To think today's young people won't know what their ''first record ' was

Listening to Spotify and the first record I ever bought came on (On my Radio by Selector if you're interested !)

but DC who all music comes from Spotify, won't have that 'first record' moment.

It probably doesn't matter to him but I think it's a shame.

With a stream though you can have lots, with a record you just bought the one and I'm from the days when you stood in a booth listening to it before you bought it so it was a little event

DoAWheelie · 26/04/2025 22:58

I never really had a "first" as I bought 4 full albums in one go.

My 15 year old has a ‘first record’.

Mine too. I don’t think my 7YO ever will though. I think he’ll remember the first songs he added to his playlist instead. His will be something or other by Imagine Dragons. He went through a phase of asking Alexa to play their songs on repeat.

Mine was Gina G - just a little bit. I was so excited that day

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/04/2025 23:37

Mine was "Bye Bye Baby" by the Bay City Rollers when I was 9. I didn't actually go to the shops to buy it because our next door neighbour owned an independent record shop in the city, so I just asked him to get it for me and I used my birthday money.

bluemoons3 · 27/04/2025 00:06

You might be surprised! My 14dd has a record player and around 25 vinyls now, she will always remember her first. She saves up for new ones & limited edition releases, we do record store days & charity shop hunting for them too! Lots of her friends same age have record players and vinyl too

“Shaky” by Shakin Stevens!

CloodUpper · 27/04/2025 10:03

Mine was David Soul - ‘Silver Lady’

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 27/04/2025 10:05

No, but they'll have their own generation's set of firsts that they'll look back on fondly

KimberleyClark · 27/04/2025 10:09

Mine was Ghetto Child by the Detroit Spinners.

@Doyouthinktheyknow Seven Tears is a cracking song. Regularly pops up on my Spotify playlist.

First single I bought was Spaceman by Babylon Zoo on cassette. Gutted now as there were so many superior Britpop tunes happening at the same time that I could have chosen, but no 🤦.

CloodUpper · 27/04/2025 10:19

I LOVE 7 Tears !

Blarn · 27/04/2025 10:20

Maybe for some that will be a good thing to save them having to lie or say they don't remember, rather than having to admit at 9 years old they bought Cotton Eye Joe. My taste rapidly improved.

I am pretty old and have no “first record” moment. We had cassette tapes.

I'm nearly 67 and cassette tapes weren't really a thing when I bought my first single - it was Back Home by the 1970 England World Cup squad!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 27/04/2025 11:12

@Blarn There is nothing wrong with Cotton Eyed Joe and that is a hill I am happy to die on 😁.
