To think today's young people won't know what their ''first record ' was

Listening to Spotify and the first record I ever bought came on (On my Radio by Selector if you're interested !)

but DC who all music comes from Spotify, won't have that 'first record' moment.

It probably doesn't matter to him but I think it's a shame.

Mine was Natalie Imbruglia - Torn.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 25/04/2025 20:55

Maybe they'll have a first playlist memory.

cramptramp · 25/04/2025 20:56

I know what was no. 1 when I was born as well as my first single and first LP.

LlynTegid · 25/04/2025 20:56

It won't just be the first record they bought. Their first Blue Peter presenters, which stop-motion programme (Bagpuss or Magic Roundabout), for example.

LoremIpsumCici · 25/04/2025 20:57

I am pretty old and have no “first record” moment. We had cassette tapes.

JackieDaytonaLuckyBrews · 25/04/2025 20:57

Mine was Kylie Minouges first album -I was seven and I remember vividly going to buy it for my birthday. Played that record to death!

But you still bought cassette singles. That would be classed as your first record.

I always bought entire albums, my first was the U2 Joshua Tree in 1987, on cassette for my Sony Walkman 🫣

Babysitting money went pretty far then,

HaddyAbrams · 25/04/2025 21:04

No idea what mine was! Would have been a cassette tape, but no idea what.

frozendaisy · 25/04/2025 21:05

He will have first YouTube star hit or equivalent

just culture consumed in a different way

CopperWhite · 25/04/2025 21:06

They might remember their first game, or the first app they downloaded instead. They’ll have other things that are equally as nostalgic to them one day.

Eggsinthewhoopsiebasketalready · 25/04/2025 21:06

My first vinyl was Remember You're A Womble in the 70's!!

LadeOde · 25/04/2025 21:07

No, but they will have different first, like their 1st phone.

Dahlietta · 25/04/2025 21:07

I am also of the era of cassette singles, but can't remember which was my first one!

LoremIpsumCici · 25/04/2025 21:07

I was telling my adult DC the other day about how when music was released there was NO VIDEO to go with it. That videos were a later thing once MTV came about. They were amazed. Because producers have gone backwards in time and created videos for old songs, they thought there had always been a video with each song.

My first vinyl was Remember You're A Womble in the 70's!!

I was dressed as a Womble for a primary school Christmas play in early years. I think I was added into the Nativity as a joke because I remember gales of laughter when the Womble song came on and I and my fellow wombles wombled up to Mary and baby Jesus.

ObliviousCoalmine · 25/04/2025 21:11

My 15 year old has a ‘first record’.

AngeloMysterioso · 25/04/2025 21:13

The first album I owned was Everything Changes by Take That on CD. It was a Christmas present when I was 8 and I’ve just discovered it was shortlisted for the mercury music prize! It was obviously much less up it’s own arse back then 😂

Dinosweetpea · 25/04/2025 21:15

In my 40's. Mine was Beats International- Dub be Good to Me. Still got the record in a memory box! Happy days.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 25/04/2025 21:20

Vinyl’s pretty popular though. Though they feel bloody expensive these days!

I told DS to choose the first one he bought himself carefully as he might always remember it! In the end he had three first records at the same time - one he chose from a deceased grandparent’s old record collection, one we bought him, and one he bought himself.

JustAnInchident · 25/04/2025 21:23

Honestly I’m always surprised that anyone at all can remember what their first record/tape/cd was. I literally don’t have a clue 😅

Doyouthinktheyknow · 25/04/2025 21:29

Goombay Dance Band, Seven Tears was my first single, on vinyl. I am singing it now😂

It’s a song you rarely hear unsurprisingly these days but I love it as much as my favourite socks, even now😍

Second is Karma Chameleon by Culture Club. Loved culture club so much back in the day♥️

TallAndSkinnyWithAnUnusuallyLargePelvis · 25/04/2025 21:29

I vividly remember the first single I bought. It was 'Vienna' by Ultravox. Our music teacher allowed us to bring in a favourite single to play at the end of term, and mine was one of the chosen. I was 12.

Before that I'd been relying on using my Dad's HiFi system to tape record the Top 40 (trying to stop the tape before the DJ spoke was quite a skill).

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 25/04/2025 21:31

Vinyl is back in a big way... DD spends a small fortune on it. So she definitely knows what her first ever record was.

Reallyyyyyy · 25/04/2025 21:31

Mine was a tape. Bwitched 🤣
