To think today's young people won't know what their ''first record ' was

Listening to Spotify and the first record I ever bought came on (On my Radio by Selector if you're interested !)

but DC who all music comes from Spotify, won't have that 'first record' moment.

It probably doesn't matter to him but I think it's a shame.

I am pretty old and have no “first record” moment. We had cassette tapes.

In a charity shop on Tuesday with my 17yo daughter and there were a box of tapes. I was reminiscing about my diana Ross LP 😂 i had on tape. Vinyls and CDs beside the tapes. Happy memories. Next shop had an old stack system in it and I was trying to explain to her where the tapes went and how a pencil or pen sometimes came in handy and she was looking at me like I needed locked up!

I was telling my adult DC the other day about how when music was released there was NO VIDEO to go with it. That videos were a later thing once MTV came about. They were amazed. Because producers have gone backwards in time and created videos for old songs, they thought there had always been a video with each song.

Music videos pre-dated MTV. The first music video that stuck in my mind was Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975 but that wasn't the first ever.

Bbq1 · 25/04/2025 21:32

Bucks Fizz after they won Eurovision with Making Your Mind Up. Me and my friend were always making up dance routines to The Fizz!

Serencwtch · 25/04/2025 21:36

No clue. Born 1980's Would have been cassette tapes. Don't remember buying/being given singles. We recorded off the radio or bought albums eg NOW.

Thanks, I did not know that. Probably because my parents went on a no screens
kick and tossed out the TV when I was 10 to 14, so I discovered music videos while babysitting at other houses.

TheFormidableMrsC · 25/04/2025 21:40

To be fair pre MTV (1981) videos were pretty non existent.

QueefQueen80s · 25/04/2025 21:53

They’ll have their own firsts. Just like my parents had different firsts to me that I was never sad about missing as it wasn’t my existence

BunnyBerries · 25/04/2025 21:56

Loadsssss of kids have a Yoto Player now.

So their first radio DJ is Jake, and possibly the Queen Greatest Hits album Yoto card their first official record Smile

Chiseltip · 25/04/2025 21:56

They will have first TicTok or first Call Of Duty.

I mean, none of us have "first TV show".

Tech moves on.

We had "first car", kids born today won't have that either.

Honestly I’m always surprised that anyone at all can remember what their first record/tape/cd was. I literally don’t have a clue 😅

Same. I also don’t have a childhood toy or
blanket that I’ve got as an adult.

cardibach · 25/04/2025 21:59

I’m 60. I have no idea what my first record was. I think my first album was one of the ABBA ones (not sure) but no idea about a single.

Why wouldn’t they have a first car?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 26/04/2025 22:08

I think it will be of no concern or relevance to them.

katkintreats · 26/04/2025 22:11

The first CD I bought was Boyzone, and ‘my’ Blue Peter presenters were Katy Hill, Simon Thomas and Konnie Huq.

That ages me pretty perfectly doesn’t it!

JackGrealishsCalves · 26/04/2025 22:44

Adam and the Ants -King's of the Wild Frontier, aged 11.
Son is 19 and I doubt he would remember his first download

TeapotCollection · 26/04/2025 22:50

Best Years of our Lives by Modern Romance

Sesma · 26/04/2025 22:52

Monkees, Daydream Believer. I was about 10. First TV programme was Watch with Mother, I think that was the only one on when I was young.

LemonFinger · 26/04/2025 22:53

Ah, but they will have that "first song I streamed or listened to for myself" memory. I do get its not the same as buying a record or cassette and the fun we had using listening posts in Virgin!

Swiftie1878 · 26/04/2025 22:54

My daughter will. She’s really into music and vinyl!

Worsthousebeststreet · 26/04/2025 22:56

I'm too young for records but I still remember the first song I illegally downloaded on limewire and burnt onto a CD 😂
