit dismayed that there was no fresher option, and I don't think it's rude not to eat if you don't like the food.

Dismayed? Christ on a bloody bike 😆

Of course cooking from scratch is better, and there's lots of things I would make from scratch at a party but there's nothing wrong with a few packs of frozen party food on the odd occasion if you're either really pushed for time and there's lots of ppl to feed. You say each to their own but that's your passive aggressive way of being judgemental.

For nibbles when watching the footie? It wouldn't be my first thought when I heard 'party food', no. Especially something as informal as watching football with friends.

minnienono · 29/04/2025 07:55

If I said party food it would be bread, cheeses, meats, dips and crudities, a plate of those beige freezer foods maybe(I like the prawns and can’t beat sausage rolls) crisps and salad garnish at least. Just the beige freezer food is too fatty for me and I don’t like the chicken in batter type things as the chicken tastes horrible.

more typically for guests I make a veggie chilli and serve with baked potatoes and other toppings

Notonthestairs · 29/04/2025 07:55

Once again, the choice of food served is irrelevant.

The woman was unnecessarily rude.

The drama on mumsnet is hilarious

I’m pmsl at the idea that the child who only eats macdonalds would have eaten a freshly prepared buffet from scratch

Utterly bizarre behaviour tbh, they said party food and the OP served party food.

AzurePanda · 29/04/2025 07:57

Whatever was being served they were unbelievably rude. I would be horrified if my children behaved like this as guests.

butterdish93 · 29/04/2025 08:04

I’d eat it because it is what it is. But I hate that kind of food even if it was from Waitrose rather than Iceland, it’s all just so blergh. Kids usually eat it though and she’s lost the plot if she thinks Mac Donald’s is better.
she’s also incredibly rude!

Sauvin · 29/04/2025 08:08

This is the great irony of snobs. They think they’re superior to someone but are in fact showing their inferiority by their bad manners.

BeanQuisine · 29/04/2025 08:09

"And I am clearly in the minority here as most people think this is a delicious party buffet."

Not really. I'd imagine most people here would expect these snacks to be pleasant and tasty enough, and an easy, simple treat that doesn't require anyone to miss the match, which is the point of the social occasion.

Those claiming that Iceland frozen snack food "isn't nice" are really saying: "These companies try to meet the expectations of ordinary popular taste, and I'm here to announce that I'm better than that, even though it's of no relevance or consequence."

Teateaandmoretea · 29/04/2025 08:09

Tbh I wouldn’t have put that much effort in personally. I’d have just shoved some pizzas in the oven and chips in the air fryer. All that defrosting and cooking for different lengths of time sounds a bit of a faff 😂

Not passive aggressive. Just agreeing to differ.

Evaka · 29/04/2025 08:15

Lol at all the people saying they wouldn't like it either. Spectacular missing of the point. Your friend is a rude cow and you really shouldn't have apologised to her OP.
