To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?

There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

I went local Facebook group famous for threatening to spray deep heat at a dog that snatched my son's sandwich out his hand. He was in his pushchair as well. Most dogs are fine but there are some nutty dog owners that give everyone else a bad name.

None of the posts from the anti dog people are coming across as kind or decent. And they’re definitely not funny (in the way they’re intending them to be at least).

I love the people in my life, they’re great. I don’t have room for anyone else in my circle. I have no interest in strangers or making new friends. That’s what I mean when I say I prefer dogs. I’d always make room for dogs.

Hear hear. I was sat outside a cafe the other day and a couple were with their massive 9 month old yellow lab with a harness on saying "friendly" God, wasn't he just.. so cute. Get this, I then noticed they also had a puppy yellow labrador sitting in a dog pram kind of thing with netting on to shield him from the sun. They were both being fed toast at the same time. Lovely couple as well. I wanted to take a photo of the dogs but didn't think it was the right thing. When you see priceless sights like that. Only dog lovers would get it.

Inclined to agree to a point. I have dogs and do enjoy the beach with them during the winter, but places that serve food, places that are designed to be quiet or for vulnerable users (such as libraries which are wonderful for the very young and the elderly) and a whole lot of other places that are wildly inappropriate for any animal I absolutely don't take them to. Are they a part of my family? Yes. But they are not a part of everyone else's and I will not force other people to put up with them.

exactly this. Plus it's not exactly fun for the dog either

I had a woman's Labrador puppy jump up on my bare legs once. Painful!

It’s usually when I’m out running and the dogs “just want to play”. Needless to say, I don’t want to play, I want to make the most of my precious run time. I don’t want to stop and wait for owner to get their dog under control.

TaupeRaven · 17/05/2025 10:14

With you on the dogs, but your "perimenopausal wild-eyed harridan" crap just makes you sound like someone as unbearable as the dog owners you dislike so much

Here's one of my cult members. Little satanist.

DarkForces · 17/05/2025 10:23

@Dangermoo its weird because most cults have only one leader and yet we get at least one each. At least we can recognise each other by the rolls of small icon bags hanging from our pockets.

IWishIHadntDoneThat · 25/04/2025 13:03

that's a very unkind comment. These dogs are likely old, injured or unable to walk for some reason.

When my dog had both his cruciate ligaments done (metal plates) he was on very restricted exercise till they healed. He had to be supported to pee/poo as couldn't put weight on his back legs at all.

He was only 2 at the time so found this most frustrating and boring.

I carried him to local park and put him down to pee, then picked him up again and took him to another spot to pee and so on.

I did this cos I love him and at least this way got to sniff the air and mark his territory. i suppose a bit like taking a disabled person out in a wheelchair (done that too). They still like to get out and about.

Quite frankly a dog 'pram' of some sort would have made it easier as despite being a small dog he is quite solid and heavy.

I doubt any dog owner would push a healthy dog in a pram for no reason. We know people are judging us.

My dog is getting old now and has heart problems. I've already thought about what I will do when he is no longer able to go for walks. I'll probably just drive him in the car to different parks and let him doddle about. However I might buy some sort of dog 'pram' so I can walk myself for exercise and let him enjoy some fresh air, dog sniffs, new territories.

Yes I will buy the least looking 'pram' one I can find cos I have no desire to have anyone think I am taking my dog out in a pram.

Very small minded/cruel though what you said.

Dogs are very loving, loyal and kind and ask very little from their humans. It's a shame that most of us are not worthy of them.

I agree with everything you say. My dog is elderly now and suffers with arthritis so can’t walk far or for very long but we have a younger dog who still needs exercise so we have a pram that we can pop her in and out of to help keep her comfortable because she still loves to be outside and it would be cruel to keep her at home 24/7. She has given us 12 years of love and companionship and anything I can do to repay her for that, I will.

Just as long as the icon bags aren’t hanging from trees - I don’t know who they think they’re converting, but it isn’t working.

Cherrytree86 · 17/05/2025 11:47

All these people saying their pets are nicer than most humans 🤣 like how do you know?? They can’t talk! If they could talk you might find they’re actually real bastards who don’t really like you at all- it’s all just cupboard love

DarkForces · 17/05/2025 11:49

@Cherrytree86 my dog may not speak English but she's perfectly able to communicate. Her love language is acts of worship. We have a mutual understanding that I'll comply if she keeps my feet warm.

@DarkForces

so is that why some people prefer dogs to people?? Because they need to feel worshipped?

DarkForces · 17/05/2025 11:58

@Cherrytree86 I've no idea. It's not that deep. Dogs adore us and we adore them in return. They clearly fulfil a need, whether that's company, a desire for love or just enjoying fulfilling a dependant creature's needs I've no idea. Seeing my dog full of joy makes me happy and they are usually full of joy unlike people. Small things make them happy. A routine daily walk is the best thing ever. A bowl of food is exciting every single time. Snoozing in a pool of sunshine is absolute contentment. Humans could learn a lot from them

User135644 · 17/05/2025 12:02

The worst is in residential areas. Constant barking drives me up the wall.

Onleemoi · 17/05/2025 12:03

Nah it’s because people are mostly tedious pricks. Doing their best to be witty and cutting but failing miserably.

DancingDucks · 17/05/2025 12:04

I totally agree. I have two dogs and I love them to bits. They're very sociable, loving animals and they get loads of exercise. I have no desire to take them to the library, for a coffee or anywhere similar. They are never left alone for more than 3 hours.

This new breed of dog owner who feels that their 'fur baby' has a right to go anywhere they wish to take them, regardless of other people, seem to have a bunch of nervous dogs with separation anxiety. There are many, many ways to socialise a dog. Taking it into Starbucks is certainly not one I would choose. I was in a lovely cafe about three weeks ago when a woman came in with a lovely little dog. The poor thing was skittish and happy, then proceeded to shit on floor. Not exactly what you want to see when you're trying to eat your lunch.

they don’t have all the pressures and expectations and worries that humans have though so they can be joyful and carefree!

Well yes of course but living in the moment, enjoying the simple things, appreciating the ordinary are things we can all do.

Agreed. But they don't need to be in the library or similar.

DarkForces · 17/05/2025 12:15

@DancingDucks what libraries allow non service dogs? Certainly none that I've seen.

I actually prefer dogs too. I still think there are some places that are not suitable for a dog. Not everyone likes dogs and some are actively scared of them. It's just about being thoughtful.

yeah and lots of us try to do all that. It can just be hard what with work, cost of living crisis, other strains and pressures etc.

Our local library does. 'Well behaved' dogs are permitted (though often they're not well behaved but that's down to their owner isn't it). They can also go into the cafe at the back too. I fully accept that it won't be the same everywhere.
